I've made it no secret that while new classes after core have been both welcome and interesting. That I also find them weaker than most core classes almost without exception.
I like both these classes. Inventor moreso.
But I feel like feedback without criticism is at best, a stroking of ego.
Most of my complaints lay with gunslinger in fact.
1- I've never been ok with the reload property. I fail to see how it is balanced. Nothing a crossbow does, warrants that debilitating mechanic compared to volley or just... Not having a drawback at all.
2- the gunslinger has a DM fiat failure mechanic. If for whatever reason due to story or repercussion, you were not able to clean your gun. You are now severely hampered by both it and the reload property. While you could argue that a DM that exploits this is singling out a player. Then I ask you. Why does the mechanic exist at all? Realism? Meanwhile they can shoot a weapon they have thrown to do more damage and defy physics to bounce back to your hand? I don't have an issue with a lack of realism it's a fantasy game afterall and that ability is cool. Just pointing out the discrepancy.
3- tying a rng failure effect to a basic game mechanic as a form of risk, feels bad. Talking about the feat that expedites reloads but might make the gun jam instead. Feats like these seem only useful if you know your going to be unconscious before the start of your next round. Yes it's a feat, so is optional. But is poorly designed imo. A better feat would be something like a flourish dual wield reload mechanic that lets you reload both guns for one action.
These are my main issues with gunslinger right now. It's a fun seeming class, but just doing mock battles, it's extremely clunky and rather one dimensional and unrewarding. You spend majority of your actions on either attacking or reloading Wich puts a lot of constraint's on your versatility with general actions. I see little reason to not just make a short bow or daikyo (butchered spelling I'm sure) fighter and retain my versatility.
Inventor. Honestly? I've yet to find anything remotely as unappetizing. I really like their design. I'll be curious to what their dedication looks like. I love the idea of a Magus free archetype inventor.
