Spent the last couple weeks hanging out with my kids before they left for college. lots of packing, getting things for the dorm rooms, prepping for that first day of college.
and, with my kids going to colleges 2-3 hours away from home, this also meant lots of drive times running between home and the college. and when i drive, if im not listening to podcasts about ancient rome, the radio is off and im letting my mind wander....
what went from a basic random thought "huh, ive never run a game where the players fought a red dragon" turned into a scribble fest of notes, and eventually, the foundation of a campaign.
so, to the important stuff...
starting level: 16th
setting: Forgotten Realms, 3.5 setting
ruleset: could be pathfinder 1e, or, cuz its been a while, actual dnd 3.5.
number of players: 4-6
the BBEG: Belagos, "the flying flame", "dragonsbane", "the flying calamity", "virgin consumer", "death incarnate", a towering titan of dragon flesh, the flying apocalypse so large that he requires not one but two distinct lairs.
and when i say Apocalypse, i do mean apocalypse.
The start of this story begins on a night where a heavy wind storm comes out from off the Trackless Sea. Belagos begins his attempt at destroying the lesser races by kicking off a firestorm that consumes the entirety of the Wealdath forest. 33,000,000 acres of forest, destroyed in one night. Countless thousands of elves and humans and other creatures die due to his assault upon the land, his thirst for domination of the world.
are you willing to stop him?
this would be a campaign thatll take characters 16th level to level 20, and perhaps beyond.
what do i have so far for this game?
i have it broken into 3 chapters.
chapter 1, the calamity is unleashed. the characters are introduced to the depredations of Belagos and his dominated underlings, and understand the true threat to the realm he is
chapter 2: quest for the dragon orb. the players will adventure into the remains of the Wealdath forest, and gain access to the elven necropolis of Myth Rhynn, seeking the vault of long dead elven kings and princes, hoping to secure an Orb of Dragonkind, the only artifact capable of stopping The Flying Flame.
chapter 3: to stop the apocalypse. The party, having survived Myth Rhynn, and secured the Orb, journeys to the last lair of Belagos, bringing the fight to the Ruination of the Realms. There, the true strength of Belagos will be revealed.

Level 16, huh? If it’s pathfinder 1e I’m in. It sounds like the perfect campaign for an elf.
If possible, I’d use a prestige class that I’ve never seen used before. Sanguine Angel. Would be slayer (10) sanguine angel (6). With 20 being when the prestige class hits the capstone. The idea being that this elf is from the Wealdath forest.
Think Wyll from BG3. She is going to die. It is inevitable. Like with him a Devil shows up to make her a deal. For her, the flames are already consuming her when the devil appears, offering her a contract.
I think it would get across the desperation of the situation, and would allow for a class combo that really only works at such a high level.

Rizz I love your campaigns. I would definitely love to have a hero to face such a foe, be it,
Halfling Rogue?, Paladin? Maybe a Monk/Paladin? Or Swashbuckler/Paladin?
A Halfling, retired and restored to youth by the Goddess Yondolla to fulfill an ancient oath to the Elves of Wealdath.
That's my idea. A Halfling hero returns to avenge the unjust deaths of innocents by an Ancient evil.

Yeah I’ll brush up on a wizard character to make him an elf evoker. Are feats beyond the core rulebook allowed? If so I’ll take Opposition Research at level 9 so I only have one opposition school, enchantment.
EDIT: Just realized that Opposition School is not a feat but an arcane research. so are those allowed?

Interesting. Is it purely core, including spells and equipment? That does make building things easier. What about stat generation and starting wealth? Also, crafting feats and whether or not they can have been used to craft existing gear at half cost?
Looking at a Human Draconic Sorcerer descended from Belagos and looking to make amends for his depredations.

Well thatd be interesting, an all paladin and cleric group...
<desire to Stonelord Paladin intensifies>
A paladin from Clan Ghalmrin. Whose clanhold is in the Starspire Mountains. Which sits right by the Wealdath Forest. The dragon would he an existential threat. Given that the Clan is supposed to be miners and gem crafters, I’d probably give him a heavy pick to use. It feels right.
An all Paladin / Cleric group would be amazing. It would just need one person to have VMC Rogue for traps.
GM, what are the build rules going to be?

I'm interested. I have an old FR character I played in 3.5 (and 3.0 and 2e) I'd love to resurrect for this. She was a Sunite fighter-cleric and would probably translate well into a PF1e warpriest. I have a low level version of her here that I made for a campaign I didn't get into (the stats were rolled with a generous dice array); in my original playthroughs of her she got up to level 15 or 16 so it would be fun to bring her back in full glory.
This said she was never a fully optimized build--capable and a great party support character, but built toward concept and story more than sheer power. (The idea is she is an armorer who believes on making armor as beautiful as it is protective; she's here to fight and protect people and make cool stuff, not be up to flighty flirty shenanigans.) So my question is, given the focus on "gear up for massive boss fight," is that the wrong type of character to bring to the table?

So many nice shiny targets for the dragon's fire to burn.
With the heroic classes taken, I'm going to submit a rogue. Somebody with a common thought in his head, and someone to tackle those massive draconic locks on titanic treasure chests. I might have him muticlass in cleric for access to the Luck Domain.
I shall get to work.
