Ashe will accept Maiden Hilgar's cooperation.

"Believe me, I empathize with your consternation over this Milady Hilgar Vanyar. You may have indeed been terribly misled... but the fault is not yours! Our task is to find out specifically who is to blame for this miscarriage of law and order. Your assistance would be most appreciated!"

Striding purposely onto the lift to the control lever - he will gesture to Hilgar to stand near him as everyone else files onto the lift.

Once everyone is in place, Ashe will trigger the lever and push the button for up.

Updated Map Please.

On the floor Ashe will gesture to Maiden Hilgar to follow him as he gives his companions a moment or two to prepare... then he opens the lift doors and escorts Hilgar to toward the position of the two remaining Grey Maidens on duty.

Speaking, "Well met honored Grey Maidens... I am {Lieut.} 'Sir' Asherick Whiteplume, Deputy of the Korvosan Guard, Paladin of Iomdae. Your Field Commander Grey Maiden Hilgar Vanyar has words for you..."

Diplomacy: Take 10! 10 + 10 = 20

Once you get onto the lift everyone can plainly see controls that cause the contraption to operate - there is a lever and 2 buttons. Peering closely, Una notices a hole where there ought to be a third button.

Riding up in the lift Damoc considers the likely situation ahead. Two Grey Maiden guards, Dr Davaulus and perhaps a few helpers. The commander should take the guards out of the equation. Ashe wants no fatalities. He needs something flexible and non-lethal. Something that will work even if the commander doesn't hold up her end....

In the pause and space created while Ashe and the commander advance Damoc rummages in his bag and comes up with a scroll of web. Waiting for everyone else to clear the elevator, he gives Una a nervous smile.

Then he follows the others, looking around himself carefully.

Ashe will acknowledge Una's discovery across the telepathic link of Majenko, {"Understood Una, I'll keep my eye open for it."}

Then sending a telepathic message in-general to his party, {"Friend Varrel, if Hilgar is able to get her remaining Grey Maidens to stand down and not interfere before we enter the 'Doctor's' offices... I'd REALLY like you up here with us! The maidens are bound... and unarmed, I doubt they will be trouble in the immediate time we will have need of you to subdue the physicians! I'd like you to sleep hex any and all physicians. I don't want corpses, I want prisoners who can be questioned... and more importantly interrogated by the Field Marshal's experts. Varrel considers the request, Ashe was being shortsighted. He was unconcerned that Majenko would rely his message to all his allies. {{You and the rest can handle it Ashe. If even a single Maiden or Cultist escapes, our lives are forfeit. I WILL NOT leave these prioners unattended, there are ways to do magic with ones hands and mouth bound. I can fly under such conditions, I cannot know what they could do. And I mean it, anyone who cannot be subdued has to die. We know the queen is behind or at least heavily involved in this. If she finds out we did this you will bring the full might of A MONARCH on top of us. How many guards and assasins can we kill before we are all taken before her? Secrecy is our only protection in this. You risk our lives, your mother, Trinia and the people of this city if we are killed. Take them alive if you can, Stabilize any who fall but we HAVE to keep a lid on this or we are all lost. Accept you cannot save everyone Ashe. There will be casualties. Our priority is to keep this quiet and get them to the Marshall or silence them forever. }}

Varrel's relayed messenge ends and what's more, the magus refuses to answer any further mental requests. The message was Harsh but Ashe needed to stop hoping this could be a clean mission. The paladin had TOLD the queen too much about how much the group had discovered. Varrel had supported him against Una's chiding long enough. Graxer's pragmatism had reminded the elf of his own faith.

Varrel worshipped the patron of VENGEANCE. A punisher of the wicked. Were it not for the information the captured cultists possessed, Varrel should have already killed them.
He paced back and forth around the prisoners. ...the would receive their punishment, he would only suffer them to live for as long as it took to wag their tongues.

