Delain offers a quirked eyebrow at Ariarh’s comment.

”In truth – the art of diplomatic speech is done to disguise true intention – so that a person may not be cut down or slain for saying too much, or the wrong thing. At least, that is what my mentor once told me… when I was younger,” Delain says frankly, but with a subtle coloring in his voice as if stirred by some distant memory.

”Yet, it is still a technique taught to any noble – for in court we are surrounded by many enemies who would seek to kill us – or to supplant our family – or use us for their own ends. They watch us like a snake watches mice… eager for a chance to strike, or to take from our family. If we misspeak – if we say the wrong thing, or overextend ourselves – then we suffer for it. This cannot occur – for we cannot let our own family suffer. So we speak with innuendo’s – veiled suggestions, hints, postulations, and other subtleties, so that our meaning may be known – without stated – so no one may try to use our own words against us.”

He turns his gaze to the south – staring far over the plains for a moment.

”I do not prefer speaking without open words, but it is something that is in me – through instruction and teaching,” he adds with a brief shrug.

”However – on the open plain, a captain must address his men with openness there is no such talk. A captain among men must be as direct and simple as possible, so there can be no misunderstanding when matters of life and death are in the balance.”

”Therefore, I cleave from such matters as court speech and will be with you as I would with my men,” he says, his voice and tone shifting to become somewhat more blunt.

”Lady – I am not used to treating with women who are not in the courts – or in general; for there are few women who ride to battle.”

”So, if you’ll pardon me – I shall be forced to speak to you as I would as one of my men.”

”Lady, you are beautiful, and that alone would attract my eye – but you possess courage, and all men of honor find courage beautiful. And that quality attracts my sense of purpose. Further – you are wise, and patient, and kind – and all of these attract my spirit. Thus I am drawn to you – and this why I desired to take you on this journey,” he says with a polite nod and bow.

Delain now remains silent as the wind blows his hair back from his eyes, and he stares intently at Ariarh – his eyes hard, and his face emotionless. It is clear he has spoken the truth, and what is on his heart – but, more then that? No honorable nobleman would be so forward with a lady as to take direct action without more evidence of interest – and, as Ariarh has not demonstrated direct interest, he awaits her words.

She watches his strong face, how the wind whips at his hair and is fascinated by both. She approaches him, a little more confidently, and standing on the tip of her toes, lifts her hand and brushes a stray strand of hair from his face. Looking up into his grey-green eyes, now so familiar to her, she smiles openly, "I look forward to every moment in your company. I have lamented that business preoccupies our days all too often and we have no time alone, together, like this." Her fingers brush his face, his bristly cheek. "You are unlike any man I have ever known and I celebrate the good fortune of our meeting. You are a man of honour, courage, and integrity; you possess a loyalty that is admirable and most desirable. It does not hurt that you are handsome of face and form and that when I am near you my heart hammers as though I have run or ridden a great distance--It surprises me how you cannot hear it when you are beside me", once more her voice trails off softly, partly in shyness, partly in reflection as her heartbeat elevates due to his nearness and rugged scent.

Her sapphire eyes are bright, eager, probing. "I would know you better, personally, Delain Esserian. My heart and soul demand it. Yet, before I say more on the subject, I must ask without giving offence, is there a lady back in Brevoy that awaits your return, that holds your heart?" She was afraid to ask the question, yet needed to know if he was a free man that could be pursued/claimed by one such as herself.

Delain smiles a bit, though briefly –

”No, lady – there is no woman for me at home. In truth, my mother laments this fact, for she feels it would be good that I am married with an heir to the family, though my private heart feels she merely yearns for more children to care for.”

”For my father – he would have me married as well, and with a wife give his succession fruit – yet, our family, despite its wealth and power, is not overly favored at court – and the only folk who seek for marriage with us are lords that seek to prostitute their daughters to curry my father’s favor. Further – the men that may possess daughters of quality – with a worthy dowry – are always seeking to use their women as pawns to further their house – and do not see advantages to allying with a house that functions mainly as a guardian to the frontier. For, if they would so ally with us – then, they would be forced to commit themselves to our cause, should we war.”

”For myself? I care little for either issue – for neither the daughters of lowly nobles seeking to gain our wealth – nor the daughters of men aligned to our own level – none that I have met are, to me – of my taste. They are either simpering fools seeking to use me for their own ends – or they are ruthless harpies eager to bind me to some purpose, what that is I cannot say, and in truth – I do not care,” he adds with a shrug.

”In the end – I grow bored with such things – and honestly – they anger me. For when I’m in court – listening to the high speech of court, and the backhanded insults that I am not allowed to address… it angers my blood. I prefer the open steppe – a fleet horse – and the wind in my hair.”

”I see the same in you – and, were all things equal, and we were merely two people of the free realms I should say I would ride free with you, for you stir within me deep passion. However – things are not equal, and I am a Duke’s son and am forced to first consider the good of my father’s House – and my people. However – you are not simple rancher’s daughter now, are you?” he adds, his tone suddenly shifting playfully.

”Should I bring news of your beauty and courage to my people – they would be stirred by words on your spirit and the fire of your heart – not to mention your beauty and strength. Even so – in truth – though that may please my parents, they would be more pleased – I should think – to know you are well-founded from a fine place. However – I shall not be overly worried on such matters now, for now; I am merely happy to see the beauty around me, and enjoy the pleasure of the sky and wind and the sun and grass.”

”Not to mention – I enjoy also your presence with me, too,” he adds – his hand taking hers in his own heavy calloused one.

