Somewhere north of the Black Forest near the southern edge of the Empire lies the town of Ubersreik. It is here where our adventure begins. It is, at least for the moment, a quiet unassuming town with all the amenities that travelers and adventurers might require. No grand wizard lives here, however, just a few of the temples of the Gods commonly known to the humans of the land, and somewhere out in the woods, a shrine to Kurnous, despite many attempts by the Sigmarites to have it destroyed.

The tavern at the center of town, The Roaring Boar, is a large inn with rooms to let and a huge fireplace with a huge boar's head mounted over it. The scent of roasted meat often surrounds the place, except when it is covered over by less pleasant odors which often accompany common libation and the tanneries that the town is known for.

Players: You can begin roleplaying your story if you like now, or if you'd like me to come up with some hook, usually based on the strange item you rolled for, I can do that too. But what business do a High Elf, a Wood Elf, and a Dwarf have in the Empire?.....

Ashia is wandering around. She spots a strange dwarf and approaches him.
Hello dear dwarf. I am Ashia. Know if they have good drinks?
Hey Ator

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

Artor was trailing on orc warband that entered the black forest where he lost the trail in a storm. He has come to town to warn people about the potential orc threat.

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

That is a tough one. If you can come up with something, I'll roll with it.

Spiro walks into the room, and makes a grimace of distaste at the odor. He then looks for table set apart from the others, and sits down making sure to wipe off the seat, and the table before sitting. He then makes a point of staring at a wall or window, with his back to the crowd, and awaits being serviced.

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

"well met. I am Artor. The tavern here probably doesn't have good drinks, but they will have drinks which is good enough for now. Do you know anyone in this town? I was tracking a pack of orcs that entered the forest, unfortunately I lost their trail in the storm last and wish to warn the locals."

Artor looks prepared for whatever journeys he has made to reach this location. He has a walking staff in hand, a large crossbow and quiver on his back, and a pair of hand-axes pushed through his belt. Neither his scail mail or clothes are new, but both are in good condition. His mostly empty pack is over one shoulder so he can easily get to his crossbow if needed. He is around his mid 30s and has a great beard that has likely never even been trimmed.

.

Spiro:
I had actually come up for one when I knew you were going Paladin, I just wanted to see if you had anything better than what I came up with. You found the monocle without glass near a Waystone that had been vandalized with Chaos symbols. Fortunately the wards of the stone were strong enough to withstand whatever dark magic was attempted on it, but still the fact that the protective magic of the elves failed to warn the Wood Elves of this sacrilege is alarming. A Jade Wizard might be able to tell more using earth magic.

The bartender looks alarmed at the dwarf. "Aye, black orcs are the worse. We've had enough adventurers roaming through the area going after 'em. On account of the Emperor's bounty, I imagine. But I'll warn any travelers goin' that way. If ye like, I can post a bill on the board near the town well. Though its a common enough problem in these parts I don't think anyone'll be too alarmed." He thinks for a moment. "Always glad to have a dwarf around for things like that."

Surprisingly, the tavern does have some Arnold's Keg, a stout ale of dwarven make, though there's not much variety in selection available here. Arnold's Keg, honeyed wine, and the local ale, bitter from the sour-flavored labors of the town.

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

Artor will order the largest tankard of Arnold's keg he can, along with some food.

"are the woods here not patrolled by the count's men?"

"Not often, 'm afraid. The lands south of the Black Forest (and includin' them often enough) are contested. Some say they ain't part of the Empire, and others say they are." The barkeep shrugs as though it didn't really bother him very much.

But he proceeds to write on a rather greasily smudged piece of paper. "Here's a notice fer ya to post by the well if ya want." He hands the dwarf the sheet and a slightly rusted heavy nail. The barkeep's hasty scrawl indicates he is not the best of writers, but the notice is understandable.

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

Artor will put it up after his meal.

How do you want to handle languages other than common?

I'll put it in Campaign Info.