Celestial:
"I think perhaps I have failed with them all. Maybe I have pushed too hard for justice they are all just so angry and uncaring of the lives they end? They are unwilling to see that even those who at present may serve evil... might change their ways if given a chance and a choice unvarnished by coercion or fear or simple misleading untruths. I have never held back punishment of those engaged in evil action when discovered... but they fail... or refuse to see this either. I don't really know if I'm doing any good with them at all! Perhaps I should do this alone... as my father before me? It is not their fight anyways... they just refuse to see that - 'How we win the fight against evil is just as if not more important in why we win!' Its not enough just to survive the depredations of evil... one needs to be worthy to survive!! If we adopt the merciless, unyielding, blood-letting ways of the wicked... of what victory do we actually win if we forfeit our souls to the same evil we fight?"

Another map update...

Hilgar reaches out.

"This is the button to go up... that one is used to return down again."

The lift rises silently to the upper level. The rough functionality of the warehouse below gives way to beige tile and a white hall on this more officious-looking floor. A door engraved with images of rampant gazelles stands to the south, their once fine teak bearing obvious scores and gapping chips from rough use.

Two Grey Maidens are here, half-drawing their swords as the lift doors open but relaxing when they see Hilgar who holds up a hand.

"These people are from the Korvosan Guard. They have business with Doctor Davaulus," she explains.

* This is to put the armed maidnes at ease to lessen the fact that their commander may seem coerced into this arrangement... and is not armed. So Ashe has clearly identified himself as an officer of the law and stated why he and his party are present to put to rest their hostilities - hopefully.

Addressing Cmdr Vanyar and the two Grey Maidens, "Well met honored Grey Maidens, I am Asherick Whiteplume, deputy Korvosan Guardsman, Paladin of Iomedae. I am spearheading an investigation into some pretty damning allegations as to what Reiner Davaulus and his 'physicians' are actually doing here! If everything checks out we'll be leaving with no further disruption of operations here. I take it to understand that none of you have been beyond those double doors to Davaulus' inner offices?"

In response to Graxer's... somewhat confrontational address Ashe adds, "... or if you prefer; you may accompany Commander Vanyar, as per our agreement with her, as long as you do not interfere and obey her direct orders."

Stepping back in time to the elevator

Damoc frowns. Sleep is not one of his spells. Still the web should provide a passable alternative in the short run. When Ashe mentions invisible stalkers or guardians, Damoc's mind flips instantly to Una. How did she hide so completely? I had no idea she was even in the room, nor did the Maidens. How did she get in? Was she a spellcaster too? I haven't been in the company of so many magic users since the Acadamae. Luckily I brought some scrolls to see the inivisible.

Varrel's response to Ashe jars Damoc back to the present action, and reawakens his own fears about royal retaliation. Still, his opinion is split. Killing the men out of hand doesn't seem right, but every witness is a threat. Even the corpses are a threat when the dead can speak.

Leave it to the professionals. They'll decide the right course.

He tentatively tries broadcasting the news about web and see invisibility to Majenko and the group. Then he reaches into his bag for a see invisibility scroll.

I had written the responses while out of internet range, but never had a chance to upload them later.

And , the present moment,

Ashe speaks his name and Damoc feels instantly nauseous. Cayden's curses, now they have my name too. He steps forward to cast the knock spell, but he's slow and Graxer beats him to it. He waits, a little flustered, a little put out that the dwarf has upstaged him, and a little guilty that Graxer is essentially spending more money than he needs to.

After the dwarf finishes Damoc asks, "Have you another such scroll?"

If the answer is negative Damoc offers him one. "Best perhaps to spread our resources."

The 2 Grey Maidens are uneasy, but are taking Hilgar's lead. As for Hilgar, she is remaining calm and professional, her anger has been put aside.

She steps forward and watches as magic is employed, raising one hand to restrain the other two who look for a moment as if they might have intervened.

The lock clicks open as the last words of the scroll fall from Graxer's lips.

You see before you what looks like another hospital ward. Rows of white-sheeted beds line the walls of this room. Each is occupied, every bed bearing a patient restrained by leather straps that bind the figure to the sturdy metal frame. At the room’s center stretch simple wooden worktables, each covered in fluid-filled beakers, intricate glass tubes, small burners, and other alchemical instruments.

There are 15 beds, all occupied by comatose patients. Three 'Physicians' are also here. One looks round.

