Over at examiner.com they have announced that production has started on a new “definitive documentary on Dungeons & Dragons.”
The writer, Michael Tresca, (who also seems to be involved, along with Anthony Savini and producing partner Andrew Pascal) says that
Dungeons & Dragons: A Documentary will be a definitive look at the game Dungeons & Dragons, its history, appeal and effect. A game like no other, with influences far-reaching and subtle. A feature length film, shot on HD video. This will be released in 2013, to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the release of Dungeons & Dragons.
It looks like they are seeking people who might be interested, or have some valuable stories or material to provide, and they have a Facebook page where you can follow developments.

I really, REALLY, want to be postive about something like this.
Definitely, I'm interested in the idea of a documentary about D&D and it's formation, but I fail to see why I should be interested in what niche-notable pseudo-celebrities such as a guy that was involved with reddit or some guy that blogs for a newspaper website have to say about D&D.
This is my problem with many so-called documentaries - they seem to lack the ability to get interviews with people that are relevant to the subject matter, and instead, bloat the product with filler from fringe folk.
If these are the videos being used to market the film, what should I expect to see inside? Are there any interviews with folks actually directly involved with D&D during it's formative years (or, really, directly involved with D&D at all)?

There are plenty of cool, well know celebs that play or played D&D. It would be cool if they could interview some of them.
The D&D anniversary book that came out a few years ago (great book, by the way) has LOTS of interesting celebs from all types of media talking about D&D ... Stephen Colbert, Vin Deisel etc

I'll bet they hit their Kickstarter goal. Still 17k away, but with the help of RPG luminaries (like Lisa Stevens) pledging and pointing, they went from 50k to 133k in what seemed like a week.
I was interviewed for that documentary at Gen Con 2011 (be surprised if my lil bit makes it in), but these guys were making a solid attempt to do it and do it right. I helped set up a meeting between them and Gail Gygax. I'll bet they kept that interview.

This should prove to be an interesting film. I hope that they come at the game from several angles:
- history of how Gary and Dave came together to make it
- the game's mechanical development
- the player demographics over the years
- the fad popularity in the early 80s (including the cartoon series) combined with the hysteria about demons and devils in the game
- influences on celebrities
- impact on video games and gaming, film, comics and fiction in general
- interviews with various designers and developers from TSR/WotC
- key products and moments in the game's development, for example edition changes, major campaign lines and adventures
- competition with other products
- the RPG culture with interviews from various gamers
- the game and hobby's future
