Interest check: Epic level adventure!

Recruitment

I am *considering* running the epic level adventure Sentence of the Sinlord. If there is enough interest, I'll open a recruitment shortly, but I very likely won't be running the game till the new year.

Characters will be 20th level gestalt, mythic tier 1(don't worry, I've checked with the author, who I'm friends with on FB, and PCs will still be challenged). To keep things spicy and interesting, we'll probably be using the Legendary Games Legendary version of classes. Likely other 3pp material too.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc, though I won't be getting too much into character creation/rules here.

Dark Archive

I'd be interested.

In truth, I'd prefer fewer 3pp additions. I say this not because I don't trust them, since many 3pp material is great, but because it might make the game too absurdly complex.

As an example, the legendary classes you've mentioned are pretty straightforward, but then you also have Spheres of Power/Might and Path of War which are also good, but combining all of them on top of gestalt and Mythic? Might be just too much.

I’m always interested in high-level play. Not something you get a chance at much. I tend to agree with Sir Longears as regards 3PP.

Likewise also interested. I would also prefer not to have to deal with 3P material, if only because it makes life harder for character building.

What sort of character creation rules would you be using? Any particular house rules or any excluded materials?

I'd be interested in this as well. I've made a few high level characters I haven't gotten the chance to play. I too am not a huge fan of adding 3PP due to the added complexity. I find myself more and more these days just making my characters with as much core as possible. Especially if spells are involved.

I'm interested, and I could go either way for 3pp.

I'm always down to play a Level 20 gestalt game.

You know my tastes for games like these :D

Sounds like a rare opportunity to make a truly astounding character. Consider me interested!

Alrighty, we definitely have enough interest for me to create a proper recruitment thread!

A few questions first, however:

1) For those of you who are opposed to 3pp content, would you mind if I allowed it, even if you don't use any of it for your builds? I don't care if you use it or not, and I certainly won't hold it against you if you only use 1pp material, but I would like to allow it for those who also enjoy it.

2) Regardless of your answer to 1, would you be okay with using the Legendary versions of Classes? I find them to be a lot more fun(generally due to them providing more options), and I would like others to experience that as well.

3) Finally, I started reading over the adventure tonight. Only read the first several encounters, and I've already found ways to add more encounters or make the current ones even more challenging.

That said, would people prefer to either start a couple levels higher than 20, have more than 1 mythic tier, or just maybe possibly level up a few more times than perhaps the adventure calls for? Assuming you want these additional encounters and challenges, of course!

Also, I'll check with the author to make sure such additions won't mess up the later parts(though, I can obviously keep adding more! Lol).

1) I don't mind allowing 3pp, but I'd prefer to limit it to a single additional source, like Legendary Classes OR Spheres OR Path of War. Many of these systems interact with itself in interesting ways, but when you dilute the rules too much, many feel off imo.

2) I'm ok with Legendary Classes as long as you allow us to also use regular archetypes. As an example, the Legendary Fighter doesn't have the bravery class feature (I think it has determination instead), so technically this would rule out a big number of archetypes, giving us less options.

3) I'm not against a challenge, specially at epic levels, but I honestly believe lvl 20 gestalt+mythic characters will vary absurdly in terms of power depending on our builds. I advise you to keep to the initial build idea (lvl 20 gestalt + lvl1 mythic), then have a couple encounters to calibrate our power level and finally you decide if you want to make it more challenging and/or give us more stuff.

1) You know me, I'll want to play some monster class. :D Probably Spheres on top of it.

2) Fine with me.

3) Finishing play-by-post campaigns is already hard enough without making them longer. I'd rather play it as-written, maybe with adjustments to the difficulty of encounters if it feels like they're needed after the first couple, than add in some extra things and end up losing momentum and joining the vast graveyard of unfinished campaigns.

1) I like the idea of one 3pp to a customer. It's an interesting design challenge. It also allows people to have a chance to use non-3pp characters without being irrelevant. Somebody with standard rules against somebody with all 3pp to play with is not playing the same game at all. It's rather silly to consider this. but if people only have one source of 3pp then it's possible to be in the same ballpark.

2) My builder doesn't support legendary classes, but if only 1 3ppp to a customer, then I'm okay with that.

3) Let's stick with the current progression. With characters at this scale, every level means recalibrating a lot.

1) I’m not wholly opposed to 3pp or even, for example, reaching back to 3.5 products. But some of it is not super balanced. Path of War and some of the Spheres stuff especially tends to put 1pp martials to shame, which puts players not familiar with those systems at a disadvantage. That’s my main concern. I *am* down to play a monster class, as Almonihah says above (or even use the 1pp monster PCs rules, if you choose to allow that).