She knew their respective stations in life would prove to be a barrier and she stood before him, her hand still in his, concerns flying through her mind so fast, insecurity gnawing at her heart's muscle. She would not have been good enough for his House, his people, as Ariarh Kane, rancher's daughter. But Baroness Ariarh Kane of the Republic of Praxis, the Lady leader residing within the capital city of Saravale would mayhap appease them but only just. She could not blame him for saying such words to her for this was how he was raised -- for the betterment of his House and family name. She wondered if he sought love ... whether it would be important to him in a wife who bore his heirs and daughters. She did not like these noble standards -- the machinations of court and the trade of noble daughters to noble sons -- all in the name of greater power and wealth. Yet, here was this man who stood before her, clasping her hand with his own, sincerely speaking his mind on the matter of gaining a wife. These Brevoyian courtiers and nobles will despise me for my "lowly" beginnings. They may smile and simper at the Baroness of Praxis, yet the rancher, druid and baroness are one and the same. She knew she had not said a word for long minutes but she had to catch her breath and calm her mind, her raging heart. The people of Saravale and the entire nation depended on her for this alliance and she would not let them down, would not embarrass them before the Breyovian court.

Looking up at Delain with shimmering sapphire eyes, forestalling the chaos within, she finds her voice,"I understand the responsibility you have to your House and people to marry well and I do not condemn you for it. I was not raised the same as you -- my parents married for love -- and together they have forged a wonderful life. Aye, there are dangers and my family do not have the same means or wealth as your own, yet they manage to overcome adversity with every breath in their body and I am proud of them and honoured to be their child." She licks her dry lips before continuing, "So, from what you have told me, your parents would not be happy with one such as I, even as a baroness, for I am not born of wealth and from elevated courtly circles?" Her fingers squeeze his, needing his strength in this moment, wondering what the gods had in mind when they placed them together. It could not be for naught, yet if her experience with Khrovin was anything to go by ... She shook herself not wanting to think on it. That was a mistake -- born of inexperience and Delain Esserian -- she had to put her faith in a man -- and he seemed worthy of holding and caring for it. Yet, his parents made her fearful -- if she gave him her complete heart and they disapproved then where would she stand ...

Male Human

Delain offers her a wide grin.

”Not at all, lady,” he answers.

”Firstly – my mother alone is more worried on such matters – but, I should guess – that is only because any mother would worry that her son marries the “right sort” – no matter what station the woman is… but, I do not think she would be overly worried about title or station, so long as the woman is able to show she can be a good daughter to her.”

”For my father? In these matters he and I are of like mind – my grand-father was killed when I was young – and my father assumed the Dukedom early – and spent his younger years seeking the barbarian warlords who slew my grandfather. As such – he was forced to travel long abroad – perhaps driven by more then a need for protecting our people – and spent much time in foreign lands, hunting the barbarian warlords and chiefs – and slaying any who harried our folk.”

Delain pauses, with a frown.

”In those times my father was a grim man – driven by a need to avenge his father – and did… hard things of dark nature – but he reformed his ways later in his life – changing his heart after he had began to kill even merchants who did business with the Warlords, buying northern folk for slaves – and selling them south; though in truth - our family still pursues slavers - and will not tolerate them within our borders, nor shall we suffer them to live, if they have taken our folk in a raid, and we will pursue them long into the field to reclaim those who may have been taken.”

”In these times my father made many enemies with the court – for he hunted slavers, he hunted wealthy foreign chiefs – who’s claim to power was held with bribes to nobles.”

”As such – my father spent long time away from the courts, and he hunted evil sorts - many times they were warlords who spent much to bribe our own nobles. By killing these warlords - many of our nobles lost quite a large sum of coin. As such – being that he was on these missions for long periods of time - he has neither well-acquainted with the wiles of court – and what he knows of our own nobility, he despises for their hypocrisy and dishonest ways – in short? Provided you are able to do well for yourself and can help our family – supporting it the best way you can – in short; I would think he would be happier if you were not a noble, at least – in his private heart – for he despises the hypocrisy he has seen from folk like them.”

”For myself? I do not care in either case – I admit I must be forced to look to the security of my house – but can you wonder on that? For my house is not simply my mother and father – but my entire people. If my family dies – then the soldiers are not paid – and without them the land is undefended. If not an enemy army - then it is just as likely that another noble lord – as it were – will seek to annex the land of my father – and when this occurs – who knows what shall happen with my father’s people if another less generous lord appears?”

”So you see – I cannot worry about only myself – for that is selfish – even my parents, and siblings if I had any – this would be only slightly better – but, I must look to my entire people – the soldiers who guard the land – the temples that need patronage and maintenance – the businesses that need to have infrastructure to transport goods – and the safety and the lives of all the citizens that reside there. For I trust my father and mother’s generosity to the people – as well as my own desires and heart – but if we are lost – what will happen to them we are sworn to protect? They will be consumed by the strongest lord that seeks to take the land – and, if another lord takes the land – what will become of the people of my father’s House?” he asks you.

”Still – in this matter, you have title, power – and the means to advantage my father’s people – but I do not wish you to think those thoughts are on the forefront of my mind – for they are not. Rather – my heart is more moved by the setting sun, and how it brings a kiss of fire to your golden hair – or the color of your eyes turning violet in the same reddish hue behind you. To me – this image of your loveliness is far more magical to me then talk of wealth or power – and I am content to have spent this time with you, no matter what may come – for the image shall ever be with me,” he adds gently.

Psst. On Delain's character questionnaire it says he has a sister. ;)

His rare poetic description of her visage against the setting sun caught at her heart and gripped it with such yearning.

