Jade Regent

Game Master EltonJ

This campaign is designed to take player characters from level one to level 15. The adventure begins in Sandpoint but starts with a mystery of the past. Can the player characters discover the secret and eventually travel to another continent?

It looks like I'm not getting any traction for my Legend of the Five Rings AP. But I bought part 1 of the Jade Regent AP (the Brinewall Legacy) and I'll be reading it.

Things to consider:

The Pathfinder Samurai Class sucks sparrow eggs and howls at the moon. If you want to play a Samurai, bite the bullet and download a copy of Oriental Adventures 3e and convert the d20 version of the class to Pathfinder and play that. Of course, if you insist on creating a Samurai from Ultimate Combat, I won't stop you. Just remember:
-- In Japan during the Sengoku period, there was THOUSANDS of schools of Kenjutsu. Don't believe me? Download a copy of Sengoku from Drivethru and read it.

-- The Pathfinder version of the Samurai class is a one trick pony. It represents one school of Kenjutsu. Is it the only school of Kenjutsu in the Dragon Empires? No, it is not.

The Pathfinder Ninja class is okay, but you'll find that the ninja class in ROKUGAN d20 works better.

There is no Shugenja class for Pathfinder. But we will still be using the cleric class for this.

Other than that, go ape. I would like to run the Jade Regent AP. Just remember, I am trying to grow into a storyteller, so you might have a lot more freedom in my version of JR than you're used to.

i played JR a few years ago, but im willing to throw my hat in here to try a different direction :)

Interested, and willing to adapt it as much as possible to approach to the "Rokugan" feeling :) shamans, sorcerers, and even kineticists, could likely work as shugenja as well, I guess.

Finally a Jade Regent to play!

I am DEFINITELY interested. I will probably go with a Pathfinder Class as by now I'm more used to them and they work with my hero lab.

Question, do you prefer Chained or Unchained classes, or just okay with whichever?

The Unchained Summoner is interesting, but I don't like it. The other Unchained classes are okay.

Liberty's Edge

OK...lets hope we get traction on this one...lol Count me interested!!

It is *really* rare to see Jade Regent. I'd gladly put together an unchained monk, a kineticst or an elementalist shifter for this. Leaning heavily towards elementalist shifter. While it is usually considered a weak archetype, I think that it would fit the AP really well.

I'll be looking at a winter witch class going into winter witch PrC :P

Or

Nine tailed heir Kitsune sorcerer

Okay, well, this is Jade Regent, so if you are interested just give me a holler here or in PMs.

I'll set up an official recruitment after I have about 30 replies. Including this one!

Liberty's Edge

I have a witch and a ninja that were built for this adventure path that never got far...I will most likely play one of them

I've tried to play a ninja in this AP before. Never went very far, but I'm open to trying again.

Well you already have 6 people interested. Why not just choose us and we can get started making characters? ;)

Good to know, and appreciate the fast response.

I hope we can manage the thirty but I am definitely interested.

Go ape in making your characters. You may use:

* The Pathfinder Core Rulebook.
* Advanced Player's Guide
* Ultimate Combat
* Ultimate Magic
* Inner Sea Magic
* The Inner Sea World Guide
* The Dragon Empires Gazetteer
* Ultimate Wilderness
* Occult Adventures (just remember, I'm only allowing the Kineticist class)
* Ultimate Intrigue
* Advanced Class Guide

Abilities:
25 point buy

Working on it as we speak! I assume 2 traits, one from the campaign. Are we using elephant in the room?

I'll build both my concepts

Grand Lodge

paladin of Shelyn would be fun

Lapyd wrote:

Nope, no elephant in the room. No on the room is square.

Awesome. :)

Making up an elementalist shifter (ultimate wilderness)

Liberty's Edge

Sorry to ask, but what is everyone making? I do not want to copy something someone else is making!! There are plenty of fun characters to play, so I just want to make sure I am not stepping on anyone elses toes..lol

i plan to play one of two :

Kitsune Nine Tailed Heir

or

Winter Witch

I'm thinking of a Elf Conjurer (teleportation) Wizard with the Younger Sibling (shalelu) trait.

One thing that may be a bit concerning is that our adventure starts in Varisia. While we could hypothetically say that the whole party (or most of it) is "asian themed" because of some "cosmic destiny" that coincidentally got us aligned, if any character is already some sort of Tian Xia samurai on a mission, a Minkai noble, someone that knows about the Jade Regent, or that came to Varisia to seek the Kaijitsu will like feel too much "foretelling" or connected to the "future" of the adventure, unless Elton changes a lot of the first books of the AP. Ameiko's heritage should be a surprise. With that said, Varisia does have a certain population from Tian Xia, so as long as we go creative, we could take some liberties to explain the party as is.

