Dr. Strang |
"Although it would have been nice to find more here," He concedes "The mere presence of an Altar to my lord Anubis is cause for appreciation."
He smiles slightly, "If you all do not mind, I would like to take a moment to pay my respects."
He will now take some time to clean off the altar, making sure to remove the two dead vermin. Then takes a few minutes to say some prayers in the language of ancient Osirion.
Eventually, he gets up with a satisfied nod, ready to continue.
"Thank you for allowing me the time." He says. "Would appear our explorations are nearing their terminus. Let us to it then."
Luke_Parry |
Barely needing more than a gentle bump, the double doors open easily at Manius' touch, revealing the chamber beyond.
A brightly painted chariot sits in the center of this chamber. Beyond the chariot, a large canvas stretches between two stone columns. The skins of several animals-antelopes, great cats, and crocodiles-now faded and deteriorated with age, are tacked to this canvas. A wooden chest, lacquered white and trimmed with gold inlay, sits in the southeast corner. In each corner of the room a small stone shield is molded into the masonry at shoulder height. An open hallway leads to the east, and a set of stone double doors leads south (which is where you have come from).
Carefully looking around the room, Gudrun is able to determine that the chest is both locked, and trapped.
Erevan Stormstride |
"You have proven handy with the locks and traps, dwa...er...Gudrun. I'm sure you will be able to handle this one, as well," Erevan says quietly.
Dr. Strang |
Dr. Strang makes sure to close the door to the Anubis temple securely, as they leave, to prevent more vermin from getting in.
...
As Manius opens the door to the new room, he observes with his usual interest.
"Symbols of his life." Strang observes, examining the various items in the room. "The chariot we saw in the frescoes in the hallway back that way. Clearly it was an important symbol for him, if a bit ostentatious."
He turns his attention to the decaying hides and furs. "Would appear he was quite the hunter as well."
Dr. Strang |
Oh, totally missed that we noticed a trapped chest! Heh!
Strang says a quick prayer, and studies the items in the room, and especially the chest, for magical auras.
cast detect magic, and scan about! Hopefully not more roach swarms.

Gudrun easily unlocks the chest.
Inside the chest (which is itself an art piece, worth 200gp) are three potions...
...as well as two books with thin, gold-plated metal sheets for pages.
Each book weighs 25 pounds and is worth 300 gp.
What now?
Gudrun Cairncarver |
Luke_Parry |
Peering down the short (10' long!) corridor...
Four funerary masks hang on one wall of this short hallway, staring down as if in judgment at anyone standing in the corridor.
Each mask is worth 75gp.
At the end of the hallway, the corridor opens out into a larger room.
Manius Pindeloric |
Manius walks closer following Gundrun as he checks the corridor for sings of traps. If he's told it's save to enter Manius will enter the room to clear the way for Dr.Strang to take a look around and examine the masks.
Erevan Stormstride |
spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 including +2 extra to ID magic items
spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Erevan looks at the potions they found while they move.
"Clearly, these two are curative extracts. This second, dark potion looks exceedingly familiar. It is one of two things, but I cannot be certain," the elf muses.
Dr. Strang |
Dr. Strang examines the contents of the chest with a critical, and magically-enhanced eye.
IDing the potions: Spellcraft, Take 10: 10 + 11 = 21
He nods in agreement as Erevan identifies the first two curing potions, only piping up at the third. "Its another vision enhancer for lack of light, like the other we found."
"Perhaps Akhentepi was afraid of the dark?" He adds, grinning slightly at the elf.
"Now these," He exclaims, somewhat reverently, as he carefully lifts the golden books, turning the pages delicately. "These look very promising!"
He spends the next few minutes, carefully examining the books, occasionally mumbling to himself in quiet excitement.
"This book here," He indicates finally, when he realizes the others are waiting. "Is a biography of Akhentepi himself. Or at least appears to be on a quick glance."
He then picks up the second book, and smiles. "This is the true gem though. This one seems to be documenting various military engagements that occurred over a century of time, well over two millennia ago." He breaths excitedly. "It appears to be quite extensive. I believe I've read mention of a couple of these battles, but the dates are not what I recall. Most of these I've never heard of at all. This is quite the find indeed. The historians will be giddy."
He smiles, clearly pleased with the discovery.
Eventually, with some prodding, he will put the golden books away, and get back to the exploring at hand.
. . .
He looks down the short corridor at the masks speculatively.
Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
"Funerary masks, definitely." He mutters. "Those two there are depicting more modern deities. Abadar and Pharasma." He shrugs slightly. "Or at least how they were represented two thousand years ago."
Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
He turns to look at the other masks. "Those two however, are some of the older Osirion gods who's worship has waned in recent centuries."
"The lion-headed one," He continues, "Was the goddess of war, Sekhmet. The other fellow depicts Osiris, god of the afterlife and resurrection." He pauses, before adding. "And father of my lord Anubis."
He scratches his chin thoughtfully. "An odd collection of deific fellows for sure. Makes you wonder what lay beyond." His eyes stray to the door at the end of the hallway.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Manius Pindeloric |
We did indeed look through a hallway, and then (I) walked in to take a closer look ...there might still be something in the last room that attacks us for looking at the masks ;)
Luke_Parry |
Peering into the next room from the hallway, Manius sees the following:
A table displaying a three-dimensional diorama occupies much of the north side of this room. Three shields with different designs are displayed upon a rack against the east wall, while various weapons hang from another rack along the south wall. Arrayed around the room are five small chests and a clay urn.
More details would actually require entering the room ;-)
Manius Pindeloric |
Manius walks closer following Gundrun as he checks for sings of traps. If he's told it's save to enter Manius will enter the room to clear the way for the others to take a closer look at the 5 small chests and the clay urn
Ajah Denawi |
Ajah has been following along, looking at and commenting on everything incessantly, such that she has faded into background noise.
Sorry if I haven't posted much in the last few days! Busy times in retail-land!
Luke_Parry |
@Ajah: No problem!
When Gudrun moves into the chamber, he is surprised when three of the tiny little figures on the diorama suddenly animate, and jump off the table onto him, attempting to stab him with tiny wooden spears!
WD #1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 = 22, for 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage.
WD #2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 2 = 21, for 1d3 ⇒ 1 damage.
WD #3: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
The wounds thus caused are more of a shock than a real threat, but they do *hurt*.
Dr Strang: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
Ajah: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Gudrun: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Manius: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
WD: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Huh.
Caught completely by surprise, the party can only watch in shock as the creatures continue to swarm all over the hapless Dwarven rogue...
WD #1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 2 = 19, for 1d3 ⇒ 1 damage.
WD #2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 = 11, for 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage.
WD #3: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 2 = 14, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
...who suffers a further two pin-pricks.
Round 1: WD, Ajah, Manius, Erevan, Gudrun, Dr Strang
Party is up.
Manius Pindeloric |
I can't see any enemies on the map, but I assume that since they can hit Gundrun I can get to them with either a 5ft step or a move
Seeing Gundrun get swarmed by animated little diorama figures Manius walks into the room to help out and swings his Falchion at the closest creature
"What are these?"
to hit AC diorama figure: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
slashing damage if hit: 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (2, 4) + 7 = 13
Dr. Strang |
Well, I'm guessing if they are indeed tiny, as the description states, they would have to move into Gudrun's space to attack him. So all 3 are probably sharing a space with the dwarf right now. He's getting swarmed again! =)
Oh, and since Gudrun still had 2 points of damage unhealed, and I'm assuming he was flatfooted for that so he got hit 4 times for 7 damage there... I believe he's currently sitting exactly at 0 again! I must say he has that timing down!
The 1d3 damage and no strength penalty for a tiny creature is impressive though!
Knowledge (arcana/nature/religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 Bah!
"Some sort of construct, perhaps?" He responds, to Manius' query, clearly unsure..
"Though I am not familiar with this process that created these.
Seeing the dwarf getting swarmed and stabbed by the creatures' tiny spears, he channels the healing energies of Anubis once more.
Channel Energy, excluding anything under 3' tall: 1d6 ⇒ 1
But unfortunately, is not able to muster much healing power this time.
Well, that wasn't much! Gets Gudrun off of zero at least, I suppose. Will also heal Manius one more.
How does one decide flanking when a creature is in your square?
Luke_Parry |
As described, they are tiny, and are occupying Gudrun's square.
Ajah draws her longsword, and moves into the room.
Manius takes a swing wit his falchion, chopping one of the dolls in half... although its body does offer more resistance that he was expecting.
Dr Strang recognises these creatures as Warrior Dolls, a variant form of animated object used as tomb guardians, which, despite their small size, are quite resistant to damage (Hardness 5). He then calls on Anubis to heal the wounded.
Round 1: WD, Ajah, Manius, Erevan, Gudrun, Dr Strang
Erevan and Gudrun are up.
Erevan Stormstride |
atk: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 151d10 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Erevan steps forward to deal with the tiny creatures, but finds them exceptionally hard to hit.