The Billboard near the Well:

The billboard has several bills posted on it, mostly regarding local jobs and work related to the Tanneries in the town. Some notices regarding lost pets, and a small child's drawing of what appears to be an orc. A prominent sheet of parchment is placed directly under the eave that protects the board from weather conditions, a red wax seal on the bottom of it:

Looking for Work?
Resourceful and intrepid fellows required to assist in house move. Job involves discretion, danger, and some heavy lifting. Only honest applicants will be considered. No layabouts.

Hired candidates will earn 1 Imperial Mark (A gold coin) per day for their labour, plus any expenses incurred.

Ashia will look at the billboard.

This seems nice. Ator would you like to join me in this. I may be a Jade mage, but I don't think I would be strong enough.

"It sounds like an excellent way to make some coin. Just let me nail this notice about orcs here."

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

While Spiro seems to be off in his own world while at the tavern, his ears do pick up when he hears the High Elf mention her profession. He steps closer and pretends to examine the board as well.

"Not to be eavesdropping, but I have acute hearing, and I believe you mentioned something about a Jade Mage". "I could use the assistance of one if you could point me in the right direction".

I am a Jade mage. What do you need. She stares at him.

You may need more than one thing. But why do you need a Jade Mage specifically?

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

Artor reflexively spits when wizards are mentioned. Fortunately he didn't say anything at the same time. As that would have proven very awkward.

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

"Hello". I am Spiro. As I was patrolling part of the forest I came upon a Wardstone that had been painted with symbols of chaos. Though the magic of the wardstones seemed to be able to suppress whatever dark magic was attempted, it is disturbing that they were able to do this vile deed without setting off alarm. In addition I found this near the site. Spiro hands over the broken monocal. "My experience leads me to believe that Earth Magic might reveal more iniformation".

Interesting. I will take a look.

Looking at the monocle: It is a golden hoop that may have once held glass or crystal in it. A small metal loop on the edge of the hoop holds a bit of fine chain.

Ashia:
Where you go from here is up to you. There are several possibilities open, so I suggest you use your imagination as to what a Jade Mage would do in this situation, particularly an intelligent High Elf like yourself, and I will accommodate by providing the rules necessary to accomplish it.

Ashia will look at the Monocle. After a few minutes of gazing at in intently she looks at Spiro.

Which Forest? This is important.

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

"Well of course it's important. I'm dealing with it. I could show the area to you if you wish.

Don't flatter yourself quite yet. Though you do have a certain... nevermind... so many thoughts. Yes this monocle is very important, The location as well could be vital, more vital than you, though again I am unsure. You may be a very important person. Sorry have been away from the empire for... 40 years, since I official had become a Jade Mage. Left to practice my craft. Learned some new things to. I'm wondering now. Why cant I just stay on one topic. Curse of being a genius I suppose.

Ator, we may not need the gold quite yet, If you would be willing to accompany me, and this here elf, we may be having to do something more important than helping someone move. No, we may need the money. Spiro, if you agree to help us help this man, I in return will help you with this monocle. No. Damn I can't decide. Ator, you seem reasonable, could you help?

Anyhow this is not a good item to leave unchecked. I am not a very... experienced jade mage, though I certainly can help. I have a few ideas, ok 10. but that might take a while to explain. Only one involves going to the Jade Order. The rest are possible dangerous. They seem more fun. But yes this is important. Did you find a piece of glass or crystal near it? Hmmm. If it wasn't so hard to decide what to do, we could have made money by now... Money can buy some good drinks. Elf man,I assume you are a knight? And this is why you felt it important to bring to me.

Artor, I could use someone, who seems to have a knowledge of Fighting, such as yourself. And you knight. I am neither strong or hardy, so If I am to pursue this monocle as this knight wishes me to, I will need you two.

Ashia will gaze longingly at the list of drinks.

But yes this must be dealt with. You said dark magic. And wardstones. And no alarm. Mayhaps who ever did this was an insider to whoever lives near by. Thank you sir knight. While you may not be as... Logical, yes thats a good word to use, as I am, you made a very smart decision coming to me. Now Who wants to hear my 10 Ideas?

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

"I have no immediate need of coin and the taint of chaos is ever a danger. But the money has a defined timeline while this other matter does not. And depending on the nature of these threat we may be glad of some coin in the future, so I say we make some easy money first."

