Renyrd was once a simple, ordinary fox living in the woods. But a mysterious patron imbued Renyrd with intelligence and magical power, and sent him to serve as the familiar of the witch Genta Cynama, now Venture Captain of the Bushlege Lodge in Taldor. Renryd journeyed with Genta on many adventures. But after their foray into the inner depths of Skyreach, a mysterious magical effect transformed Renyrd! He became a human, of the same approximate age and ethnicity as Genta, although he had technically only lived for a much shorter time.
Becoming a human was a traumatic change for Renyrd at first. Not only did he find himself in a new body, but the connection between witch and familiar was broken. Renyrd had to think for himself. True, the contact with Genta's mind meant he instinctively knew how to read and speak Common (and tell convincing fibs to boot). But it was hard for him to adapt to human activities like table manners, using tools, and wearing clothing.
With her new job as venture captain to attend to, Genta didn't have much time to help Renyrd with the transition. She brought him to Absalom to try and find a home for him. Her first impulse was to let him spend some time in a temple. But Renyrd was kicked out of the temple of Calistria within a day, for excessive biting.
As Genta's fox familiar, he had been able to tolerate civilization like a human. But as an independent human, Renyrd only wanted to return to the woods and live like a fox.
So, Genta brought him to the forests of Taldor, where a circle of druids stood vigil. She hoped that they might be able to bridge the divide between animal and human.
Renyrd embraced his new human side, with the druids' help. And yet, as the elders taught him, he could never abandon his true nature. He behaves, speaks, and fights like a man, but the cunning of the fox is always there behind his keen eyes.
The snake, Ajagar, is a tree python that Renyrd encountered early in his training as a druid. His first impulse was to attack the snake on sight, but the elders restrained him. They decided, as his first and hardest lesson, that he must tame the serpent. But Ajagar proved to be surprisingly docile; it was Renyrd's own nature he truly had to tame. Renyrd keeps Ajagar around as a reminder of this lesson as much as to aid him in combat.
Now, Renyrd returns to the Pathfinder Society, without Genta's guidance. And with a keen new interest in finding dangerous magical treasures. He's especially interested in anything to do with the treasures of Hell, or artifact gemstones. Renyrd still reports to Venture Captain Genta and runs her bookstore in her absence, but he is ready to make his own way in the Society!
