Animist & Lores

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

So what is the point of giving a Wisdom class a bunch of Lores each day which they aren't even specialized in? We do know that to make the most use of the Animist you're probably going to build Wis, Str, Con, Dex and if you are a more caster type I suppose you could build Wis, Int, Con, Des probably more like Wis, Dex, Con, Int but the problem is you fight over needing Str & Con as a Melee Animist making the Lores only half useful to a class if they play most Caster side and build some Int, please make themn Wisdom Based Paizo...

Don't forget that when you make a check using an applicable lore skill, the DC is usually reduced by at least 2, if not 5.

While they're at it they could make Strikes key off wisdom too when using devouring dark or embodiment of battle! Go all 5e and consolidate the whole class around one attribute.

These lores scale as you level up, and as pointed out, the DC to use lore skills is reduced compared to a regular skill. The Animist doesn't need much if any intelligence to get good use out of its lore skills.

I feel like it's important to remember that the lores aren't there as a big feature. They're filling two roles: one is as "tags" for wandering feats to allow forward compatibility, and the other is addressing the weird situation where a spirit of something doesn't give you any knowledge of that thing. It's fine if a spirit doesn't make you on par with a specialized gnome Investigator, just so long as you aren't ignorant about the topic.

If the lores were also wisdom-keyed, there would be a strong incentive to take spirits for broadly applicable lores. It would push the class towards more of a spirit detective.

I've been fiddling around with the Animist class, and honestly, I think it would work better if the key ability was optional between Int and Wis, depending on which granted class skill you choose.

The Animist as a class generally has a lot of stuff that isn't strictly necessary for them to function, but that they get anyway just because. Lore skills are among those benefits, along with extra spell slots, better-than-average class feats, and so on. Those skills plug into wandering feats as prerequisites, and do make certain situational RK checks easier (to the point where you're likely to do well without investing Intelligence), but otherwise the Animist has nothing really pushing them to lean into the knowledge-gaining side of their character, even though they have a dedicated anti-hazard apparition and three different flavors of gish apparition. I suspect this aspect just wasn't deemed important enough to warrant more feature or feat support, which is a shame given how this could've easily lent itself to an additional RK-centric apparition.