After hearing all about his family, history and general welfare of his people, she utters in a reverent tone, "You will be a very fine leader once you are head of House Esserian, that I am sure. The welfare of your people is in capable hands." Turning to face the sinking sun and knowing it was time to return to the Keep and her companions, she closes her eyes letting the world slow for a mere minute, then taking a deep breath she turns around to Delain and walks the few steps until she is once again only a hair's-breadth distance from his body. "Forgive me, but if this is the last time we may ever see each other, then I do not want to miss out on this", and with that she brings herself up on her toes, wraps her arms about his neck drawing his head down and plants a kiss on him which spoke more than any words she had uttered to him this day. She filled that one precious kiss with the entirety of her feelings, not daring to think what it would mean or if the lord would be angered by the presumption. She kissed him until she ached yet still pulled apart from him then, knowing time was not on their side. Breathless and somewhat lightheaded, she leans back slightly and gives him a shy, heartfelt smile. "I must go now for my companions wait for me at the Keep for the journey south. I wish you and your men safe travels back to Western Brevoy. And Lord Esserian, if you can, come back to me."

As Ariarh rides off she can hear no words - knowing only she left the Duke's son speechless at her boldness.

Even so, as she gallops to the fortress, she pauses to turn her gaze to see him - and watches him in the sunlight - his eyes full on her, his hand shading his face from the last rays of the setting sun.

He raises his hand to her, in both a salute, and a gesture that is at once tender and possessive - and she smiles inside, knowing that her action has kindled in him a desire to return more deeply then mere politics.

Um - yeah - his sister? I knew about that all along... so did he - but, um - he was so bewitched by your beauty he completely forgot...

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

She burned the memory of him against the setting sun in case this was their last encounter. A pang of sadness and pain hit deep within her chest but she stayed it. There was no time for that kind of melancholy. This is a good memory and I shall keep it thus, always. She lifted her own hand in farewell, mimicking his gesture and joining them in an unvoiced promise. This day she undertook the first step with the nobleman. The next time they would meet, it would be his turn.

For age purposes - the following is correct - only at half; like a half-elf would be; so - for aging effects, that is how Arasmes would age - I'm currently looking for Aasimars next - but, in the meantime - the rule of thumb is find the standard age for both parents - add them together and divide by two. That's how I'm doing it - I'll find you next for aging....

Kyton age.

All you have to do is put things in the middle to find out what's up. Yay team good!

Also - remember; Kae has rustled up so low-level types to help things out - you've been talking to bosses. If you'd like to find some low-level types to eventually recruit for your barony - as he is trying to do - toss it up here, like he did - and we can begin the process of recruiting you some "peeps" to travel with - and work with you later. Like Galen - they'll have an initial stat modifier set up - and some levels - but you'll take it from there, if you like them and want them in your barony. Kae has some options - so too can Ry and Isani - the others could too - if they chose to query about them.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

I would like that -- and am interested in pursuing it socially. I will post something up later tonight. Thanks.

Ry will look at the golden kobolds and the ape men for starters. And possibly one of the female Yuan-ti. She may ask Anaitis for help with the latter. She does not trust the snake girl readily but believes she could give her advice none other can in her party at present.

Sounds good!

The earlier post you did before regarding how you wanted to proceed with their leaders/questioning is exactly what I'm looking for here...

You and Kae especially need this type of stuff - as you'll want to create "feelers" for councilfolk in your own baronies.

Remember, also - worst case scenario is that you can simply build "from scratch" entire council members, but this is somewhat complicated - as that is a lot of work.

Just let me know your preference, and also - who/what you intend to question, like before. Okay - look forward to seeing it soon...

Ah - finally - you and Kae should see something for baronies and self-government soon.

Gold Kobolds.

The ladies approach the golden kobold encampment once more and spying their leader, move to him, bowing before him.

"Honourable Soichi-noh-Nobu-noh-Satoru, I and the Priestess Isani are healers and we would be interested in meeting and speaking with any of your folk who have particular healing skill, herbalists, even clerics."

Isani adds in her thick accent, "Venerable leader, it would be a honour to sit and listen to your devout brothers and sisters. The great Lady Sarenrae will be pleased with such religious contemplations."

When their paths cross,

Ariarh politely gestures for Brett's female "shadow" to come to her.

"Anaitis, I seek introduction to a female Yuan-ti pureblood. Yet, I would approach someone you are familiar with and whom you trust and find trustworthy. I seek an acquaintance and depending on the female's skills, I may offer her a place by my side when the time comes. Who do you suggest I speak with?"

Diplomacy with Anaitis: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Isani, in her native tongue, speaks to Anaitis,

in Osiriani:
"Your delicacy in the matter would be prudent for I do not believe the Lady Ariarh would like all and sundry to know her plans this night. And I heed you, Anaitis nes-Ma'at, choose a candidate wisely and one that will not boldly attempt to cloud the Lady druid's mind with your caste's mischievous mind magics..."

The golden kobolds are only more then interested in “chatting” with you about lore, but the conversation is mostly dull, as they tend to go on and on, not really giving you much information of note. You are interested in healing – very good; let them talk healing axioms, and theories on the true nature of being healthy. However – when you persist in more direct questions – they eventually see you’re not going away any time soon, and take you to one specifically who is attuned to healing in a unique way, more akin to their culture. Right away you can tell she is not a priest, nor a cleric (in the traditional sense) – her name is Akiko-san – and she is nearly blind; and you believe her powers are somehow linked to that deformity – for they suggest that blindness enhances the senses somehow – and can be useful in healing, then, politely – they leave you with her.

