Owen Stephens' twitter thread is pretty depressing to read. RPG industry seems to be epitome of "thankless job where you get abused by fans" :/
Figured out we should have discussion thread for it here too. Not honestly too surprised since I'm aware of what game industry on video game side is like and while on rpg side it seems even more depressing, its same type of depressing if that makes sense.

I just went and checked his tweets out. The responses to his #RealGameIndustry tweets are mostly commiserative. No Twitter-cesspool action going on that I saw (not that it doesn't in general).
I've heard Owen talk about these topics before (I assume I saw it on his blog) and none of these come as a surprise. TTRPGs are: a small niche industry, primarily creative work and therefore subjective, and very demanding on the writers. The TTRPG industry also directly serves fans, so it's like any other general public-facing industry, you're going to interact with crazy customers whether you like it or not.

Now that take and add in the fact that you can't earn a living at it. That's now depressing it is.

At this point apathy is more or less equivalent to "Well what are we going to do?" because we don't have the individual power or even group ability to affect the change necessary to entire industries.
Do you honestly want to know what you can do? Leave a review of a product, especially if you love it. It does a number of things:
* It makes everyone that worked on it feel great. Getting a great review can literally be the highlight of someone's week.
* Reviews of products help those on the fence about buying something to sway them.
* It gives publishers an idea of what kinds of products you want in the future.

It's honestly nice to hear something small that customer can do since it is pretty easy to fall into apathy.
That said, mostly posting here that enworld did second round up of the tweets, these ones are mostly applicable to all industries though, like the ones about people getting promoted to manager role despite having no management skills.

The difference is that other industries have the capital to do something about that issue. My first job out of college was a manager in a fiberglass insulation factory. When it was obvious that I didn't know much about managing people, I was sent to a week long seminar on management. That kind of money just isn't there in the RPG industry (other industries that don't do this simply don't have the will).

It also helps a freelancer grow. If a review says 'I liked A, B and C, but D did not make sense', you have something you can go over. Expecially if more people say D did not make sense.
Of course, negative reviews can make you feel better. That one guy who accused me of totally ruining the game makes me laugh every time I read his review :D
