Leaning into the Action Economy

I'm running the playtest and a homebrew game at my local comic store and something alot of my caster keep saying was they wished their damaging Cantrips would work like the spell magic missile. After talking with them we are doing some really cool things with their Cantrips.

So that is the topic of this conversation, do you feel Cantrips and the spells should lean into using actions to do more damage, raise the DC check or anything else. For me I love the action economy and I think the creators should lean a little more on those 3 actions to spice things up. Well thats just my 2 cents

Well I could support some variety with that mechanic I feel that giving it to cantrips might be a bit OP. Cantrips are supposed to be about equivalent to a simple ranged weapon of it’s level, better than that and it should cost resources. For magic missile it works because despite it being perfect accuracy force damage, 3 actioning it is more or less how it stays relevant as a resource costing spell. I could imagine this mechanic for spells but not cantrips. Plus casters get a lot of use out of that 3rd action, giving them a move or the ability to cast shield every turn. That’s my opinion anyway.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The problem is mostly that spellcaster classes don't have good options that only take 1-action to go along with their 2-action cantrips and spells, so they're often left with an extra action they have no great way of using. This is part of what is pushing casters towards playing like gishes, since magical weapons are the only good "filler" options they have that cost only 1-action. This has been brought up a lot, though, so I expect to see it addressed in the final version.

IMO metamagic should fill the role you ask for OP, not cantrips. And to an extent they do... It's just right now those circumstances where metamagic helps is a little niche. Overwhelming spell is great against creatures with resistance. Reach spell is great for when you want to keep your distance while laying down a shorter range spell.

But there isn't currently a generic DC boosting metamagic. And to be fair there maybe shouldn't be as that would be very strong and become a default option. But I do like the idea of spending a little extra time charging up a spell to give it more punch. Really max out that spirit bomb.