An old woman approaches the well, notices the elves and the dwarf standing by the billboard and skirts to the other side of the well. She says nothing to them, but warily hums a song to herself as she draws a bucket of water to fill the ewer in her other hand.

All right. Spiro, while I continue to think as to what to do, Would you aid Ator and I get some money, which could be useful later on?

Ashia then go to innkeeper Where can I find Herr Hendrick?

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

"You're kidding of course. You're going to follow this greedy dwarf's suggestions for even more coin, when the future of the elven forest could be at stake... Here give me the monocle back. I'm sure you're not the only Jade Mage around. I at least know what is more important.

Not trying to cause trouble, just being my normal arrogant self.

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

"And if we encounter more trouble than the three of us can handle beardless one? Hard mercenaries require hard money to pay them, and unless you have some hidden wealth I am not seeing, none of us have such ready money. Is it not better to take some time to be prepared then blunder forward without a plan?"

Ashia:
As Spiro becomes more angry with you, the monocle frame begins to tingle in your hand.

The innkeeper looks at Ashia. "Ah, Hendrick, you say? Must have been the notice ye saw, then. A good enough fellow that, and has traveled around the area a bit. If'n ye need directions someplace, he can probably point out the way. I'll see if the lordling's up yet."

He leans over and pulls a chain attached to a bell behind his desk. As the bell rings here, a bell can also be heard in the rooms on the upper floors.

Both of you silence! i have had enough of both Dwarven and Elven arrogance for the day. This reminds me why I left. You there, Spiro. You want to get this done, Then we do it my way, or I will find out what this thing is without you! There aren't many Jade Mages who would help for free, and Ator is right. Unless you have some hidden wealth then you won't go anywhere but a grave!

We will need the money, for research and aid. Unless you have some clue what this is. Ohh, wait ye don't. Now, this little monocle, is some how connected to your emotions, or emotions in general. Maybe it is connected to you. Maybe it is beyond my current grasp as I have had little time for Research, which CAN BE VERY COSTLY.

Sorry, good sir. I seem to have lost my temper, we may need directions to this move. Please tell my dwarf friend here.

DM:

Main thoughts were similar to this actually. "As Spiro becomes more angry with you, the monocle frame begins to tingle in your hand." Definitely interested to see how it goes out. It being connected to the Paladin seems funny, but it does look that way. Two major Ideas are go back to the site where he found it, or try to find the Jade Order nd look for a book with something similar.

That woman there is humming. And this is tingling. It may be connected to the Knight, but It could be her.

She will approach the woman. What are you doing ma'm? I am a member of the Jade Order, and currently hunting down minions of Chaos. A knight just helped me get a good lead on an important item, tainted by the chaos. You saw us, and started humming. Is there something you want to say to us. I can help you?

Ashia will leave the woman as rapidly as she came and grab the monocle back. Then re approach the woman. Before She sits down, she glares at Spiro.

Ator when you get the drinks bring them here. This woman could be of some help.

Spiro. Next time you try to take something from a mage, be warned it will not end well. Remember I have been dealing with Chaos in ways you haven't. You think you toad sticker frightens me? If ye want your monocle, then you will have to be with Ator and I. Ator doesn't seem like the Bad type. And he is right. Get that self righteous nonsense out of your head, or ye won't be able to defend the elven forest. You will be six feet under and Ator And I will be busy fighting Chaos. That stuff between yer ears is for more than just Your self righteous thoughts! Because I am not in agood mood now you useless elf. The Dwarf is right. If ye can't bother to plan, why should I bother to help.

Sorry ma'm, Where were we?

The old woman swiftly shakes her head. "Ach, no, mistress! I need nuthin' from such fine folks as yerselves." She backs away with an apologetic look on her face, almost forgetting to take the ewer back with her as she hastily departs.

The barkeep raises an eyebrow at the "argument" brewing between the elves and the dwarf, but draws three tankards of the dwarven stuff.

Just as a nobly dressed gentleman in blue pantaloons and doublet comes down the stairs in the inn. Most likely, the same Herr Hendrick in the post.

