The Sturdy Satchel, or how I learned to stop caring about POWER CREEP and learned to love the bag

Excerpt from the new Lost Omen's Pathfinder Society Guide:

[The Sturdy Satchel] holds up to 4 Bulk of items, and the first 2 Bulk contained within the sturdy satchel do not count against your Bulk limits.

This strikes me as a low-level must have for any adventurer carrying (or expecting to need to carry) lots of gear. Now, when combined with a backpack, a character can carry their strength mod + 9, instead of their strength mod + 7.

Another sign of power creep in 2E? If more items like this one begin to appear, will there really be any need to track bulk ever?

(I'm not particularly upset about it or anything; I just thought it'd make for an interesting topic of discussion.)

I mean, there basically never was any need to track Bulk past the early levels. A Bag of Holding is a level 4 item that holds 25 Bulk.

But yes, assuming this is a low level mundane item it's helpful in the early levels, though carrying more Bulk is rarely gonna be power creep in any meaningful sense.

I'm also left to wonder if this is meant to be considered a property of other satchels, and really of containers in general.

Cannot fully comment without getting a full item description in context, but in general...

Assuming you don't ignore how satchels as bags work irl you would want to be dropping it every combat.
I suppose it depends on how much you value the low level benefit and whether you do much roleplaying of your character, or if you treat its gear as mechanics only.

Yeah, after the 14th I'll be able to say more.

With both, 8 bulk minimum is nice AND if it's mundane it allows a respectable bulk total without magic which is of great help in a low magic game. If it's magic, it's still nice if it's significantly lower in level and cost to a bag of holding. It's only a bad thing if you're a DM and regularly plan to give out more treasure/loot than you expect your players to carry. :P

It's a mundane item.

*thumbs up* Works for me. It'll mean less pack animals get bought. ;)

That isn't a nice thing to call the party barbarian.

Isn't this just how backpacks already work? As of the latest errata, that is.

Yeah but you usually don't carry two backpacks.

It does more than I described. I just didn't want to spoil everything. :)

You had me a 2 free bulk! :)

If you put your backpack in a sturdy satchel, does it stop working? :)

I suspect they are correcting for a mistake in the bulk limits, and it's not really power creep beyond the system's design parameters.

When non-sturdy shields beyond level 10 or so are adjusted, that won't be power creep either.

The fact of the matter is no one will be using the normal satchel once this hits the shelves. Except for price, the sturdy satchel is strictly better in every possible way.

Let's be real, it is an item that takes two hands... it was only ever a rp/npc item anyway.

All containers use two hands to transfer items in and out, so it's in line with everything else: from sack/bag to chest, all need 2 hands to 'use'. In the game, you are physically incapable of retrieving an item out of an open sack without using 2 hands. ;)

Now don't you start with that hand debate nonsense! XD

Note, I wasn't the one that started it. Just pointing out that a satchel isn't any different from other containers in respects to hands. ;)

1 free Bulk. The Satchel has a Bulk of 1.

Yes, sounds like 1 free bulk, toward carrying infrequently needed items you want nearby, such as various toolkits you may want quickly, but don't merit a bandoleer.

The OP's premise is flawed. The Sturdy Satchel is a heavy Backpack. As The Gleeful Grognard indicates, you don't carry two backpacks.

The benefit of the Sturdy Satchel is its hardness, hp and some protection of contents at the price of weight. Both hold 4 bulk, with the first 2 free, but the Sturdy Satchel has a weight of 1 bulk while the backpack has a weight of "-".

^^^This.

The first three words of the description literally are 'This heavy backpack...'
It's text is literally the same as a backpack, only heavier, tougher, and waterproof.

Given its Uncommon rarity, it's hardly an example of 'power creep'
