Background:

Lorlenn (which translates as Dream Journey) was born in Crying Leaf, but doesn't remember much of that life beyond the use of his native tongue. When he was only 38 years of age (human equivalent of 7-8), his parents attempted a secret, foolhardy pilgrimage to Celwynvian. One evening, when almost to their destination, his mother failed to return from hunting food and his father went off in search of her; he also failed to return.

Two days later, Lorlenn stumbled through the ruined city, and into a heated battle between drow and a group of adventurers. The adventurers were victorious and the group's human mage, Sorval, took responsibility of Lorlenn, who would not speak.

Unable to identify where to find Lorlenn's extended family, and with Crying Leaf being over 100 miles away, Sorval took Lorlenn back to Magnimar. Lorlenn was given over to the care of Desna's priesthood at the Cynosure Tower, but Sorval visited often. One cleric at the tower, a human woman named Talalia, took particular interest in Lorlenn's muteness -- and Sorval. Three years later Talalia and Sorval wed, Sorval retired from the adventuring lifestyle, and they officially adopted Lorlenn.

Sorval spent much of his free time in the following years, studying Magnimar's mysterious monuments, and often took Lorlenn with him on field trips. Likewise, Talalia did not give up her responsibilities at Desna's church in the Keystone district, and Lorlenn went with her on most days. For decades as Lorlenn grew into a young adult, he cooperated with his adoptive parents' activities, but never spoke. Even the birth of his sister, Requina, who was born a little over eight years later (when Lorlenn was 49; human eq. of 10 years) did not stir Lorlenn to speak.

Lorlenn and Requina were fast friends through Requina's childhood. Lorlenn loved his little sister, even as he watched her grown into a defiant teenager, rebelling against their parents. She left home and started associating with Sczarni criminal families, eventually leaving Magnimar. She became a famed Varisian Fortune-Teller (sorcerer with the dreamspun bloodline), disappearing from her family's life for 16 years before returning to Magnimar for Talalia's funeral after dreaming of her mother's passing.

Talalia died in her sleep, peacefully, of natural causes. She was 64 years old. Lorlenn found her while Sorval was on a field trip to explore recently discovered passages under a monument. At the funeral Requina commented somberly to Lorlenn, "For over half a human lifetime she raised, taught, and loved you, but was never blessed with hearing your thoughts expressed aloud. She goes to Desna with sadness encumbering her soul."

That night, Lorlenn looks up to the sky and says aloud, "I'm sorry." It's been 44 years since the last time he spoke.

Lorlenn honors his mother's memory by entering the service of Desna as a scribe, and a little over a year later he meets (and kisses) his first love, Wandilee, a rare paladin of Desna. Lorlenn is 83 years old (human eq. 16-17) when she is only 18.

They marry after another two years pass, and a year after that, she gives birth to a baby girl, whom they name Fahnelle.

Three years later Lorlenn's adopted father, Sorval, falls ill. Lorlenn's sister, Requina, again returns to Magnimar to help care for the old man, bringing her 13 year old twins (a boy and a girl). Sorval never recovers and after two years, finally passes away at the age of 76.

Requina asks if she and her children can continue living with Lorlenn and Wendilee, as she wants her children to have a more stable environment as they grow into adults. Lorlenn and Wendilee agree.

The couple have another child four years later, a boy named Daylor, and another daughter, Sorlena, three years after that. Requina's children move out to begin lives of their own shortly following Daylor's birth, but Requina continues living with Lorlenn and Wendilee. Life settles down after that and becomes very routine for the next 13 years.

When Fahnelle turns 25 years old, Lorlenn is 111, but looks only 22. During Fahnelle's coming of age celebration, the thirteen year old Sorlena innocently asks, "Why doesn't daddy ever grow old?" This upsets Wendilee greatly, as she's now 46 and feeling an emotional rift grow between herself and her husband.

For his part, Lorlenn still loves his wife deeply, and it saddens him to see her aging. Watching his adopted parents grow old and die was natural; seeing Requina's advancing age was a minor shock both times that she returned to Magnimar. But Wendilee's slow progression alternately makes him sad and angry, especially knowing that even his children will likely die of old age before he is even considered middle age by elven lifespans.

Life goes on, and Requina eventually dies at the age of 78. Her children have had children and grandchildren of their own, with whom Lorlenn keeps in casual contact. Wendilee hangs on to life until she is 81, leaving behind three adult children who now all look as old, and older than their father.

After Wendilee's death, Lorlenn begins training as a Cleric of Desna, finishing the training with Pathfinder Society classes in Absalom. Subconsciously he knows that he's risking his life by becoming an adventurer like his adopted father. But somewhere in his heart, he's okay with that.
