Having just finished running Into the Unknown as a PbP, and possibly looking at running more Society games in the future, I have run up against a problem with Starship combat.
When combat is on a square grid, it's easy to represent the map on a spreadsheet (usually google sheets) that everyone can link to and consult, and define actions by alpha-numeric grid refs. With a hex grid, that isn't so easy.
- Sheets is out of the question, it just wont allow the movement properly.
- I tried RPTools' Maptool, and can set something up, but facing is important and I couldn't think of a sensible way to represent it. Also the process of move icon, take screen shot, save to internet, link in post is arduous.
- I tried just updating the map for myself, and not bothering sharing it, but that is arduous, difficult to convey to players, and felt unsatisfying.
So, any other ideas? Ideally it would be an online thing like sheets that I can link to in posts for people to see the current state. It needs to be hex grid based.
What do other Starfinder PBP GMs do?