"What are you doing here? Commander, you were ordered to keep everyone out!" he says crossly, if a bit muffled through the mask. (It's not Davaulus, by the way.)

Ashe strides in almost ignoring the physician's protest, surveying the scene.

His brow furrows in critical suspicion. Walking over to one of the nearby cots Ashe looks at the patients ... and tries to discern why they are being retrained? Do any of them show signs of Blood Veil infection?

Healing: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

It is late in coming but Ashe replies to the 'physician', "I am Asherick Whiteplume, Deputy Korvosan Guardsman... following up an investigation into what exactly you cultists of Urgathoa are actually doing here! Don't bother denying it... we have already discovered the truth from the cultists physicians downstairs. These are my companions and are also under orders with the Authority of Field Marshal Cressida Kroft. I am also a skilled healer. Why are these patients being restrained and what are you doing to them exactly? Why are they comatose, unlike the other patients downstairs?"

To punctuate his point Ashe holds out one of the Urgathoa holy symbols retrieved from the cultists downstairs.

This is a somewhat less provocative and subtle ploy to rattle the physicians to making some snap reaction. If they admit to being Urgathoan... as that in itself is not a crime... they may be not involved in criminal activity. But Ashe expects them to react otherwise and his action is to trigger a response; he expects it will be panic from them. Honest faithful not involved in wrong-doing will likely react differently than sudden panic and Ashe is counting on that. Also, he has not told them they are under arrest or being accused of any actual crime nor that the physicians downstairs were apprehended. He has simply revealed that they know they are faithful of 'The Pallid Princes'... Ashe is expecting a criminal of dishonest intentions to reveal themselves assuming they are discovered... and react violently. Which is Exactly what Ashe wants; honest folk do not attack officers of the legal authority performing their civic duties.

Mentally Ashe grimaces, {Darn you Varrel... this would be so much easier if you would give up your blood thirstiness for just this once and be here when we need you most so we could just slumber these villains and subdue them quickly right now... rather than use these overly complicated and potentially violent ploys!}

Majenko takes flight to conceal himself within the rafters of the room above the doorway to any other exit out of this room. Stinger at the ready to strike when Ashe gives the word to begin subduing... and dragon senses searching for any hidden threats.

Looking past the others from his place at the back of the pack Damoc focuses on the doctors' wooden worktables, each covered in fluid-filled beakers, intricate glass tubes, small burners, and other alchemical instruments.

Detect magic to try to suss out their purpose if magical; first round should cover the physicians too, but his view is going to be partially obstructed by the party.

And where do the Maidens end up after the door opens? Damoc isn't sure he trusts them at the party's back if melee occurs.

I AM staying my hand. We have evidence showing these Urgothans are involved in the spread on the plague. It is out of consideration for the big picture I allow them to keep breathing. This is not the time. We can discuss theology later, just be assured none will escape and barring stupidity none will die.}

Those employing healing knowledge see that the patients, all drugged unconscious, do not have blood veil, despite silver coins - the same as the ones distributed from the death's head coffers - being placed on their bodies. Most show signs of having been operated on or otherwise mauled about.

The items on the worktables do not appear to be magical, apart from a death's head coffer that stands open there.

The Physician who spoke before steps forwards.

"Who we worship is none of your concern, Guardsman! We are seeking a.. a cure for this plague and we do not want to be disturbed in our work. Get out at once!" He sounds indignant.

The others are reaching under their robes.

Of the Grey Maidens, Hilgar is with you. She is standing at Ashe's shoulder. The other two are still in the hall by the lift (F6).

Majenko perches over the door to the south. He can sense someone in the room beyond.

Ashe's reaction ... is most telling.

He lowers his visor, hefting his shield as he calmly draws his Dauntless Heart in the INHERITOR'S GAUNTLET fist, causing the enchanted sword to glow with the holy fervor and quiet rage of the Goddess' Paladin awakened & unleashed, "Commander Vanyar, I can assume you see what is going on here and need no explanation? Guard the door please... let none of these villains escape."

