Gargoyle naming conventions

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

What sort of names do Gargoyles have in Pathfinder? I'm playing a Strix who, flavorwise, is a Gargoyle.

Every gargoyle in all of Golarion is named "Aberforth".

Aren't most gargoyles named after NY city boroughs and streets?

But more seriously, and I'm realizing for almost the same reasons as in the show, I'd think gargoyles would adopt naming conventions of their region much like they shape themselves to the architecture. Not that they'd pick up common names, but that styles would vary throughout Golarion. And I don't think we have an ample data set to determine what's normal, so you're free to decide (for better or worse).

I think they'd prefer something ferocious, perhaps alluding to their toughness, battle ferocity, stony skin/claws/etc., much like a mean, prideful dog might name themself. And I would also suppose they name themself, like a coming of age after being worthy of joining the...flock? Since they speak Petran, I'd also lean into earthy themes, like a warrior Dwarf-miner might name their child w/ hopes of slaughter.

Hardclaw Stonewing.
Diamondtooth
Bloodreaper Skylord

ETA: I think it would depend a lot on whether your Strix named themself to emulate a gargoyle or was actually named by gargoyles, which might in turn depend on the PC's or their parents' ranking in the tribe.

Oread-blooded :) ?

Could you tell us what type of stone and bird your character look like?

The PF1 adventure path Iron Gods has three gargoyle NPCs, named Gruethur, Rayaldach and Ophelia.

Verdant Wheel

I met a Paravax amid my PFS adventuring

Well I'm following the lore of the actual monster. I'm not doing anything silly like that. I was also thinking he may have his original Gargoyle name given to him by his parents since I think Gargoyles in Pathfinder do reproduce the old fashioned way and thus have parents, and a new name when he became holy sanctified to show his separation from typical evil Gargoyles.

I've seen the names Ascalaphus mentioned, I've also seen a Grimstone as well.

Well he's a Strix on paper, I"m playing PFS and at least my local one doesn't care at all if you say "Yeah I'm a Gargoyle" as long as you don't expect any mechanical benefits that their real race doesn't give, basically they said Flavor is free.

So he's an Ashwing Garogyle. Obsidian, or dark looking stoney skin. Horns, tail, wings and demonic appearance. Zero bird like stuff.

Gargoyles don't have tribes. They have wings and those are rare. Gargoyles are pretty much ALL Petty, Vindictive, and Treacherous. They are usually solitary hunters and if they come together at all and it manages to hold together it's called a wing. From archieves of Neyths:

This discussion could get…rocky.

There's also a gargoyle in Kingmaker named Gedovius. So it seems like in Pathfinder it's a hodgepodge of European languages.

I cant see my Gargoyle who worships Sarenrae and was "redeemed" by roosting on a holy site having a name like that.

If you do, make sure he speaks with a French accent.
