Planning on making a defense focused wizard. Are there enough spellcasters in this AP to make counterspell worth it?

It can be worth it. When it works against a powerful spell that can hurt you it is very good. It's far too limited for my tastes.

Having run it through book 2 so far, I'd say not as a character focus, but it really depends on what you're giving up for the ability.