Examining the Monocle
Nature: The Monocle is made of a golden metal, most likely gilded brass. The few remaining shards of glass seem to be plain crystal, but there is something unusual about the way the glass has fractured which knowledge of nature does not reveal.

ok so it is a normal monocle, that Vibrates.... and was found near a Chaos sign. Could I use Nature to determine the crystal, and anything unnatural about it in general?

Sorry ma'm Just asking around. I don't suspect you. Just wanted to know if ye knew anything.

Dammit Spiro, look what you did! if you hadn't been such a self righteous Idiot and gotten on my nerves, we could have had a good discussion with that lovely woman. No offense intended of course. There was not much you could do.

Yes looks like it.

She will call out to the gentleman.

Hello good sir, are you Herr Hendricks? We called you down, in regards to the bulletin on the wall. We have some questions about the job, and some information about the area, and such. May you please come discuss this with us?

"An Asur! By Sigmar! Most assuredly, my lady." He is amazed to see that Ashia is a high elf, and just as amazed at her companions, if a little startled by the conflicted air that surrounds them.

Going to wait here and see if Spiro wants to post anything more. Trying not to get too ahead of one player.

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

Spiro would not exactly give back the monocle so easily, if he was ever able to snatch it. He will also not stand by and be insulted by another. I'm afraid once again the Paladin has gotten the party into a pickle. Maybe I should have just played a fighter :-)

"I will not stand by and be insulted by my own kin. Unless you choose to add thievery to consorting with the enemy I suggest you either act upon this great mystery, or return my property immediately, so that I can act upon what is important".

"I must admit I am rather shocked. I'm not surprised that the dwarf chooses safe money over helping out elves, but you... you have surprised and disappointed me. Tis no wonder our race weakens... does no resolve or sense of duty remain among the High Elves"?

male Dwarf Ranger 1 HP 11/11

"Did wood elves loose their brains as well as their dignity when they "bonded" with the forest? No one is saying we ignore this problem, just that we take a bit of time to do this other job first as it actually pays money. Oh, wait, you foresty types may not understand the concept. I will break it down for you; us civilized folk use this thing called money, usually in the form of precious metals to pay for items instead of bartering like savage woodland tribesmen. Now that we have that sorted, if we need anything to help our cause, like say supplies or mercenaries, we have to pay them, instead of just asking nicely and offering some choice leaves that they can use "medicinally" later, or however you barter with other elves. But as I said before you can go off and get yourself killed for all I care at this point, it will save your self-righteous prattle from everyone else involved. Now you can either sit down, shut up, accept the plan and my kindly offered dwarven beer, or I spill your blood in the street this very hour and maybe the headache you have given me will go away."

Tread carefully wood elf, the dwarf has had enough of your self-righteousness.

Assuming this is all taking place in front of Herr Hendrick...

"What problem is that? Has something been stolen? My master will gladly replace it in exchange for the work we have to offer. And if you truly have need of coin, there will be no short supply of it."

He looks around the room carefully, but the barkeep is cleaning out glasses apparently ignoring them. Nevertheless Herr Hendrick lowers his voice. He pulls out his hand from behind his back, where he had been holding it in supposedly a gentleman's pose. It is heavily bandaged.

"There are strange events afoot. And if one of you is a skilled mage or highly perceptive as I have known the elves to be, you may be able to help us garner the information we need and take the actions that need to be taken."

Now if you want help Then accept it. If you think I am aligned against elves then you are no better than those who serve CHAOS!

I Am sick of your actions. In fact I will end the elf's weakness. Herr. can We get your opinion. I, a Jade Mage, am willing to work and save the elves free of CHARGE, and stop the spreading of the chaos. Yet because I want to make sure we have what we need, money wise, he is saying that he will go find another. Do you think he can find another FREE jade Mage?

Ashia will pull out her sword.

Want to do this the hard way you idiot. If we must do it the hard way, then I challenge you Spiro. I Challenge you. Must you fight against your ally in the battle against Chaos. Will you kill one of your own kind? Or will you be smart?

Male 1/2 Elf (Elvish) - Human appearance, Elvish features Fighter/ 1 (Archer)

Spiro looks at the sword in Ashia's hands and you can see him physically deflate. A look of forlorn sadness comes to his features.