After conversing you discover some interesting things about her – firstly; her name, like all the kobolds name (as you see it) is from the language of Tian Xi – her name strikes you as interesting, for “Akiko” means “Autumn Child” – and you sense in her a very tender person.

Akiko is of the same clan as all of them – you learn quickly that in their culture the Clan name comes first in a formal address, followed by the family name – and last, their own name. As such – it is enough to (once the person has formally been introduced with all titles) to be called by their name.

In your case you notice she attaches the suffix sama – which you discover to mean “lord” or “lady” – yet she insists on “san” – which merely means “honorable” – and you sense (in their case) means – essentially – “Mister” or “Misses”.

She is near blind – and you believe this is a part of a curse of her kind, for after quick conference – you suspect she is an “oracle” – but as golden kobolds already have “dark vision” – her eyesight is very limited, but instead of “dark vision” to aid her – she has “tremorsense”.

You discover she has nearly no combative abilities – and has also studied in the ways of lore and performance. Her healing is unusual to you in the extreme – she uses pressure and touch to aid in healing, and has studied many things; not only strange forms of massage and herbal remedies – but also especially history and lore. As you have been told that their culture’s history has largely been through oral tradition you suspect that may be why she feels so eager to learn your history, and the ways of other cutlures.

You also find that she is fairly open to talking – and believe this is largely due to the fact that she is young – and, being nearly blind – she has had less time to notice her race’s "superior qualities" in casual observation. She will happily discuss with you things – and you are almost getting the sense that you have been “fobbed off” on this poor, nearly blind female – simply because the others do not really wish to associate with her too much, though you notice this more from the elders, less from the younger ones.

She is very quiet, and very polite – but when you ask her questions about her skills – she becomes very eager and animated – and happy just to have someone listen. You are also pleased (presumably) that she gives you a strange history of her people and her unusual healing arts.

If you have any specific questions for her – toss them up, and we’ll go from there…

Diplomacy with Anaitis: 1d20+10

Isani, in her native tongue, speaks to Anaitis,

** spoiler omitted **

Isani's Diplomacy with Anaitis: 1d20+12

Anaitis looks at you with a wry smile.

”You wish to find a female to speak to, and not a male? I wonder at this method of inquiry – rather; I sense I know the desire for it. Naturally, though – you need not trouble yourself – none of our kind are foolish enough to attempt to seduce the leader of your company for personal goals – excepting of course if they believed they were threatened and having you as a lover would advantage them. Still – in this case, they are not so unwise, I should think… Even so; as you prefer a female – this can be arranged.”

”Our most apt choice – I may think – is a female called “Kemat” – but she may be engaged tonight already with your General; ironically because of the possibility of mating… Rest assured – she could smell the… how do you say… ah! She could smell his desire – she proceeds with that in mind – but they may mate; in which case – she will be indisposed for some time, as she is fairly adept at that skill.”

Anaitis considers a moment.

”Then, of course – you not seeking someone who is truly great in mind, rather – you seek someone who will not cloud your thought, I think… Also – you ask who would be best suited to you? There are several, I think… who would be bestest is difficult to say – for I do not know your purpose.”

She glances over the others, considering – there are only 4 female purebloods – she and Kemat being 2 – the other 2? You are informed that one is a minor priestess, her name is Su-Namun – and she is currently with the idol – doing some sort of prayer. The other is very skilled type of warrior – but not a “front line” fighter – her skills are to focus on being subtle, adept, the kind of person who comes with smiles, and leaves death behind – this last one, this warrior type – she is named “Sedge” – and is versed in poisons, stealth, and all matter of secret deliveries of death.

Given this – who would you prefer to speak to? She can readily introduce you to either Su-Namun or Sedge – but you believe that Anaitis feels that both ladies are not generally to your taste, based on their skill sets. However – she seems to think that, given the options – you’d probably prefer to talk to Sedge, as the warrior type is more likely to be direct and upfront with someone she acknowledges as “master” – which, clearly you are. She at least knows that both adhere to some sort of “honor code” – yet you don’t know how serious that is – as they have already betrayed their own masters.

Anaitis, who is very polite with Ariarh – turns her golden eyes from Ariarh to regard the Changeling, and her words – and Isani would notice that her usual warmth has drained from the eyes, replaced by both suspicion - and possibly something else... Her tongue flickers heavily, as if she is testing something…

In this – I shall Ariarh a knowledge Nature check…

She glances Isani over a moment – but Isani knows that she speaks now in “Ancient Osiriani”.

Ancient Osiriani:

”Lady – you are not my master – nor my liege lord. I took the hairfoot as my master – him I obey for honor. The Nephilihim? Her I obey out of practicality –and because it is the honorable thing to do – as she is kinfolk to who I hold to be divine.”

”You aid my master – you aid also the Nephilihim – be content in these things, and that is enough. But do not speak to me as if you are my master– for you are not. Also - do not suggest I am such a fool as to use sorcery on either my master – as only a person without honor would do that - or the Nephilihim – who can summon fire from heaven to wreak havoc on an entire city – for only a fool would do that. I am neither a fool – nor without honor – and to suggest otherwise is not a good thing, for at the least it offends my feelings, and my pride. And, having been so offended, it clouds my thinking, and prevents me from doing my best to offer help voluntarily – excepting by orders from my master directly. Even then, when one seeks to set themselves up as a person who would insult me, I do not find that encourages me to be as forthcoming with aid as I might have been; for my logic is clouded by emotions that are hurt and insulted, and that is not good. Do we understand each other, child of the seas?”

