Karen insists that people call her 'Raven'. She claims that her power comes from witchcraft, and she has been caught dancing naked in the woods to attest to it, but everyone in town knows it's really from her sorcerous father, just like the rest of her siblings.

As one of the youngest, Raven is known as a troublemaker, often getting into fights with her nearest sibling, brother Merritt. Their last battle was epic, and if Raven hadn't broken his arm, Merritt would probably be stuck doing "this stupid Everflame ceremony thing" with her.

Her father, Moltus Vargidan, is one of a long line of sorcerous rakes, so she and her siblings exhibit a wide variety of sorcerous bloodlines. Though Raven is the only one who exhibits Fey influence, most townsfolk don't know enough about sorcery for her to feel unique from her siblings. In an attempt to distinguish herself, she developed her witch persona, tries to diminish her appearance, and tries to be rude and offensive, in both words and actions.

She began denying her sorcerous heritage in her early teens, as the oldest of her siblings began to leave Kassen to stake out their own adventures. Growing up, they had taught the youngest what they had discovered about sorcery, so Raven has a strong foundation to begin with. Now, she rarely uses magic in public, not wanting to draw attention to herself as "just another Vargidan kid". Instead, she's cultivated a reputation for being pretty rough. She will use magic more freely when she feels she's alone. She spends a lot of time in the woods, probably due to her fey blood, but she likes to claim she's "cavorting with the spirits".

Raven would be strikingly beautiful, if everyone else in her household wasn't also exquisitely attractive. As it is, she tends to try to diminish her beauty, often dressing in plain, dowdy clothes and coloring her hair black, though her blond roots always show within a week. Her clothes and the visible parts of her body often have dirt from the extensive time she spends out in the woods.

Giamoreaux: Nanny G to the kids, the older woman serves as a cook and nanny to the household.
Baker: the Vargidan butler. A short, quiet, humorless older man. Unknown to the village and all of the children but Magda, Baker is a highly experienced rogue who adventured with Moltus.
