Misfortune (Su): The witch can cause a creature within 30 feet to suffer grave misfortune for 1 round. Anytime the creature makes an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check, it must roll twice and take the worse result. A Will save negates this hex. At 8th level and 16th level, the duration of this hex is extended by 1 round. This hex affects all rolls the target must make while it lasts. Whether or not the save is successful, a creature cannot be the target of this hex again for 1 day.

Background:
Hazel was born in the capital of Talingarde before the House of Darius took over. Her mother, Sarana, was a cleric of Asmodeus, and her household was well ordered, and her punishments swift. She wasn't a bad mother however, she loved her child with all of her heart and raised her very well for six years. Hazel grew up without a father, her mom said he was “A bad choice, with a good reward” referring to Hazel.

As she was growing, she spent much time in the Temple of Asmodeus where her mother preached. Although she never felt a divine connection to Asmodeus as her mother claimed, she did begin to have dreams involving devils. They called out to her, asking her to join them. They whispered to her of vile secrets about different people she knew, and how she could begin her training early. When she told her mom, Sarana was overjoyed that her daughter was able to hear the minions of Asmodeus. But it scared Hazel that she could, and she secretly decided not to listen to them.

A year afterwards, she found that she was beginning to develop strange powers that even her mother couldn't explain. Her powers were nothing noteworthy, sometimes food would go bad suddenly or a candle would light up without any cause. To her mom they were slight happenings, but to Hazel they were amazing. Hazel began trying to train herself, but met with no success. This year she was also sent a warning by the devils that blood would be spilled in a year, and to tell her mom to ready the clergy. She had vowed not to listen to their evil whispers, and despite the warning, she paid it no heed.

Then when hazel was six, the House of Darius made their bid for power. They swept over Talingarde with a righteous fury that even the Asmodeans couldn't match. They destroyed the temple her mother preached at and then came to their house. They slew her mother in front of her, and then turned to her. She isn't sure why they didn't kill her, perhaps she was young enough they thought she could be re-purposed to serve Mitra, but they were wrong. They stuck her in an orphanage with kids she didn't know, none of whom even knew who Asmodeus was. She stayed there while the war raged on.

Despite not knowing how to do it, with grief and anger in her heart, believing if she had just listened to the devils in the first place her mom would be alive, she called out to Asmodeus in a dark ritual never heard of before or again that nearly killed her. That night she dreamed not of the devils that had so long visited her, but a lone devil, shrouded in darkness. He beckoned to her and she began to walk towards him. “I see you blame yourself for your mom's death little one.” Hazel shrunk back seeing he knew she was warned about the coming war. “Do not fear me my child, many people ignored my warning, believing us too powerful to be defeated. But now we must find a way to strike back... Can you be patient little one?” Hazel nodded her head. “Good. Take this, little one, as a symbol of my blessing. Talk to it in your thoughts, and through it, I will teach you to prepare for when we rise again. But as I said, you must be patient.” The shrouded figure opened his hand, and inside was a snake. When she saw it, she squeaked in surprise. “Ewwwwww, a snake? They're slimy!” Hazel said.
“Trust me little one, he is not slimy, nor will he harm you. But keep him our secret, do not let anyone else know, for they would get jealous of you.” The figure said with seriousness in his tone. Hazel held out her hand and the snake slithered onto her arm and rested while wrapped around it. Hazel then stared up at the imposing figure. “Remember little one,” he began, “commune with the snake, and I will teach you how to avenge your family.”

Many years went by, Hazel learning from her secret pet the mysteries of why she had been developing strange uncontrolled powers. Even more than that, she was taught the many facets of Asmodean worship and the religion. When she turned 11, she asked the snake why she had to learn all of this, she heard the voice of the shrouded figure say, “Because without it, you will never know what you fight for, and how to best serve.”
“But I want to learn something useful!” she said, with fire in her heart. She had been learning about texts and rites and history for five years now, surely it could end. “Do you remember what I asked you when we first met young one? I asked if you could be patient and you said yes. I need you to keep that patience going, it isn't our time yet,” the devil replied. Hazel knew he was right, what could she do at just 11? Later that year, one of the bullies in the orphanage followed her into her room to beat her up, but before he could throw any punches, the snake darted from hiding under her bed and bit the boy. The boy began to choke and gasp, his lungs sealing off from the venom in the snake. After a few seconds he collapsed, unbreathing, and the caretaker came running in at the sound. “What happened in here?” The caretaker exclaimed. Hazel looked up at the old women with the biggest, roundest, most tear covered eyes she could manage and said, “He... He... He was going to beat me up! I didn't know what to do so I just hurt him! But now he isn't breathing. Am I going to be killed for hurting him?” Hazel began to sob. The caretaker looked down at her with pity and said, “Hush child, everything will be okay. It was an accident, get some sleep now.” Hazel turned away and grinned, it had worked! This was when she realized all of the learning had taught her how to manipulate events to her advantage, and how to be patient until her plans were realized.

Many years went by without incident, the other kids afraid to talk to her. Hazel didn't care, she had her pet and Asmodeus. When she turned 18, she was allowed to leave the orphanage. She took the opportunity to go out on her own and learn new things. She spent much of her time learning how to dress in ways that helped her natural charm and good-looks convince others to give her her way. She mostly got by through convincing others to help her, and avoiding coercion in the new self-righteous Talingarde.

When she turned 24, the figure revealed himself to be Asmodeus and offered her a deal. “I will speed up your training, and make sure you find failing to be a rare occurrence if you will pledge yourself to me fully.” She didn't even have to consider it, he had taught her almost everything she knew, and in that first meeting had been more of a father to her than she had ever had. She immediately said “Agreed.” She began to learn magic from Asmodeus through the snake, subtle tricks to aid her lies and manipulations. As she grew more and more, though slowly, she became more and more successful. She continued to hide her worship of Asmodeus, and no one suspected her true motives. She made true friends with few people, keeping to herself during her own free time.

When she turned 26, she believed it was now time for the plan to be set in motion. She began to talk to people about the old religion. Although she convinced some that the religion of Asmodeus wasn't the worst, and that it wasn't worth reporting her for simple idle talk, after nearly a year, she made the mistake of unknowingly talking to the witch hunter Balin, who hailed from Barfeld. He immediately placed her under arrest for sedition, and brought her to the worst prison that talingarde had to offer. Before locking her up the snake tried to bite Balin, and he simply caught the snake and tore it from her. Looking at it, he said “Looks like you're guilty of witchcraft too! You certainly have quite a list going in just one night. You also have six months before your head rolls. It is a pity to waste such a pretty face. But it is pretty ones like you who seem to be the worst, may Mistra have mercy on your wicked soul.” Hazel spat at the door he left through.

Throughout the six months, she attempted to charm the guards, but without her snake, it just wasn't as easy. She was tortured and interrogated about both her plans and contacts trying to bring down the House of Darius and her witchcraft. She refused to talk about either until they threatened to scar her face. “It was the orphanage owner, she raised us to hate you. She raised us to know that you were wrong in the world and that you should be taken from power.” She said and the guards let her go back to her cell. Later that day, a guard came in and said, “We got some new jailmates coming in to keep you company sweety. You all got three days before you die, try not to die before that.”
“Well that's too bad, my birthday is in five.” She said with fake disappointment.
“We'll put some candles on the headsman's block for you then.” The guard said and left laughing to himself.