There is a cold metallic hardness to Ashe's voice as he addresses his companions, "Dead or alive... let none escape!!!"

He charges the one closest to the exit near the south of the room... as he hears Majenko's mental cue of another being in the room beyond Ashe wishes to be close to that doorway. So he moves to the physician closest to that door... and puts him to the sword!

Yelling "For VICTORY! For the HEART!!"

Scroll already in hand, Damoc wastes no time reading a web into being. A mass of sticky grey fibers stretches from floor to beds to wall, hindering the doctor's movement.

DC 17 Reflex save to avoid initial entrapment. That's a link to the spell.

Damoc wants to place the spell to catch as many doctor's as possible without blocking any doors or Ashe's path forward.

As the Physicians were about to launch an attack anyway, I'm ruling no surprise: we'll just go into combat.

And I'd better roll some initiatives...

Physician #1: Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Physician #2: Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Physician #3: Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Round 1

Physician #2 steps forwards, drawing a club and gesturing with his other hand. He raises the club with the obvious intention of bashing Ashe with it.

Physician #2 attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Damoc then launches into action, lifting the scroll in his hand and reading sonorous, mind-twisting words... and a dense network of sticky threads manifests across the room.

Physician #3 (who is the furthest away) is enveloped in the web, and had better make his save.... 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 or not... he comes to a halt, trapped and using some rather rude words about it!

Physician #1 (the one who was talking) also pulls out a club and tries to belt the poor paladin with it.

Physician #1 attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, damage 1d62 ⇒ 34

Ashe draws himself up, his sword springing into his hand glowing with the power of his deity.... and had better roll some dice to see if he hits (oh, and tell me who he's hitting)!

Graxer casts divine favour and steps forwards ready to fight (Physician #2 is closest).

Deriven draws his sword and, cursing in fury, chops at Physician #1. The blow strikes true and Physician #1 curses as blood spurts...

OK, actions and rolls for the next round, please.

Hilgar, should anyone spare an eye for her, has done as bid and retreated to the north doors.

In the wake of his spell, Damoc watches as the others begin to dominate the combat. Ahhh. Now we're killing them. My mistake.

He tries, not a spell, but a magical trick that was one of the first manifestations of his power. A ghostly green fist appears in the air and strikes at one actively meleeing doctors.

Hold action until just before the next physician goes. If any are still in the fight bonk him with a telekinetic fist. (Transmuter school power -- ranged touch ) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 ... damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Not that I expect either of the unwebbed doctors to be left alive by then.

In the web post, I explictly said not to block doors if possible. I wanted to let Ashe get where he's going.

Physician #2 flails at Ashe again.

Physician #2 attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Damoc mutters more of his mindwrenching (and tongue-twisting) words and a glowing green fist appears in the air before him...

... lashing out at Physician #1 just as he's raising his club again, felling him! His eyes roll back in his head.

Ashe smites mightily at Physician #2, sending him reeling, blood gushing... then steps nimbly towards the falling Physician #1 - do you want to hold your blow or finish him for good and all?

Graxer swings at Physician #2 and takes his head clean off of his shoulders, the masked head bounces across the floor!

Deriven sees Physician #1 on the floor and may carve him up or hold his blow.

Physician #3 is still stuck in the web. There is just about a clear path past to the door, although the web is anchored to the wall above it, much to poor Majenko's consternation!

OK.Physician #1 is out cold at least and may be dead if Ashe and Graxer choose to land those blows. Physician #2 is dead, losing your head tends to have that effect. Physician #3 is stuck in Damoc's web and looks none too pleased about it.

The webbed Physician turns out to be a scrawny fellow under his mask, with a bad complexion and straggly hair. He drops his club and offers no resistance.

Physician #1 is unconscious, so offers no resistance either.

The notes on the table show that the 'patients' here had all shown natural resistance to blood veil and that the Physicians working here were trying to find out why. Their methods were crude and would never pass an ethics committe review.

Hilgar directs the two Grey Maidens to remove the corpse, retrieving the head herself. She pulls off her helmet, revealing a beautiful face marred by a hideous scar on her left cheek that only just misses the eye. Her distress is evident...
