Khadath's Background

Spoiler:
Khadath the Humbled

Khadath’s father was a man of influence and wealth in the City of Calimport. as was his younger brother. Khadath’s mother was quite beautiful and was sought after by both brothers, though Khadath’s uncle had in fact met Khadath’s mother first. Its was Khadath’s father, being the older of the two, that won her hand and heart. Being the older of the two, Khadath’s father never considered his younger brother's feelings or even that he would ever dare to challenge him.

For many years Khadath’s parents tried in vain to have a child. They soon learned with great regret the reason why they could not, Khadath’s mother was infertile! So great was their desire to have a family that they turned and prayed to the Great Old Ones of Kadath. The Great Ones are the "weak gods of earth" that reign in the Dreamlands which Khadath’s father came across in some obscure text of an old book he had purchased.

Kadath was the dwelling place of the Great Ones, a gigantic castle found atop an immense cosmic mountain in the Cold Waste. So it was Shub-Niggurath, a sort of female fertility deity that took a moments interest in human affairs. One dark cloudy night while Khadath’s parents were bonding, a large cloudy mass manifested from the earth, it boiled and changed shape, protruding limbs and other forms at will. Small creatures spat forth, then were re-consumed into the miasmatic form as it moved. Shub-Niggurath is most often referred to as “The Black Goat of the Woods With a Thousand Young" and her milk is reputed to have mystical properties. Thus the goddess infused Khadath’s father with her milk. So it was a blessing onto Khadath’s parents when they learned they had achieved there greatest desire. So the wife gave birth to a son, whom they named Ibn Khadath Shabb Izzu Azuth (meaning Son of Khadath, Young Power of Azuth). Azuth being the deity that Khadath’s parents originally and normally worshipped.

Khadath is my own variant naming for Kadath, which Khadath was named after, Izzu means Power, Might or Strength

It will never be known if Khadath’s parents angered the goddess Shub-Niggurath for choosing to add Azuth name instead of hers but the day would come when their lives would be changed forever.

As is common for most Calimshan, Khadath’s parents relied upon mercantilism for their livelihood. Since the birth of Khadath, his farther business practices began to suffer, but not in the normal sense of income, but by the politics, backstabbing, deceptions and blackmailing that is usually associated with how business is done in Calimport. This was a direct reflection on the increasing amount of time he spent with his family.

Khadath was raised with the same outlook on life as were all Calimshanian’s, the desire for, title, status, gaining wealth, etc... Being their only child they lavished Khadath with the finest clothes, books and so forth. Both parents viewed Khadath as a gift as they knew having just the one was an impossibility and they never did conceive another child. As Khadath parents learned more about the Great Old Ones they began to understand why they only had the one child, and they soon learned that Khadath was gifted! Khadath began to demonstrate a high intellect and reasoning capabilities, he learned to read at an early age and the tall tell signs of a powerful wizard formed in his parents mind.

Khadath had a wonderful early childhood, that all ended abruptly when his father met with an unfortunate accident. Khadath’s uncle had never forgiven his older brother, from his perspective, Khadath’s father had taken from him what was rightful his, Khadath’s beautiful mother. Khadath’s uncle worked behind the scenes to frame his brother. He also managed to arrange his death at some heavy financial expense to himself, but he knew if he succeeded, the return would be three fold and he would also claim much of his older brothers possessions, including his wife!

Fires are common in Calimport, particularly during a dry period. Calimport was built primarily out of mud bricks since the arrival of the genies of Calim, which makes it quite flammable due to the straw used in fashioning the bricks. Many buildings and the ever present tents and carts of its inhabitants are made of wood (not to mention slaves quarters, stables, and mounds of flammable refuse in hundreds of alleyways). The city periodically encounters dry periods, and one spark will engulf whole drudachs and sabbans in flames.

The fire raged violently and many eye witnesses had seen Khadath’s father inside and consumed by the flames. The family was ruined. Debts were due and the wolves came a calling, with Khadath’s uncle leading the pack!

Both Khadath and his mother became no more than property, all their possessions were claimed and they were sold as slaves, Khadath’s uncle saw to this and thus was able to claim Khadath mother for himself. Khadath mother pleaded with her dead husbands brother for her sons well being, in return, she would deny him nothing and serve him tirelessly. Khadath’s uncle had anticipated this from his brothers wife from the start and had already secretly made arrangements for Khadath to be purchased by a wealthy Calimshan noble. What was not commonly known is that the noble fancied young men, though of course Khadath’s uncle was quite aware of this. (recall how Vlad’s younger brother Radu looked like at that point in his life in the movie Vlad the Impaler)

The noble had already knew all there was to know of Khadath when he first claimed him. Khadath’s uncle had explained of the boy’s unusually high intellect and if given proper training could become a powerful wizard in the nobles service. The noble cared not for this idea in fear that Khadath would grow to much in power and turn against him. For he knew all to well that power corrupts. So the noble chose to have Khadath branded by having the tattoo of a dragon place along his left arm, marking him as a potential wizard. The tattoo was also a means for the nobles other servant and guards to identify Khadath, as well as a reminder that they should report to him if they ever suspected or knew of Khadath learning of the arcane arts. Khadath’s name was also changed to Khadath Abdul X, (meaning Khadath slave or servant of X, X being the nobles name, sorry not particularity good at picking names)

