Proposal -- multi-DM, site-based Rise of the Runelords sandbox rewrite

I've seen several proposals for multi-DM/DM trade/DM-less etc. projects, so here's another -- what if we re-did the original AP as a sandbox (this would involve rewriting the statblocks for many/maybe even most encounters), and split it among DMs by site -- for example one DM might be in charge of Foxglove manor, another Thistletop, another the Catacombs of Wrath, as well as specific NPCS -- or we could split it up by more general zone -- one person's in charge of Sandpoint, another Fort Rannick, another Magnimar, etc.

Condensation in Action: Rise of the Runelords Edition!

For something even more ambitious, we could even combine Rise, Crimson Throne, and Shattered Star into one mega sandbox/campaign zone.

What this wouldn't be:

We're not just splitting the books up and running them in order, the idea is to make it less linear, and it will require some reworking of stat blocks and encounters. The idea would be to make the whole AP sandbox run in the 'sweet spot' where the game works the best (we could talk about what levels that was). If you want to just run the books in order, that's totally not what I'm proposing -- someone else can organize that if that's their desire.

No one can play that doesn't want to run an area -- this isn't just a recruitment for players for the AP 'out of the box'; don't apply if you're not willing to do that.

We'd have to agree on build rules and other such things, but it might be an interesting experiment.

This is an interesting endeavor count me curious Sebecloki as I usually make campaigns out of a handful of alterred modules and personal works. And all my games tend to be sandbox-ish not completely sandbox as I find very few players know how to do that well. So I take sandbox and mix it with missions and see where the players go.

Interested. I usually just start my sandbox games with an AP or module and is just kind of diverges from there. Since this is 2 weeks old, I am wondering whether we will actually get enough people to run it.

Who knows still back when CompuServe and 2400baud modems were the rage I coordinate a group of 5 GMs running 5 different sub-genres where the story arcs could cross and merge and separate. Which led to a rather rich experience for the about 25 players and 50 characters that were running about within that world.

So it is quite doable

Point being not a lot of peple are signing up or showing interest. But we will see.

Silver Crusade

This would be my first 1e AP. I'm willing to give this a try.

I too am interested in giving this a shot.

I'm interested as well, but I guess I'd have to add this is dependent on the amount of time I would need to commit. I don't have bunches of spare time.

One thing I'll mention that could potentially be helpful is the Sandpoint: Light of the Lost Coast campaign setting book. It fills out Sandpoint even more, giving stats for more NPC residents, and attaching small quests to many of the people and places in the town. It's set after the events in ROTRL, but that only affects some of the quests.

I’d like to hear more before I commit to anything, but I’m potentially interested in playing this.

I was also thinking about some of the add-on material in Wayfinder -- however, this is going to be a considerable amount of work for everyone involved -- retooling and rewriting whole sections of material, changing every stat block, etc., so that doesn't sound like it's a good fit for your expectations. Very, very little will be able to be used 'out of the box', and there will be considerable partial DMing duties on top of that.

Alright, I don't think this will be a fit for me then. Best of luck all!

If anyone in this thread is serious about trying this, I think it would be helpful to start working on build rules, dividing up areas, and level -- I need to emphasize again, you need to be prepared to be DM in addition to a player, and this is not a suggestion to run RoTR out of the box, book by book, for some players. I would only be one of 4-6 characters and would only run, for example, the catacombs of wrath or magnimar, depending on how we divide stuff up. Anyone else interested would have to be willing to run whole sections of a sandbox campaign for the other players.

First of all, I suggest we make a discussuon tab to get notifications.

But yeah I'm down.