"Has it come to this then? Brother draws blade on brother. If this is how we are then perhaps my war against chaos has no hope. But I for one will fight it till it's bitter end. You choose your own battles, so I must choose mine. I will not fight you, nor you noble dwarf no matter how misguided I fear your intentions. I leave you to your toils, and I shall seek heroes elsewhere".

Then with a final bow, Spiro begins to walk back the way he arrived, his head hanging with sadness.

Spiro would prefer to take the item with him, however if Ashia takes it he will still leave without it. He has tangible proof of the forces of chaos invading his land, and will not wait for this to be resolved... Sorry.

Ashia looks over to Spiro and shakes her head.
Then I wish you luck. I know I could help you. I believe I know why you do this. You wish to preserve your home. Know I will help, but if this is truly the power of chaos, we are outnumbered. the beauty of the Elven forest, the light, the good, will always be in danger.

I left society for 40 years, and there is so much more. If you want to preserve the beauty, the Light of Nature, as a mentor once said, You must sometimes abandon it. Even if it is the last thing you want to do.

I believe that this is important for you. Yet, Without knowing what this is, without the knowledge that we may be able to do just abit more, I cannot commit my self. I am sorry. I want to preserve the Light as much as you. I have studied magics of the earth, of the light. If anyone can help you it is me. I get that you want to go off, but you came here to find someone to help you in the first place.

You go off now, you won't find anyone. I can help, but I need to make sure that we have some, even if it is minimal, money to fall back on.

Ashia looks at Spiro. Duille

Leaves fall over Spiro. There are leaves of many colors, most prominent being yellow, red, and orange.
I love druid craft.

On hearing that Spiro is heading off alone, Herr Hendrick is alarmed. "I would not, master elf, depart in this fashion. It is best to stay by your allies, at least for a few nights, even if there is disagreement between you. I say this, because...." He looks over conspiratorially at the barkeep and back again. "Beastmen have been active to the North Woods, and Black Orcs to the south. While my master has sent to the Emperor for aid, we have not yet heard back, that is part of the reason why I have asked for strong-armed individuals. It is the beastmen that concern me the most though, Orcs and Goblins can be defended against, but if the Beastmen are active, something else is going on."

He takes a deep breath before continuing, keeping his voice low.
"If there is some pressing matter, I am permitted by my Master to promise men-at-arms for that task once my Master's move is complete.... There are other issues, occultic in nature, which I will not utter here."

Now Mister Hendrick, was it. We are arguing over a monocle. This knight here found it and is trying to figure things out about it. While the dwarf Ator, and I want to do this job and have a small amount of money, before heading off to a possible suicide mission.

But his plight moved me. Is there anything you can tell us about this?

As for pressing matter apparently this was found by a Wardstone that had been painted with symbols of chaos. Though the magic of the wardstones seemed to be able to suppress whatever dark magic was attempted, it apparently did not. If we did this, could you supply the men at arms to help us Aid Spiro?
Now Finally there is the occult matters. Should we head upstairs?

Depending on what harmless means Ashia may have the monocle. As describe one of druidcraft's abilities is to create a harmless sensory effect, such as wind. I figured a small wind could be strong enough to get me the monocle, without hurting anyone. Any how If I do have it I would show it to Hendrick. If not I would gesture for Spiro to show it to the man.
Spiro the emphasis on men at arms is meant for you

final thoughts. People here have seen me perform at least one feat of magic. The leaves are hard to miss. The wind may have been missed. Did I screw over any cover I could have had.

Herr Hendrick nods. "Yes, of course. Once the move is complete, we can provide two able-bodied soldiers for... Spiro's task."

As an Asur, being able to perform some magic is regarded as second nature by most other races, especially those ignorant of the High Elves culture.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Ashia will pull the hood of her cloak so her face is covered by shadow.
Nothing to see her folks. Just doing some... basic magic as a show of skill.

Teann.
The door to the inn opens.
See nothing to dangerous. Infact I could do a small trick if you folks want.

She will then whisper to Spiro, Ator, and Hendrick. If you guys want to go somewhere else to discuss this, let me know. I should be able to distract these folk with leaves.
