Is there a way to build a mute spellcaster?

Advice

As the topic says, I'm looking to build a mute spellcastor. I'm building something similar to Neo from RWBY for a game a friend of mine is running with flaws. I think it'll be hilarious to do this and cause there are a lot of people interested in this game.

Is there a way to build a mute spellcastor? Please help as I'm really liking this idea and would very much love to be a mute terror on my friend.

mute musician bard is hilarously powerful
Wolfscarred curse oracle could probably pass
Wolfscarred curse pact wizard is also a thing

Just take Silent Spell and cast any verbal component spells at +1 level?

Psychic casting doesn't require verbal components at all. The most simple approach might be sorcerer with psychic bloodline, but personally I'd take the chance to play a psychic.

Being mute can come from any source. It could be a roleplay restriction you imposed on yourself, without mechanical benefit. It could be a monk's vow of silence. It could be one of the things IluzryMage mentioned.

Just play the character as mute and hand wave the fact that he uses some other form of "verbal" communication to cast spells, like grunts, or mouth movements or sign language etc.

This is a neat role play opportunity and will have plenty of other drawbacks, don't impose any additional drawbacks (like difficulty in spell casting) unless the player actually wants them.

If you want a mute spell caster an Oracle with the mute curse is the logical choice. They can cast their spells as if modified by the silent spell without having to increase the level of the spell. If you don’t like the oracle spell list, you could always use the VMC rules and still take the mute curse.

play an Astomoi.

Deaf curse, but yes this is the way. Also a number of other paths toward getting an Oracle curse (eg., Pact Wizard, albeit starting at level 5).

Deaf is not the same as mute. Deaf means you cannot hear, mute means you cannot talk. People who are deaf often have trouble speaking, but that is not always the case.

There is a mute curse for oracles it is from Jade Regent if I am not mistaken.

Can you link to it MS? I just checked on AoN but I'm not seeing Mute as an optional curse. I do however see Tongues or Song-Bound. That second one made me think of that episode of Scrubs where the patient could only experience the world as a musical production.

Anyway, I don't see a curse that renders the PC mute.

I also couldn't find a "mute" curse, but the "Deaf" curse has you cast all spells as silent...

apparently there was an oracle harpy NPC in Jade Regent that had a “mute” curse, but only incomplete information on the curse mechanics could be inferred from it. Topically, the key aspect, all of your spells getting Silent Spell metamagic effect for free, is the same as Deaf curse. But it was never published as a complete player option mechanic.

From a power level perspective, it sounds like Mute is probably better, because instead of eating deafness-related perception penalties, you get…useful telepathic abilities. “Curse”.

I found it in Hero Labs.

"Mute (Ex) Zaiobe’s oracle curse renders her mute—she can’t speak, use verbal spell components, or use her captivating song as a result. This same curse, though, grants her the ability to cast all spells as if using the Silent Spell metamagic feat without modifying that spell’s actual level. In addition, Zaiobe can communicate telepathically with any creature she is in physical contact with. She can also maintain a telepathic bond with one specific creature at a time by taking a full-round action to link her mind to that creature during telepathic communication. Currently, she shares this link with Kikonu, even though, ironically, the two are not speaking. Zaiobe can change the target of her telepathic link once per day." The Brinewall Legacy pg. 43

Somewhat puzzling is that this Oracle is 2nd level, so all of the above would be 1st level effects of the curse. That's not even remotely balanced, and at the very least the telepathy should be gained later on.

IMO it is to balance a harpy at a very low level so she can't use captivating song and is meant to be a unique curse.

In Hero Labs the telepathic bond can be changed 1 a day per 5 levels. The part on casting spells only mentions the spell level not the time it takes. That means a oracle with the mute cures still has to spend the extra time to cast spells. So, while the limitations on the curse are not a severe as deaf, the powers granted are also less.

Ooh, that's a good point! You'd still need to have stuff spread out across levels, or add stuff for the higher levels, to make it a proper PC ready curse, but making every spell a full-round action is actually quite a downside. Certainly not too much for a curse, but the curse is definitely not overpowered.

Oracle curses on Aon, and Oracle curses on d20pfsrd
as above, the Mute Oracle curse is found in
Jade Regent AP49 pg42:
NPC Zaiobe has SQ oracle’s curse (mute) and is connected to Pazuzu (Patron).
Mute (Ex) Zaiobe’s oracle curse renders her mute—she can’t speak, use verbal spell components, or use her captivating song as a result. This same curse, though, grants her the ability to cast all spells as if using the Silent Spell metamagic feat without modifying that spell’s actual level. In addition, Zaiobe can communicate telepathically with any creature she is in physical contact with. She can also maintain a telepathic bond with one specific creature at a time by taking a full-round action to link her mind to that creature during telepathic
communication. Currently, she shares this link with Kikonu, even though, ironically, the two are not speaking. Zaiobe can change the target of her telepathic link once per day.

Because of the telepathy at touch and linked telepathy your GM is going to have to approve this.
It would be acceptable to me if;
Telepathy at touch required a full-rnd action to sync then on the succeeding round (maintaining touch) communication as if speaking. {prevents 'mass' transfer of ideas/concepts or books etc}
Telepathic Link - just delete from the Oracle curse.
The Mute oracle curse should offer some relief - choosing one option.
1) Silent spell as if casting spontaneously (full-rnd actn). Then as if Silent spell applied without raising the casting time or spell level [1 +Orcl/4 +CHA]/d.
2) Replace verbal components with thought component as per Psychic.