“Abdul” used by itself means "slave of”, “servant of”

Alone and frighten the years passed and Khadath had accepted his lot in life. In truth, once Khadath had accepted the nobles will he was never treated poorly. He even rose to serve the noble as a personal assistant and bodyguard. He was given weapons, a dagger and a light mace, along with a masterfully crafted chain shirt, “as my personal assistant and bodyguard you must also look the part.” the noble had stated. Khadath wasn’t really a bodyguard in the traditional sense, as the noble had “real bodyguards”. Khadath neither excelled at combat, nor had any real physical strength to defend the noble properly.

The noble enjoyed traveling to be a spectator at major events, such as the Champion's Games presented each year on the Field of Triumph held in Waterdeep.

The brigands laid in wait as the caravan, along with Khadath and the noble drew nearer. They were a days ride out from Daggerford where they planned to lay over for the night when the assault took place. Normally this wouldn't be a problem for the nobles guards, but the brigands had been well informed, and as well, some of the nobles own men had fallen to bribery, all of which had been staged by Khadath’s mother whom had planned for her sons freedom once she learned the truth of his circumstance. Still the more loyal of the nobles guards were quite skilled and a bloody battle ensued.

Khadath found himself standing alone in defense of the noble with several bandits circling them as the remainder of the brigands either shouted their companions on or looted the bodies of the dead and the caravan. Unknown to the brigands, a regiment of the 3rd Company led by Lord Llewellyn Longhand had been delayed on their return to Daggerford and arrived on the scene to see Khadath valiantly trying to defend the noble, but lacking any real combat skills, it took only one blow that grazed his skulled, which sent him to the ground unconscious. It took only a moment longer for them to dispense with the noble by plunging a dagger through his heart. The bandits scattered even as the patrol charged in, none lived save Khadath.

Khadath slept for three days, he awoke before the break of dawn to find himself laying in a cot reserved to help the needy at the Church of Lathander. He was still dressed and armored, his light mace laid at his feet and he had a slightly blood stained cloth which had been changed periodical wrapped around his head. Khadath struggled to his feet, stumbled slightly, still feeling a bit lightheaded from his injury. Grabbing his weapon he looped it onto his belt and made his way out and about the halls of the church. An acolyte busy with her morning routine spoted him but readily continued with her duties, stopping only to say ”you should remain resting until one of the priest come to see you”, but Khadath cared not and waved her off. Khadath moved from hall to hall, up one flight of stairs, then entered through a large archway further down another hallway which led into a very large room with many pews and alcoves. He had unknowingly found his way to the church’s great hall.

He slowly walked down the center main aisle and stopped once he was twenty or so paces from the podium which rested atop of a stage. He turned in place as he looked upon the stained glass artwork which adorned nearly every window pane, the largest of which boar the holy symbol of Lathander was behind the stage, which held an easterly position to allow the sun to shine through when the dawn came, which was still a few minutes yet to arrive.

With the realization of where he now stood, anger started to arise in him, and he began to shout blasphemous cries out to all of the gods in general, as he was unfamiliar with the Morninglord and his teachings. His cries echoed throughout the halls, which drew the attention of Liam Sunmist, who was already headed to the great hall to make his usual morning preparations. Sunmist arrived to find a young man bearing his soul for all to hear the anguish which transpired in his life. Khadath had not noticed Sunmist as he cast out several more colorful phrases, all the while Sunmist remain silent, simply remaining still as the youth expended himself, and the dawn drew nearer, scantly several moments away.

Khadath fell silent as he had nearly exhausted himself and he staggered in placed barely able to remain on his feet, the dawn was but a moment away. His hand went to the loop at his side which held his light mace. Grasping it firmly in hand with his remaining strength, Khadath made a half turn as he cried out “TO HELL WITH YOU!” and he flung the mace at the stained glass artwork before him. Even as the weapon left his hand the dawn broke through as it did every morning. The first ray of light colligated with Khadath mace and it shined as the sun itself as it remained suspended in mid air above him. The rays of lights that the mace emitted beat down on Khadath, driving him to the ground where he remained bathed in the glorious light which is the Morninglord. Khadaths mind filled with light which blinded him, the light filled every recess of his mind driving all the darkness within away which had plagued him. The light intensified and touched his soul, the mace ceased to exist as it silently exploded into shimmering specks of light which fell over Khadath and vanish before they touch the floor. Khadath collapsed onto the floor unconscious, tears had evidently run down the young mans cheeks during the experience, Sunmist noted, as he knelt over him. The experience had humbled Khadath, and when awoke the following morning he felt as if he had been reborn!

Khadath of course studied and became a Cleric of Lathander. As further proof of his rebirth he had an Eagle tattoo placed along his right arm to signify his strength and freedom, he also shaved his head bald to symbolize the shedding of his past life and adopted the name, Khadath the Humbled. Though he pretty much just goes by Khadath. He has now been a member of the community for the past seven years.
