Playtest corebook

Prerelease Discussion

Hey!

Me and my friends always wanted to get into Pathfinder. Though it always seemed a very daunting prospect; with dozens of books and probably hundreds of accessories. It felt more time consuming than it was worth; especially since my gaming group all have full time jobs and me as the dm have other responsibilities outside of work.

But with a new edition we have a chance to get in from the start.

I'm personally thinking about ordering the hardback playtest rulebook. But was wondering have well it was put together. Is it basically just text and rules. Or is it an actual book with art and layout.; that I can actually enjoy looking at even when the book is replaced by the 2nd edition corebook

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's going to have art by the same artist who is doing the actual rulebook for Aug 2019. But if I recall correctly, it will be sketches and not always completed full-color art.

With gorgeous interior art from Pathfinder cover artist Wayne Reynolds and new rules concepts on nearly every page, the Pathfinder Playtest Rulebook is your gateway to the future of Pathfinder. The only thing missing is your playtest feedback!

Will Wayne Reynolds contribute art to the new edition?

Wayne's incredible character illustrations and gorgeous painted covers have been a staple of Pathfinder from the very beginning. We're proud to announce that Wayne Reynolds has been designing new concepts and characters for Pathfinder Second Edition for more than two years now, including updated art for the iconic characters from the Core Rulebook, detailed illustrations of all the key player races, and more (including a new goblin iconic!). The Pathfinder Playtest Rulebook features an all-new painted cover of our favorite heroes battling a white dragon (a throwback to 2008's "Beta Playtest Edition" cover). Wayne's interior illustrations appear throughout the Playtest Rulebook, with scores of never-before-seen takes on classic Pathfinder heroes, monsters, and treasures.

It'll be a work in progress. But yeah, I don't doubt it'll be interesting. It you don't like unfinished things, I wouldn't recommend buying it. It you love to see half-way sketches in art books and "making off", this will be a great purchase.

Also, it won't be a perfect introduction for you and your friends, being a platest, basically a "beta" of the game rules, but you fresh point of view would be greatly appreciated and useful for the playtest. It will test how much better the game is as an introduction to new players.

I’ll be buying the playtest but to be honest, if your group is seriously time-poor I think I’d recommend waiting until next August and getting the final game. The risk you run is you learn this year’s rules and then have to part-unlearn some of it in twelve months time. Personally, I find it more difficult to switch to a similar system than to a very different one.

That’s all predicated on you wanting to play the game and not specifically wanting to be part of the playtest, of course. If you have the inclination/energy to participate in that, then I’d order the playtest and just accept the game will change substantially in twelve months time.

Note that there’s a looming time limit. If you want a hardcopy of the playtest book, you need to order it by the end of April.