Isani – you suddenly guess she knows something of your heritage – how this is possible is a bit of a mystery here – but something makes you wonder; possibly her knowledge of the Aboleth culture… For you vaguely recall Arasmes and Shaezon inferring that the creature beneath the water may be one of those beings that spoke the Aboleth language. Even so – how she may know of your personal bloodline is beyond you… In any case - clearly she is not pleased by your insinuations when she has been nothing but (in her eyes) a wonderful help, and may set Ariarh up with a "punk" who's planning on using mind tricks on her. Meanwhile - as of now she is not being as polite to you as the others – but you suspect (now, at least) this is because you are not “top man” of the group, but rather, something about you makes her suspicious (never mind suggesting she's planning on doing something foolish or dishonorable to Airarh) – and you think the source of her suspicion may have to do with your bloodline. What this is – and how she knew of your bloodline – that you don’t know…

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Isani does not turn away from the contempt in the snake girl's eyes. Finally, the girl shows something of her true colours and it sets Isani firmly on the course of not allowing the creature near the Lady Ariarh again. The Holbyt councilman could have her and all her duplicity ... This one was not to be trusted.

in Ancient Osiriani:
"So, Anaitis nes-Ma'at you show your true nature and confirmed suspicions I have formed since our very first introduction. So be it. Keep your aid and I shall endeavour to guide and protect my Lady Ariarh as I know and in the manner I have been trained. I serve the Lady because it is right; she is not my Master and I am not her slave. The lady finds slavery abhorrent as do all who travel with her. You have spoken your mind and thus we shall leave you to your business. I will inform the Lady of all that has been spoken between us. She will know what is best thereafter. Go seek your Hairfoot and serve him well. You understand nothing, Anaitis nes-Ma'at. I was taught that pride comes before the fall. May the Light infuse your mind and heart with clarity and harmony. Tisbah ala kheir."

Isani gives no further look or time to the Yuan-ti female and begins translating all the words spoken in modern and ancient Osiriani. She does not embellish, just relates the interaction plainly and quickly, even warning the Lady druid against trusting Anaitis nes-Ma'at.

Ariarh reaches out a hand and gently grasps the Priestess' arm in a show of camaraderie and understanding. She turns to the Yuan-ti, Brett's new girl, and her Aasimar eyes are striking, sincere and a dark shade of blue. "My Priestess seeks to protect me, a task she has accepted of her own free will. The words spoken to you were of no insult for her nature is not so. Her manner of speech is direct, forthright. If you do not like it, you do not. But do not speak to her in the manner that you have. I am no creature's Master; Brett Rowan is not your Master, he is simply someone who aided in your release. My party is indebted to the Priestess for her service and her loyalty. I see I have made a mistake coming to you but I thought you were friendly enough earlier. If you will not aid us, then I shall seek my own answers. In regard to my General, I will discover his whereabouts and there will be no sating of desire between him and this Kemat. Good night, Anaitis." Ariarh's words are not rude or angry. Still, they hold an edge, a leader-like directness meant to show that the Yuan-ti female was certainly out of line and reaching too far above herself -- free female or not.

"Isani, at some point this night we should return to the Yuan-ti camp and speak to Sshet, the warrior leader. He seemed willing to speak with us before."

"In the northern lands, healers are in short supply. The capital is being established and I would find and share information and skill with others dedicated to saving lives. Easy enough - snakes "smell" with the use of their tongue...

Could this flickering of the tongue be used to get a "scent" - and with it the smell of something? Smelling pheremones, musk, fear sweat - that sort of thing... it could be, but then again... you're not sure.

"Isani, at some point this night we should return to the Yuan-ti camp and speak to Sshet, the warrior leader. He seemed willing to speak with us before."

”A moment, lady,” Anaitis says tensely, her eyes following Isani as the dark-haired girl turns away from her.

”I will not have you go with this bad blood between us,” she adds, politely, bowing low before you as a servant would to a master...

”I have no quarrel with you – and I do not fully understand your purpose. I have taken the Hairfoot as my sahib – for that is a matter of honor; and it is just, and right. My decision to do so means I must protect him from danger, even if he is dangerous to himself.”

”Further – we are newly met – and have only traveled with each other for a day – I have not done anything cruel or ill-mannered to you, and have shown you nothing but respect.”

”But this one? She is rude – she is insulting. You say you would not have slaves – that is illogical, but it is your will. Even so – she defies it – for she seeks to force her will on mine, and orders me to do something, or not do something – as a slave. I choose the Hairfoot as my sahib – I chose this – I was not told to do so or suffer. Yet she comes to me – she says “you will do this and this” – very well; if that is the way of things – I will obey; for she has the mastery, and she knows it. But she does not need to be insulting – she does not need to be rude. She does not need to say “do this – or else” – and she implies I used sorcery to manipulate my… would you say “lord” – if not master? Either way – she says this – when it is not so! I did not use magic – I merely convinced with logic.”

”But she insults me – she says either I must have no honor to force my will with sorcery – or I am a fool who attempts to seek dominion over those who are more powerful then I am. Being called a person without honor, or a fool – this is rudeness. I did not say rude things to her – I could have said much – but it would be wrong.”

”I do not wish bad blood with you – your are not only wise – but of the Nephilim – I would help you as well – for you have my allegiance for saving my life. But if she wishes to be rude, it is not nice to be near her. She had no reason to say such things to me, no reason to insult me – unless she doubts me so soon after meeting me. And why would she? She does not yet know me - and if she suspected me as a threat then she should have killed me sooner, rather then let me live only to shame me with such words – yet if she does not doubt me – then she need not be so rude!”

