DESCRIPTION
Her jet black hair extending straight along her back, Karla smiles shyly as she dances among the trees. Maple leaves of fiery shades of green dance on the mesh of her white linen tunic, spiralling upward to her crimson scarf. With a pale hand, she traces in the air the outline of a symbol sparking with green light, echoing the hypnotic jade irises of her eyes. Her thin red lips bounce on her shy white teeth as she utters syllables that resonate with eldritch power. Through her flawless movement, she is one with the earth, her form an extension of its terrible power.

ASPIRATIONS and DESIRES
Karla is first driven by a desire to belong. She is young and in need of a community to replace the family she lost. Phaendar provided that community and now feels like family. She wants to protect it and see it prosper.

Yet, underneath also burns a deep lust for revenge. Secretly, Karla hopes that destiny will one day lead her back to those who slaughtered her family.

Finally, Karla longs for her lost siblings, those that may have survived the raid. She did not see them all die and entertains the hope that some might still be alive. Doubt and hope fills her heart whenever she looks at the mountains to the west.

Her violin is her only link to her family and serves as a painful reminder. She always cries softly while playing, remembering them and wondering what her dad meant.

BACKGROUND
Ten years ago, the Teg family of performing artists, minstrels, troubadours and acrobats, left Korvosa, fame, and fortune, to get on the road and bring their art to the remotest regions of Avistan. Unbeknownst to most of the travelers, the family was running for its life. The Sczarni family, their former sponsor and business partners, were hunting for Karla’s father, the Chelaxian Mertus Teg.

Karla was twelve at the time and showed a gift for magic, but also with animals. Her father had put her in charge of the animals the Tegs used in their performance.

The road took them east, through the Bloodsworn Vale, for Gabziella Gaczi, Karla’s mother, so wanted to see the Fangwood Forest, and had some relatives in Phaendar.

The crossing of the Mindspin Mountains proved deadly. First the weather, then a party of Hobgoblin mercenaries, turned the Teg’s voyage into a nightmare. For weeks, the Tegs fought a war of attrition. The Hobgoblins proved surprisingly well organized and cunning. One by one, family members were kidnapped or killed in night raids. Karla heard the scream of her younger sister Tania as she got snatched. Then it was the turn of her older brother Escheus, who tried to rescue Karla back. Finally, her mother caught a poisoned arrow. She was dying slowly, while the Hobgoblins kept at bay. Her father was by now but a shred of a man.

Yet, they were making progress, and the caravan, now down to three wagons, hoped to reach Skelt. That’s when Karla saw her first giant…

The absolute might of it shook her as it scrambled down the rocks, impervious to arrows, laughing at the gathered spears of the last defenders, and roaring its war name: Rezark! Nothing could stop it.

Her father put Karla on a horse and gave her a canvas bag, saying: ”Flee now. There’s nothing left to do. Take this bag. It’s the sum of my sins, and the reason I brought death to our family. Run and don’t stop until Skelt!”

Karla remembers hearing mighty magic being unleashed behind her as she barrelled down the slope and into the plains of Nirmathas. For two days she rode, until she was picked up by a patrol and brought back to Skelt.

In the bag was nothing but a violin…

Karla moved to Phaendar, living with her aunt Katia, and made a living working in the town’s stables. Once in a while, she would also play the violin at gatherings, though her warm tears made people uneasy.

Campaign Notes
You’ve never caught Azaersi asleep because she no longer sleeps. There is a passage in her wardrobe leading down... somewhere, and she spends her evenings there with that accursed witch-worm. I could not bypass the guardian below; it is tireless and brutal, but it fears the red shard. If you can steal Azaersi’s red shard, I believe you can cow the brute! I shall attempt to do so and report additional details to you.