Kitsune:

Akemi
Kitsune sorcerer (nine-tailed heir) 1 (Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of the Beast 13, Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 4 175)
CG Medium humanoid (kitsune, shapechanger)
Init +3; Senses low-light vision; Perception +1
--------------------
Defense
--------------------
AC 13, touch 13, flat-footed 10 (+3 Dex)
hp 8 (1d6+2)
Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +3
--------------------
Offense
--------------------
Speed 30 ft.
Melee bite -1 (1d4-1)
Spell-Like Abilities (CL 1st; concentration +5)
. . 3/day—dancing lights
. . 2/day—disguise self
Bloodline Spell-Like Abilities (CL 1st; concentration +5)
. . 7/day—laughing touch
Sorcerer (Nine-Tailed Heir) Spells Known (CL 1st; concentration +5)
. . 1st (4/day)—charm person (DC 15), mage armor
. . 0 (at will)—acid splash, detect magic, mage hand, prestidigitation
. . Bloodline Fey
--------------------
Statistics
--------------------
Str 9, Dex 16, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 18
Base Atk +0; CMB -1; CMD 12
Feats Eschew Materials, Fox Shape, Magical Tail[ARG]
Traits childhood crush, domineering
Skills Appraise +5, Bluff +8, Craft (poison) +5, Knowledge (arcana) +5, Spellcraft +5
Languages Common, Senzar, Tien
SQ bloodline arcana (+2 DC for compulsion spells), change shape, dragon empire native, gregarious[ARG]
Other Gear 120 gp
--------------------
Special Abilities
--------------------
Bloodline Arcana: Fey (Ex) +2 to save DCs from spells of the Compulsion subschool.
Change Shape (Su) Assume a single human form.
Dragon Empire Native You come from the Dragon Empires in Golarion, and so your starting languages are Tien and Senzar instead of Common and Sylvan.
Eschew Materials Cast spells without materials, if component cost is 1 gp or less.
Fox Shape You can take the form of a specific fox, as beast shape II.
Gregarious (Ex) Successful Diplomacy check causes target to take a –2 penalty vs. further CHA skills for 24 hr.
Laughing Touch (7/day) (Sp) As a standard action, if melee touch hits, foe can take only move actions for 1 rd.
Low-Light Vision See twice as far as a human in dim light, distinguishing color and detail.

So taking childhood crush (Ameiko), i dont think she would have arrived with the rest, so a local who has been at sandpoint for sometime with her family

This is actually a really good point.

"When a trove of fireworks falls into the hands of the goblins of Brinestump Marsh, the people of Sandpoint fear an explosive invasion. But there's more afoot in the soggy wilderness than goblin hijinks and dangerous pyrotechnics. An investigation reveals mysteries and menaces aplenty, but also a treasure holding the answer to not just one of Varisia's greatest mysteries, but a conspiracy spanning continents and empires. Can the adventurers piece together a puzzle that links the owner of a sleepy village tavern to the unsolved destruction of a fortress-settlement? And can they withstand the ancient forces and secret destiny that have waited for them for decades?"

Completely rethinking my character. Will make one soon.

I'm not changing anything having to do with this AP.

Are Background Skills being used? Starting gold?

Alright. Grumbaki posting with this alias instead. Here is my plan. And I really thank Lapyd for pointing out where we start.

Race: Oni Spawn Tiefling (Oni has an eastern hint to them)
Class: Elementalist Shifter Lvls 1-4. (Leave the class right when a second element would be gained. Keeping the fire theme). Urban Barbarian lvl 5. Then Furious Guardian Prestige Class thereafter.

I've never played Jade Regent before. But I think that it would fit the campaign well. Plus...I've never tried the prestige class before, and this is a great opportunity to do so.

(Crunch + background in profile) Took the Student Survivalist trait.

Considering playing a younger sibling of Ameiko, and possibly a samurai of sorts - even if just in "flavor" and not officially a samurai and the character was raised in Varisia. Still debating if I'd use the Paizo official, or try to adapt the Oriental Adventures 3e one (honestly, I prefer the Paizo one, even if it sucks). Hopefully as the adventure progresses the character can actually become a more "fully fledged" samurai :)

Was thinking of submitting this character for the game. What do you think??

If she is in, as well as Akemi, they could also be good friends

Lapyd here with my character for the game - Yuna is Ameiko's younger sister, waitress at the inn, and a "samurai in spirit", raised in Sandpoint. Excited for the game! :)

Aelbourne Andosana wrote:

Starting gold is at level 1. Background skills are being used.

* Pre-Game Profession: Hunter

Yuna Kaijitsu
* Race: Human
* Class: Warrior Poet Samurai
* Campaign Trait: Younger Sibling
* NPC Connection: Ameiko (Sister)
* Pre-Game Profession: Waitress

Akemi
* Race: Kitsune
* Class: Nine Tailed Heir Sorcerer
* Campaign Trait: Childhood Crush
* NPC Connection: Ameiko

Setomi

And...
Dante Allesverloren: "I'm thinking of a Elf Conjurer (teleportation) Wizard with the Younger Sibling (shalelu) trait"

Pretty solid party. One thing we are missing is someone to handle traps…and healing

Anyone can handle traps. But yes, you can have somebody disarm them with the right skill.

