Background:
The first thing you notice about Joren Thexes is the fact the left half of his face seems ... off. Slightly waxy, a bit too pale, lacking an eyebrow, and white lines like cracks are spread throughout the skin. A present from his old boss, is all he would say in a growl. Joren was burned by an old 'customer', not for doing his job well or anything of the like. But for being too fair in looks, after the Master Delgin was rebuffed on a date for not being handsome enough and the woman used him as part of her insult.
The Kingdom of Razeria in the East, his birth place, and a pile of shit encrusted with gems in the attempt to hide that fact. There is no love for the place in Joren's mind, just ire at his treatment. A half-breed born of an elven tryst, then thrown to the streets when it appeared he had no arcane talent. While scrounging, a friendly hand named Marcus Norveair offered him a place to rest and plenty to eat ... a mistake to accept. Joren spent all of his youth before the war as a Serf, trying to pay off a debt that would never go away or decrease. His services as a calligrapher was well wanted, between taking part of writing scrolls to just exemplary decorated notes to another, that his employer Marcus didn't want to give him up for any reason due to the profits.
When the draft hit, Marcus Noveair was one of those chosen. Shaken, he approached Joren and told him that his debt was cancelled, if he would take his place in the draft. After a moment of hesistation, the foul man then said that if he was going to go to his death, he would sell all his debts to the guild and let them be used as test subjects! With little choice, Joren accepted the deal and joined the Great War.

The Sovereign States of Oswell, well the stories of the place at least, are a dream of a better life to Joren. The melting pot of peoples and ideas seems like the best hope for a place for Joren, seeming to be the near opposite of everything he hated about the Kingdom of Razeria. If he ever survives this war, THAT is where he wants to go and live as there must be somewhere that would accept him.
The Kingdom of Aloran, to Joren, must be a most dreadful place. It lacks the arcane and tools needed to truly survive. Sure they have had tales of great works and culture, but what is there to do? Since the great war though, Joren's respect for the Kingdom of Aloran and their tactics and war. They may not have the extravagent tools that Joren is used to seeing, but their tactics with what they have makes the Kingom of Razeria look like they simply toss an ocean at the target in the attempt to wash it away, versus the Kingdom of Aloran's precision of the tip of the sword instead.
The Empire of Belthouse was a cesspit in Joren's mind. Filthy and disgusting people that must have the ire of the gods frowning on them, keeping them alive to further their torment. They wallow in the filth that at least Razeria attempts to cover up, how ever badly. Once the Great War happened, and seeing the effectiveness of the multitude of seige weapons on the battle field, Joren is ever so thankful the wretched Empire is working towards the same goal. Oh, he'll never visit the place willingly but still the seige weapons of Belthouse are a soldiers best friend.

Initially, Joren entered the war with nothing. Not even a dagger in hand, much less armor on his back. All he had was his knowledge from writing scrolls for wizards who didn't want to spend the time writing them, and styles of unarmed combat burned in his mind from copying books for a monastery. In the heat of battle, one learns fast. Joren wasn't good at first, but he grew quickly in skill as he gained experience while trying to make what knowledge he knew work. Over time, he scavenged spellbooks from other dead wizards, or nicked them during the night to study from a few others before returning them. This lead to finally expanding his talents in the arcane, which were not as non-existant as his one-time parents had thought. He grabbed hints of how to properly fight from other monks in the ranks, blending it with his personal attempts at spellcraft.

Then came the front-lines. The town of Bastree was being evacuated, and Joren's batallion was sent to delay the advancing swarm of demons. They were all given steaks and wine the previous night, an expected last meal. At first, the fight was merely bad. Sure, it was only the lesser demons such as Imps and shadow demons ripping apart soldiers but the batallion did the same in return. Then a Nalfeshnee teleported onto the field, and many started to loose their minds from its unholy nimbus. Those that weren't felled in their daze, couldn't help but stare at the fight between Joren and the Nalfeshnee. The huge demon and the much smaller human were going at it with zeal. Arcane bolts of fire, ice, and lighting slid off the two, as they traded blows and spells.
It was a near thing, but Joren had downed the demon and started pounding on its spine in the attempt to finish off the giant monstrosity. The ranks of demons broken at seeing such a sight, retreated for a time to regroup. Joren stood on the back of the unholy thing, blood and ichor dripping from his fists and feet. No armor, no weapons. Nothing but the arcane and martial power heralded by a single half-elf. The town was lost, but the people were evacuated in time and his batallion successfully retreated with them to fight another day. It was the first success that draw attention to Joren and his skills.
Joren's goal after surviving this war is to setup a town in Oswell, aimed towards mixing the monk styles and magic more completely. The fact he will have control to insure that bias against half-elves will be punished, and that debts will be carefully watched to insure the debtee isn't being taken advantage of is just a bonus.
