I'm a rather big fan of Legend of the Five Rings. I love any setting with tons of lore, like Golarion, Faerun, or the Planes, but L5R has held a place in my heart since I first played about a decade ago. The setting demands intrigue, as a third of the schools are dedicated to courtier, but between duels, bandits, clan wars, and more, warriors and mages find their place.
It's a setting for stories about nobles, but it doesn't have to star them. Every noble house of Rokugan started somewhere before the fall of the Kami (except those started by the Kami themselves).
This idea is the story or a group of peasants and their rise to nobility, and hopefully the founding of a minor clan.
It all starts one "20 Goblin Winter", where the crab are so desperate, they're opening it up to *anyone* who can double the bounty.
You're a group of heinen, eta, or gaijin who overheard this rumor, though I haven't narrowed down a starting location.
The start of the story is about just surviving as a peasant traveling across clan borders to the Kaiu Wall at the shadow land borders. That isn't a safe, easy, or cheap trip.
I wouldn't use a map, and I would encourage everyone to write in a uniform, third person past tense format to give us a real narrative flow as a group. I find present and past tense jumping back and forth jarring when I reread things players have said and my own notes, etc and it just reads better.

Yeap.
Unfortunately, while I announced my idea here first, the first response came days after I had gotten frustrated, posted again on another site, found an entire group, and had everyone make characters. We started the actual game the same day my first response came up here.
I never have nor shall I ever understand folks who do several week long recruitments. When I have an idea for a story in my head it has to get out, pronto.
I leave no judgment, as obviously not everyone sees every recruitment every day, and on a Paizo site a L5R game is obviously very niche. But I've had too many games I've been a player in not take off or fizzle in the very beginning because they don't take off with a bang.
(S+~#, I'm still waiting over two months for the GM in one game to put up his third update.) I once waited over a month after a recruitment was over for a game to start before I got frustrated and quit. (And they didn't start two months after that! An all too common phenomenon with PbP)
Meanwhile, I've gone a few hundred posts in before stagnation hit when I rush-recruited in the past with another alias. So I apologize if I seem flippant in that regard. I simply have been burned too often by waiting around and hoping a reply would one day come.
That being said I can let anyone here know if anyone drops or would desire another player in the group, if you want. The current make up is two social heavy shugenjas, a bushi and a ninja.