I’m willing to vmc rogue if Elton is open to it. I’d have to rearrange skills and would lose some feats, but it’s not a bad angle for my character and would give us trapfinding by level 3.

I might think of unchained rogue with vmc bard

I'd been thinking of a Wayang ninja, but I think it's a fair point that here's no reason we should all have eastern-themed characters. Might do something else.

I talked to Elton, and updated Yuna to have VMC Rogue. Rearranged the skills around, so she can help more in this area now, and in some levels she'll be a competent trapfinder to deal with the magic traps.

KoolKobold wrote:

considering lapyd’s character, I’m gonna reroute to a human swashbuckler

Looks like all we might need a is a healer so I'm working on a Cleric of Desna, a Tengu who was adopted by Koya and has that background. She found him as either an abandoned chick or egg.

Grand Lodge

an Unchained rogue you say....Challenge accepted.

I have this Rogue I can adjust

Okay, here is Vrek Mvashti, Tengu by birth, son of Koya Mvashti by adoption, cleric of Desna like his mother. While he doesn't know the journey that awaits them yet, you can bet when he sees a chance to give his mother the great journey of her dreams, he's going to knock himself out making it happen.

Background/History:

Vrek Mvashti, son of Koya is adopted. This is the least well kept secret in Sandpoint, as Koya Mvashti is an elderly human woman of Varisian descent, where as Vrek is a Tengu of unknown heritage and parentage. She has wrinkles, he has feathers.

Yet, more than once, if folks express startlement that HE is not a human yet claims as a mother is one, he often feigns melodramatic surprise, "Whaaat? why didn't anyone TELL me about this until now?"
He barely remembers his earliest years; he was just out of his egg when Koya found him, abandoned by a roadside, half starved and easy prey for any beast that might come along. Koya took him into his care and when no sign of any relations (Not like Tengu were common in the area) could be found, she took him under her figurative wing. She grew to love the little chick and as he had no name she knew of, called him Vrek.
Vrek did not have it easy, often facing prejudices for being strange and weird among those who didn't know of Tengu, and being called a 'natural born thief' among those that had heard of them. But his new family , Koya and later Sandru, looked after him as they traveled along Varisia. It must be said that Ameiko and a few others of Tien ancestry and Sandpoint were kind enough to at least introduce him to some of their culture (Not that Ameiko was a traditional sort) thus Vrek learned a language or two from the lands from Tengu homelands even if he never saw it.

Koya never pressed for him to join the priesthood, rather her gentle example taught him much about Desna, and Vrek's worship was born of earnest appreciation and later love of the Goddess. It cannot be denied that when Vrek declared his calling was also a cleric of Desna, his mother "Puffed up as proud as a peacock for a week" (according to one local).

Vrek knows his mother is growing eager to travel further than ever since her own mother Niska died, and while Sandru might roll his eyes gently, Vrek is all for it for he knows his mother's eagerness masks regret and melancholy. Indeed, he wonders a bit guiltily if raising him held her back from those far travels she now dreams of. If so, he's going to try to find a way to make it happen to show his love for a mother who has always been there for him.

Looks good, Ridge, from a cursory look.

Wis 18 -- Okay, you have good intelligence and a great wisdom, that's good.

Quote:
Skills Acrobatics +1 (+5 to jump), Diplomacy +6, Heal +8, Knowledge (geography) +7, Knowledge (religion) +5, Linguistics +9, Perception +6, Sense Motive +8, Stealth +3

It would help if you show me your work, so I can make some calculations. :)

But you're quite the linguist.

Thank you. Tengu get a a +2 to Wisdom so with your generous 25 points, I managed to get that without trouble.

I admit, I'm using hero lab, so it is doing most of the work.

Acrobatics : +2 Dex Mod, -1 Armor Worn for Total of +1
Diplomacy: +1 Rank, +3 Class Skill +2 CHA bonus for a total of +6
Heal: +1 Rank, +3 Class Skill, +4 Wisdom Bonus for a total of +8
Knowledge (geography): +1 Rank, +3 Class skill (made so because of Foster Child Trait) and +2 for that SAME trait, and +1 INT Bonus for a total of +7
Knowledge (religion): +1 Rank, +3 Class Skill, +1 INT Mod for a total of +5
Linguistics: +1 Rank, +3 Class Skill, +4 Racial Modifer for being a Tengu*, +1 for INT for TOTAL Of +9
Perception: +2 Racial Mod, +4 for WIS mod for a total of +6
Sense Motive: +1 Rank, +3 Class Skill, +4 WIS mod for a total of +8
Stealth: +2 Racial Bonus for being a Tengu, +2 Dex Mod, -1 Armor Worn for Total of +3

* Footnote: The Gifted Linquist Racial Ability of Tengu not only gives them a +4 bonus, it also gives them TWO languages for every one with every skill point they invest instead of the usual one. Hence Tengu pick up languages easily which is a nice perk :)

Btw - not to influence anyone, but the Pei Zin Practitioner archetype for Oracle is awesome on the healing space, and greatly thematic for this game. :)
