Greetings!
The following is a journal from a newly begun Pathfinder 2nd Edition homebrew game.
Our story begins in Kaer Maga, where four intrepid adventurers are about to set out on a journey into the wilds of Golarion. Newly formed 1st level characters in hand, we are introduced to:
While asking around town and checking the various "Help Wanted" boards in Kaer Maga, the team learns of a Varisian man by the name of Hugo Exetal who is looking for caravan escorts out of town. He offers good gold, food, water, and transport from Kaer Maga out onto the Storval Plateau, destined for the Trading Post and the annual Horse Moot (a massive agricultural exchange fair where the newly foaled horses, yearlings, and all manner of other goods are exchanged amongst the Shoanti Quah, as well as the few non-Shoanti folks who live or travel the area.)
After some negotiations and introductions, the team agrees to the job and meets Hugo, along with his employees/partners, Korliss the Lizardfolk and Bank-Cha the Kobold. The two only speak Draconic (or so they claim), limiting the heroes' ability to communicate very much with them, but Hugo seems to share their language without a problem. After purchasing some last minute gear, every sets out for their journey in the morning, stepping onto the Storval Plateau at the end of July, aiming to travel the next week and reach the Trading Post at the beginning of August. The caravan contains the team, Hugo with his two assistants, two heavy wagons loaded down with canvas, lumber, iron and other such materials, along with dried foodstuffs, salt, and spices. Basically, everything you might find in a chandlery, plus 4 mules.
After four days ride, Zep spots some vultures circling over something off in the distance, and Skye heads out to investigate. Taking advantage of the tall savannah grasses, she sneaks close enough to find 3 large (Medium) predators crouching over and devouring some kind of animal. Unfortunately, she did not identify them or see anything amiss (other than some apparently natural predation), and snuck back to report her findings. The crew redirected around the kill site a bit, but with a very lucky (nat-20) roll on the critter's part, they caught the scent of the caravan and began to stalk them.
A short time later, three blood-streaked and iron-chain-collared predators (hyenas, now ID'd by Tobitt), charged out of the grass and the fight was on. Poor Fyxsius took a bite right away, after missing his acid-bomb tosses, and got knocked on his butt. Zep's dog also got chomped, but held its footing, while poor Bob the Mule got severly bit.
GMs Note: I elected to keep the NPCs out of direct action for the time being, both as a means to limit the number of action I had to resolve and also to allow the players to get used to encounter time action. All 4 players are new to the system, so I wanted to let them get their feet under them before I go full-bore.
The fight went a bit wonky as Tobitt chose to glomp onto a hyena's private-parts, channeling a Harm spell and then going to work with his shears. Only doing his part to keep the unwanted pet population down, I guess, in the spirit of Bob Barker and Drew Carey. Once the team got used to combat a bit the fight went their way pretty well, only taking minor injuries as Skye and Zep both managed critical hits, some sneak attacks, and more goblin shenanigans. Fyxsius tried his best, but low level alchemists in melee combat just aren't in an ideal position.
We closed out the night as poor Bob the Mule got turned into Poor Bob the Dead Mule, dragged from his traces and off into the grass. Two of the three hyenas were dispatched, while the third made good its escape with food. The party debated healing up and performing risky surgery on each other (mostly Tobitt the goblin) as we broke for the night.
XP earned: 120