”Even so, lady – you have my alliegance – I still will aid you no matter what path you tread, and if you wish my help – you need only ask. I pray the gods bless you well, if you are not one of them – but be wary of the priestess – I smell on her the scent of the Nunet – when she ages, one day you must watch – she will feel the calling of Nu and Nunet – for you see? There is one aspect for each of her eyes – be careful child of the Sun – she is not as safe as she seems…” Anaitis adds, watching Isani with flinty eyes.

Ry – without making a Sense Motive check you at least can tell Anaitis is very annoyed with Isani – she seems genuinely insulted, and you have a suspicion that in her culture, if she really felt that angry or insulted, even if I wasn’t or on purpose – she would pursue a duel with Isani. The fact that she does not either says she’s afraid – or (more likely) – she’s actually trying to restrain herself. In either case – she is worried for you – and feels that in time you need to keep an eye on the southerner… There may be more to it then that, though… Clearly, she senses something, but what it is – you don’t know yet – though you could ask…

FYI - Sseht is not a female... and as for Kemat - if you really want to stop any... indulgences - you may want to track down Kae... He's been a bit more "friendly" with the Yuan-ti then you have been, it seems...

”Oh, Ry-sama – you do me too much honor,” the golden kobold says with a series of polite bows.

”I am – as you see – blind. This malformation is a curse of the gods, they say – but, I have been gifted by modest powers of healing – and so I am happy to help you in all ways I can. So my blindness is forgiven.”

”For the north? In truth – the northlands were a place of mystery, and horror – for they say in the northlands it is a place of perpetual ice and snow – they say that man-cubs sleep in small homes made of ice – these homes look like little caves on the plains; and there is no cha to drink and eating whale blubber is a delicacy – for it makes you very fat, and being fat keeps the cold from you. I should add – we do not like the cold too much… Ah! And they say that in the north because it is so cold that no one ever bathes and the stink of their wastes hurts your eyes to smell it!”

”But here it is not so – I see many things that are green, not snowy – though I can not see more then a few feet from me… I see that you have bright fire, and also – that you have many folk – not horrible creatures like the yeti – or the Frost Giants – or the great four-legged beasts with long noses and bone horns from their mouth who are covered with thick hairs all over.”

”Here you have strange food – and strange customs, and evil folk, but also good folk, too – I am so happy to learn of these things, because not all is evil, some is different, but good – and very nice. And also – I have things I would like to see, or hear – or taste! I like to learn, and I like to teach – I can do either, if you wish – for I know things that your lands don’t,” she adds happily, but with another polite bow.

”I love lore – and study it much – for it is much to me to learn, and I think I would like to share much of it with you, too – if you would wish it? What is your customs? What do you eat? What do you drink? What clothes do you like – for I see all of your folk wear heavy clothes for rain – are there much rains here? Ah – where are your bathhouses? What gods do you pray to? How do you fight? Do you like poetry, or instruments, or dance, or theater? I like all – for I think that beauty is very lovely – though I can see little theater when the actors move, but I at least hear voices when they speak or sing – and I have brought my clan much pride at winning a poetry competition last year before we were taken by the serpent devils – and I like to eat fish, not meat – because fish is easy – and my brother was a fisherman before he became wako with some ronnin for a season or two – and he brought me many fish, and sometimes shells – and – oh! Do you have much fish here? Our kind like meat better – but I have a taste for fishes now – and what of your meditation? Do you know the ways of the Six Fold Fence? Do you like to paint? Oh – what of your clothing? Are your clothes colored, too – do you sew many things? Or do you paint your houses? I like to paint things - I met a Samsaran who used to trade shells with me for paintings I would do for him on little scraps of paper – sometimes we would make the paper into little boats and float them on the streams to race – which was very fun, do you race for fun, too?” she asks excited to have someone to talk to.

”Oh – apologies Ry-sama – I talk so much – I do not mean to talk at length – but, even so – I will help you as I can. You need only speak, and I shall help. I promise – I want to know much and learn many things. Please share with me – and if you say so – I will do what I can to help!” she adds the last with another series of bows.

Yes - this girl is kind of a like a very enthusiastic 12 year old - but you sense she may be a bit older - perhaps 14 (If you assumed her human age) - but she is just so excited about everything that it keeps her positive - even considering the horrors she witnessed before. As things stand - she is just so eager to help, you have a hunch that anything you ask, she'll not only do it - but try to figure out why you want it done, and if she can do even more! That said - she did toss up a question or two for you - no doubt you'll have the answers soon ;)

There are important tasks that require my attention. If you seek apology and amends for a perceived insult, than I give it in the name of the Priestess for she is part of my company -- I am sorry your feelings were hurt. You are in my company, Anaitis, out of the goodness of my heart for none asked if it were agreeable; you simply joined us. I owe you no such consideration or inclusion for I do not know you and you have not proven your loyalty or your honour to me. It does not mean that you cannot in time prove either or both. But know this, the Priestess is good and I trust her and that should be enough for any in my company. I will not hear superstitious stories spread around of her due to her unusual eyes ... All can see they are mismatched and nothing good comes from circulating rumor and conjecture, in my experience. If I hear ill word of the Priestess about the camps in the course of our travels I will know from whence it originated and I shall be unhappy, Anaitis. Now let us be done with this. I need to find my General and then I will mingle among the new groups before I retire for the night. Religion checks -

You're pretty much spot on on your observations - but there is further element on things.