2) I’m not familiar enough with those classes to say.

3) I’m good with either. You don’t play high level not to be challenged, so more challenge is just more of what I’m here for, whether we start with it or get it after a few encounters.

While technically also 3pp, but Elephant in the Room is always great and very popular here. I think more games nowadays have these than not.

Ive no objections to others using it but I generally prefer to build using 1P, mostly because I have everything in herolab. I can probably amend using a different version as tend to transition to a google doc for complicated classes like these but I am unfamiliar with the variants.

Characters at these levels are absurdly variable in their power level as it is. I wouldnt see the need to add yet more complexity but I dont object to the idea of levelling up a bit during the game. I think that extra mythic levels rather than extra character levels are a good way of doing so in games like this. If you are considering over level 20 then I have a fondness for the variant epic rules even if they are completely busted.

As far as what is allowed it is your game you set the rules. My opinion is I'm not much for 3PP some classes work ok with 1pp but not all in my opinion. I was planing on submitting a monk/paladin/Champ of Irori build I've built a few times at high level but never got to play. If you want to use legendary classes that is your call. I will think of something if I want to play.

I have no qualms whatsoever with 3pp material or with Legendary Classes.

However, I would prefer NOT to be forced to use a Legendary class if I didn't wish to.

I know one of the characters I had previously built preferred the non-Legendary Barbarian to the Legendary one, cuz it seemed like a few things I needed for the build didn't fully translate over.

Granted, said build was a tristalt that DID end up using two other Legendary classes in it, so it's not like I'm opposed to using it. Just don't want to be forced to.

This is a good point. I generally build in HeroLab as well. I can kludge some other stuff in by hand, but it gets hard quick if there’s a lot of additional rules/classes/etc that I can’t use HeroLab for.

Monkeygod, you crazy muther! Of course I want to take this Epic Adventure with you at the helm!

Monkeygod, how do you feel about Automatic Bonus Progression? At 20, we’ll all be able to afford the standard suite of stat-boosting items, but just rolling that stuff in and letting us get fun and interesting cloaks/belts/headbands that do things besides +X to Y could be a fun alternative.

ABP is pretty interesting, but the rules are silent about companions (animal companions, familiars, eidolons, etc). If we go for this, a ruling would be needed to address this.

1) I am not opposed to 3pp, and am definitely interested in exploring some possible options.
2) your excitement for the Legendary Games classes has my interest peaked, but it seems like some/many of them are incomplete on d20pfsrd - is there a good place to get access to these classes?
3) I would advocate for starting at 20th level / 1 tier mythic, and allow more opportunities to level up / tier up during the adventure.

Ended up in a 5+ hour discord call with some gamer frendos, so not gonna be able to get to the recruitment tonight. I **might** be able to tomorrow, but my mom and I have a craft show on Sat for our candle business, so maybe not. Sat is likely out, as I have a couple of buddies crashing here(assuming their Nerf event isn't cancelled cuz of our bad weather).

Anyways, allow me to answer some of your questions:

I won't be getting into any character creation rules here, but suffice to say they'll be fairly decent. Nothing will likely be excluded, but I will be placing some limitations on what can be accomplished. Ie, number of spells/powers per round, no unlimited anything, etc.

Oh, actually, one thing will be banned: Leadership. Normally, I absolutely do not mind the feat, but I really don't want to have to deal with several extra characters, and idk how unbalanced(for or against them) things would be if cohorts accompanied the PCs.

Elephant in the Room, and ABP are both going to be in use. I will address companions in the recruitment.

Finally, links for various classes will be posted in the recruitment as well.

Let me know if there's anything I missed!

I love making high level characters. I’ll definitely be watching out for the actual recruitment. I usually only use paizo stuff but I had put together a Valkyrie-inspired character a while ago for a 3pp game that I think combined a spheres of might class and a path of war one… depending on the actual character creation rules I might try that again (though there’s also a good chance I’d just do something purely paizo).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Half the fun is creating the high-level character.
And then a few months go by and you check your Aliases and go, "What did I created that lvl 20 orc barbarian for?"

Grand Lodge

i love epic characters

Epic characters are a blast.

I'm tempted to maybe give this a shot. I don't know anything about 3pp so there's no way I could use it. But I don't care if anyone else does. Although, this "Legendary (whatever class)" business sounds kinda cool. Know nothing about it but it does sound cool. :)

Update: I am hard at work writing up the recruitment. Doubtful I'll be done tonight(it's almost 4am and sleep soon), but I should hopefully have it all ready for later today(the 8th).