Manius Pindeloric |
Sorry, I forgot that tiny creatures have to be in someone's square..and that it's not so easy to cover someone's avatar with little avatars ;)
"Go Gundrun! Step on them or something..or toss them away..or cut them in half."
Luke_Parry |
Right, in the interest of keeping things moving...
Erevan takes a swing at one of the creatures, but it nimbly dodges out of the way.
Gudrun stands in shock, overwhelmed by the fact that he is being assaulted by children's toys.
The two remaining dolls attack Gudrun...
WD #1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, for 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage.
WD #1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10, for 1d3 ⇒ 1 damage.
WD #2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
WD #2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
...but fortunately, only one manages to land a blow... which is still enough to drop him into unconsciousness.
Round 2: WD, Ajah, Manius, Erevan, Gudrun (-10), Dr Strang
Party is up.
Manius Pindeloric |
Seeing Gundrun go down Manius steps to the side to clear room for others to join the fight and takes a swing at one of the 2 remaining animated creatures
To hit AC Creature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 (Unsure if Dr. Strang is wielding a weapon and provides flanking, if he does please add another +2 to hit)
Slashing damage if hit: 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (1, 3) + 7 = 11
Dr. Strang |
Dr. Strang is indeed holding a weapon (his quarterstaff) so Manius will get his extra +2! =)
And if only I'd healed 2, instead of just 1, last time, Gudrun would be standing still!
"The seem single minded in their efforts" Strang observes, unhappily, as the tiny constructs continue to swarm the dwarf.
He once more says a quick prayer, and reaches in to touch Gudrun.
Spontaneously convert his last 1st level spell to a Cure Light Wounds, and cast said cure on Gudrun!
Healing to the Dwarf: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 (will put Gudrun at 4 hp's... though unfortunately still prone)
He then takes a small step to the north.
Since Manius has attacked and got his flank, Strang will 5' step north, so Erevan can get a flank as well, and Ajah can step into Strang's prior position and get a flank with Manius too.
Gudrun Cairncarver |
Sorry about my lack of posting. The festive period made things alittle crazy, but I'll be able to resume posting tomorrow.
Erevan Stormstride |
Power Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 for damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Erevan joins in attacking the tiny guardians, but they prove too quick for him to strike.
Luke_Parry |
Manius takes another swing at one of the tiny dolls, but it dodges out of the way.
Erevan also takes a swing at the dolls, but misses them as they dodge around Gudrun's prone form.
Gudrun 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 - 1 = 4 continues to bleed.
Dr Strang steps forward, and channels healing energy into Gudrun, causing his eyes to flicker open.
Round 2: WD, Ajah, Manius, Erevan, Gudrun (-6), Dr Strang
Ajah is up.
Gudrun Cairncarver |
Why am I bleeding? St rang healed me to positives.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Luke_Parry |
Exactly. Normally, when it is just players acting, I don't mind if people are posting out of order (since players can delay to let someone else act first, but whilst you are unconscious and bleeding out, you can't delay, waiting for the healer ;-)
Just to keep things moving...
Ajah delays.
The two dolls continue to attack the suddenly-conscious Gudrun...
WD: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 4 = 23, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
WD: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 4 = 11, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
WD: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 4 = 10, for 1d3 ⇒ 2 damage.
WD: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 4 = 12, for 1d3 ⇒ 3 damage.
...but luckily, only one manages to hit, wounding him, but not dropping him into unconsciousness again.
Round 3: WD, Ajah, Manius, Erevan, Gudrun (-8), Dr Strang
Party is up.
Manius Pindeloric |
Manius takes a step back (so that he's flanking with Dr.Strang again) and takes a low sweep just above Gundrun's body hoping to bowl one of the constructs away..or smash it into pieces..either will do
To hit AC: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 2 = 25
Damage if hit: 2d4 + 7 ⇒ (4, 3) + 7 = 14
Dr. Strang |
"This is the last of Anubis' divine power I can call on this day." Dr. Strang says, as he holds up his holy symbol, and channels to heal all in the room.
Channel Energy (excluding animated dolls): 1d6 ⇒ 5 hp to everyone
Took a while, but finally topped off Manius. Gudrun to 6. =) Now finish them guys!
Gudrun Cairncarver |
Battleaxe: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 1 - 4 = 01d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Gudrun pulls his battleaxe from his belt and swings up at his attacker from the ground. Sadly, the dwarfs wounds and position make a successful strike almost impossible.
Merry Christmas everyone.