Supposedly changlings - as they age - will eventually feel a call from their mothers line - the call will encourage the changeling unto a quest, in which they eventually embrace their dark side, and become part of a coven, or resist it... This quest tends to be both dark and dangerous - not just for the individual - but for the allies.

This is likely not a surprise to you - however, on top of that is the belief that this prompting comes from the dual nature of darkness - she is afraid of the deep waters. When chaos rises from the deep, it comes from evil and darkness - both are in keeping with religious rituals - and the servants of the creatures of the deep.

This fear she has can be seen as good news and bad news - and here's why.

It's bad news because it means that what she is really afraid of are the creatures of the underwater that speak the language of the Aboleth - those creatures - and what they do - are linked heavily the faith of Azathoth - which you know enough about already.

It's GOOD news because though Anaitis is worried about that - more then fear is an overriding desire to deal with the concern - to fight it - to resist it - so much that if she even thinks that a creature may serve this dark desire, she wants to fight it. That means that she'll most likely want to help you fight the evil, and is not likely to side with it...

However, she listens to you and says nothing, then bows and says.

"You are liege lord to my Master - to hear is to obey. I will not disrespect you, nor your agents again. Apologies," she says, and though she is somewhat frustrated that you would take Isani's side - she is clearly sincere in the issue of her apology, and is not being sarcastic.

A look of extreme horror comes on Anaitis's face - she seemed content and accepting - until toward the end, her voice catches, and her words are barely heard.

"Speak not on the Black Stone - it is the artifact of the Nameless One..."

Odd... either you're way off in your own religious thoughts and ideas - or she totally thought the Shabaka Stone was something else entirely... Whatever it is, and what she clearly knows, or thinks she knows - is likely to be unrelated to anything of note. Even so - you have a hunch that a polite, and even potentially friendly conclusion to this arrangement will be - sadly - cut short by her basic misunderstanding regarding a mere stone. How odd that it could disturb her so much... No doubt this is due largely to the fact that she guessed the wrong thing. But I have no idea what that guess could be...

While a good roll on your part via diplomacy - there was something here that prompted this issue... Ry - you sense that Anaitis was actually on the verge of getting back on "Team Good" - this may not be a bad thing via your words - but it is certainly an issue worth noting because it is very important, and things haven't gone 'awry' - not yet, you still have a chance to salvage them, and you sense she wants to say more, but is actually afraid at this point - more so then the Chaotic Water element...

Note to GM: Isani heard her mother hag's call at the age of 14 (she is now 21) and did not pursue it, blocked it and the call ceased as per Changeling information in Pathfinder. It's in my backstory -- also Isani mentioned that to Anaitis when she asked Isani what she was on the boat. She told her -- I heard and refused my mother's call and I hear her no more. I don't know if you missed that bit of information but I am surprised that this coven angle is being pursued when it's happened and dealt with prior to Isani joining the party in Saravale.

She looks closely upon Anaitis and notices the fine lines of fear and distrust. The apology she believes was made in earnest and does not question it. However, there was some mending to be done now before she went off to search for her errant big brother.

Addressing the Priestess, "If you would kindly go ahead Isani, I require a moment with Anaitis. I shall not be long and you do not need to worry for all is well. Please", and she smiles comfortingly and reassuringly at the Priestess and at the Yuan-ti female.

Isani is unsure if it is wise to leave the Lady druid alone with the stranger, yet has been directed to give them a chance to speak alone. Isani bows, replying, "As you wish it, Lady Ariarh. I will wait by the fire there", pointing to a spot not too far from them.

She will wait vigilantly.

Akiko's enthusiasm was like a wild storm -- breathtaking and a little overwhelming. But she immediately liked her and would find time to answer her questions, making a start of it tonight.

"Akiko you certainly have many questions and I do not know if I can answer them all tonight but I shall try, aye?" squeezing the young oracle's hand gently in reassurance since Akiko could not see her smile.

"Our position to the north of here is not so far north, does not touch the very edge of the land, and thus we do not have perpetual ice and snow. Aye, in winter the snows fall but 'tis only for a season. Autumn brings most of the rain. The lands and territories we own are green and diverse -- from clifftops to open plains and forests. The weather changes with the seasons and the land takes on a new beauty with each equinox. We bathe, some more fastidious with their hygiene and appearance. There is a simple bathhouse in the village but I do not think it is anything akin to your own bathhouses. We have many lakes and rivers throughout our lands. Aye, we have fish and we also hunt elk, deer, boar and other herd animals. If your preference is for fish, we can attempt to catch them in our streams and rivers." Ariarh remembers the golden kobold female oracle mentioning that her brother was a fisherman and pauses in her answers to ask a question.

"Akiko, what is a wako?" Gan Mongarone had begun teaching her Tian Xi but left before completing the instruction.

Ariarh then continues answering the myriad of questions, hoping to leave some impression upon the Gold Kobold.

"The Republic of Praxis has been established as a region where diversity is accepted and appreciated. So, the community of Saravale, the capital, is varied and there is no singular custom or mode of fashion. I was raised on a ranch where my father bred and trained horses. I prefer practical, comfortable clothing. I have a good, woolen skirt and such for more formal functions but as a general rule, I prefer riding in pants than dresses or skirts. I favour the colours of the sky and nature and you will see me don attire in shades of blue or green. I can mend clothes well enough but I do not make my own. What is your favourite colour, Akiko?"

"The city's deity is the good Erastil, however in recent times a shrine has also been erected to Apsu, Anuk-su and the silver kobolds' chosen deity. I revere Gozrah for I am a druid and the dual god suits me best. The priestess of our party follows Sarenrae. As you can see, we revere good gods and we do not allow the worship of evil gods on our lands." Once more Ariarh pauses, allowing the kobold to digest the information as well as giving herself time to draw breath before continuing on.

