Allowed to build an Exemplar?

Pathfinder Society

There is a note on the Exemplar page at aonprd stating that PFS agents have access to the Exemplar class. Does that note override any requirements to own Source Material or to purchase a boon?

No. You still need to own the source material, either in book form or the PDF.

Thanks. Then that makes me confused about what's the point of the note on the aonprd page

Because Exemplar is Rare. Things that are Uncommon or Rare require Access. That note is saying that everyone has Access, instead of it needing to be tied to a boon or something.

Like Aristophanes says, Access overrides rarity, not ownership requirements. For another example Dwarven Weapon Familiarity grants access to uncommon weapons, like the Dwarven Waraxe and Dwarven Dorn-Dergar. Being in Player Core 1, the Dwarven Waraxe is part of the Core Assumption and anyone with this feat purchase it in PFS. But the Dwarven Dorn-Dergar is from Treasure Vault, so while the feat gives you access to it, you still need a copy of the book to purchase it.

So why does aonprd not override any requirement to 'own the source material'?

From https://paizo.com/pathfindersociety/characteroptions

''To use an option from any source other than those discussed above in Pathfinder Society play, you must bring any one of the following to your game table:

-A physical copy of the book you wish to use
-A name-watermarked PDF copy of the book
-Name-watermarked printouts of all relevant pages you wish to use from the PDF
-ACCESS TO THE RULES YOU WISH TO USE IN THE FORM OF EITHER ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO THE PATHFINDER REFERENCE DOCUMENT (PAIZO.COM/PRD), another official rules source such as Pathfinder Nexus, or a photocopy of the relevant pages, along with proof of purchase, such as a receipt from a game store or a screenshot of your My Downloads page on paizo.com.''

My all CAPS. paizo.com/prd redirects to aonprd

Archives of Nethys can serve as a copy of the rules for reference if you bring evidence of a proof of purchase but don't have the actual PDFs/physical books with you. I've bolded the relevant part of the sentence inyour quote.

Squark, I submit that the phase you highlighted applies specifically to 'a photocopy of relevant pages'

It does not. There would need to be no comma after "pages" for your interpretation.

If that were the case, it would be its own item in that list of options.

Turn the question around. "If archives of Nethys overrode the ownership requirement, and AoN is freely available to everyone, why would the ownership requirement exist?"

You are free to use any material you want in home games. But if you want to participate in the official organized play program that paizo spends additional money producing content for to promote the game, it's not unreasonable for them to ask you to purchase some of their products if you want to use more than the fairly generous resources in the Core Assumption.

I believe SFS and PFS scenarii are not available for free though.

x x 342,
It's to show love to the company that created the content you want to use. Unprecedented by any other prg publisher I know of, btw, to post the rules for free online and then essentially dare you to support them financially.

Maybe think of it as this: AON allows you to "window shop" before you settle on what you want to play for PFS.

=)

As I understand it, they're still a loss leader. There are also rules in place for GMs to borrow scenarios from organizers if they are not in the financial position to purchase them.

I've moved this conversation to Organized Play so appropriate parties can see it!

There are a couple of steps you need to check for before your character can use an option:

Firstly, ownership. The option you want, either needs to be from a core source, or you need to own the source. The Core Sources currently are: the Pathfinder Player Core, Pathfinder GM Core, Pathfinder Monster Core, Pathfinder Player Core 2, Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Pathfinder Bestiary, and Lost Omens World Guide). Ownership of a different source is met with, as you listed: An actual book, a PDF you bought from paizo, a printout of the relevant pages from the PDF, OR, as the last CAPS part says: Access to the rules combined with proof that you've bought the relevant source.

Secondly, the option you want to use, needs to be something your character can Access. Just because you bought the Book of Dead, doesn't mean you can make a Lich, as that's not appropriate for the campaign. Nearly all Common options are available, but some may have been deemed limited or restricted by the organized play. Some things have been given free access for all pathfinders, like exemplars, gunslingers, kobolds, poppets, etc. Some things you can access by making a specific choice with your character, like being from Tian Xia gives access to a lot of tian xia weapons, or picking Dwarven Weapon Familiarity gives you access to uncommon dwarven weapons.

Thirdly, your character needs to be able to meet the requirements of the option. It's not enough that you bought battlecry (ownership) and that you chose broken lands as your home region (access), your wizard can not become an aldori duelist if they don't also meet the requirement of being trained in martial weapons.

All three of the conditions need to be met. ownership/coresource, access, and prerequisites.

I love this answer, Tomppa. It's the best explanation that I have seen for this concept.