"I do not know much about painting, never having pursued the past time. I spend quite a bit of time on the road and having time to simply paint is not really an option for me. Nor do I think I have the talent for it. I do like reading and enjoy poetry. I do not play an instrument but I like to dance. We have joyous gatherings now and again and we dance and make merry. There is no theatre as yet in Saravale, not in the formal sense. I hope once the township is established we can provide such entertainment for our people."

"I meditate upon the dawn each day. It is time spent in deep contemplation, gratitude for the gifts I am given and renewing spells. The world is quiet at dawn, and I can drink in the serenity like it is a healing elixir ... I enjoy the solace and communion very much. When do you like to pray and meditate?"

"There are warriors among my people, as well as scholars, wizards, healers and other. Each person has their own style of fighting and we come to the aid of comrades and allies. Loyalty and protection of land and creatures are important to me."

"You asked me if I race for fun? I do when I have time and it is on horseback for I love to ride. Do you enjoy riding, Akiko?"

Somewhat perplexed by the kobold oracle's reference to Six Fold Fence, she enquires, "What is a Six Fold Fence? I have not heard of such a thing before and I would understand better."

I have a good, woolen skirt and such for more formal functions but as a general rule, I prefer riding in...

Short answers from Akiko

1. Wako are a version of Asian-style corsairs, sometimes pirates or privateers. Generally coastal sailors, they often work for feudal lords, or for themselves. Sometimes they work for money – sometimes they work for honor – but they have experience in sailing, and fighting specifically on ships.

2. She understands your gods – and venerates them, though does not have them as patrons per se – but you guess, if she did – her patron would be Shelyn, and possibly Desna.

3. She also prays at sunrise – the dawn is a glorious thing, and she loves each day, for each morning is very beautiful to her, and she loves to honor it.

4. She is a little clumsy – riding on a horse is hard for her – because she can’t see very well… She likes to race little boats on the ponds or streams, because she can watch them ride around, but riding herself is very hard, because of her vision.

5. She apologizes – meaning to say the “Eight Fold Fence” Sorry – my bad here – this “fence” is a metaphor – the metaphor suggests that each individual must surround themselves with layers for mental protection – each layer is lowered around specific people. In other words – you show random people the first layer – you show neighbors and co-workers the second layer – you lower the next layer down to family – layers down for close family members, layers for lovers and possibly children – the final layer for only yourself to see, when you cannot let anyone see that layer of yourself – and so on.

It is a mediation to surround your inner being with layers to protect your mind from showing enemies who you really are, so they cannot use that information against you. But it’s also a strong meditation technique to harden your mind. Many samurai practice it – to focus the entire being internally so that you can dismiss pain, hunger, sickness, sorrow, agony – and so on – emptying out all of those distractions so that you are an empty vessel to be filled as you decide…

Sorry for the abbreviated notes – I have a lot to catch up on… More to come soon…

How many traits do the councilman of the baronies possess? I know it's a 25 buy in and the characters are level 3.

Plus, I want Akiko as a Councilman of my barony -- position Councilor.

Council Members have the exact same rules as Cohorts - but they start on level 1 with maximum starting gear - and any gear you can buy from "core rules".

If you elect Akiko - know that I have her stats ready - she is not level 1 but level 2, and her gear and stats are pre-selected. However - she is a higher level and will eagerly join you - it should be noted - however - that she is rather young. Essentially like a 14 year old Japanese School Girl - so even though she may be rather wise - in her own way - she is also a bit... inexperienced... Even though - she is excited to be part of "Team Ariarh"!

Okay, I'm confused. In your Barony Rules House Rules you stated, "You have a Council. Your Council Members have the standard 25 point buy and are on level 3 to start." I have been designing my Councilmen as level 3 because of this.

In your email re the barony you stated "Your staff is all level 1 with the same rules I gave you for your cohorts -- they have full starting gold for their class on level 1." I assumed staff meant people I hired within my barony ... excluding the Councilmen.

Please clarify the instructions.

Apologies - the Council should formally be on level 1 to start - however - your Council gains XP from building (see book rules on XP for construction).

I believe that - by the time you finish building for the year - may of your Council Members would have leveled - and likely they would be on level 3 by the end of it.

That was where the confusion is - sorry for any mistakes. Very sleepy - hardly any sleep - and feeling tired.

Akiko's data is coming soon.

Leave your guys at level 3 for now - but as they gain XP - they won't level until their total "xp" is equal to at least level 3 - then they gain XP as normal...

Okay - very sleepy - need to go. See you soon!

The only real caveat - There starting wealth is level 1 Max. If you want to buy them loot later - you can, but it has to come of your personal "earnings" for the town. And remember - any time you want - one of these Council Members can travel with you as an "Alt Cohort" - but you can only travel with one Cohort at a time... Okay - need to go - very sleepy...

Okay, I developed level 1 characters -- not completely done with my Council but I currently have a diplomat, spymaster, high priest, magister and councilor (Akiko). Also, have chosen a name for my barony.

Will keep working on it tomorrow and hopefully will have my Council roughly drafted. Sorry for the delay. May need to ask you a few questions re my barony if you have time tomorrow.

Off to work now - should be okay tonight.

More information regarding your council be coming as soon as i get home.

If we claim hexes as part of our barony, are we required to pay the 1 bp/hex to the capital?

Technically - no. More on that to come - I'll be sending an email shortly - meanwhile - we're all on Skype if you'd like to say hi :)
