Interest Check - DnD 5e Waterdeep Campaign (2e era)

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hi folks. So I've just discovered my old 2e City of Splendors boxed set, and I'd love to do a 5e campaign set in that era. This would be the end of 335 NR (1368 DR), so post- Time of Troubles (Cyric, Midnight, and Kelemvor are gods) but pre- the return of Netheril and the Spellplague (blech).

It may also involve some of the dungeon crawls from Tales from the Yawning Portal, but will probably be based in an original storyline, likely involving the Harpers (and so would favour good-aligned PCs). PCs could be from anywhere, but would start somewhere between Mirabar and Waterdeep. The start might be slightly railroady, to get the characters installed in Waterdeep, then would be all about the sandbox. Could take place entirely in the city, or involve using Waterdeep as a base from which to travel the Realms. Could be working for the Harpers directly, or just having some contact with them, depending on how PCs decide. Could involve crazy dungeon crawls (I have the 2e Undermountain boxed set too), or could focus on RP, intrigue, and politics.

Anyhow, I'm just trying to get a sense of how many people would be keen for this - at the moment, I'm trying to get a pbp game started for my old school crew, but they're dragging the chain real hard, so I might pull the pin on that, in which case I would definitely run this. I might run both anyhow. Or there may be no interest at all, which would make the decision for me.

So feel free to voice your opinions on this idea! Go!

I'm interested. Played a bit of 5th ed in f2f so far. Are you implementing any house rules?

I have GMed a bit of 5e f2f, but not enough to consider messing with house rules yet. I'd be up for discussion on that sort of thing though. Did you have anything specific in mind?

I would be interested in some more 5e D&D.

Such as ability generation, whether ua content is allowed, any modifications to races or classes.

Would be on a case-by-case basis. I do actually use UA Ranger, but slightly tweaked... As for abilities, I tend to do 4d6 drop lowest, but if it's horrible, reroll all scores. This is largely because my f2f players prefer rolling, but I don't want anyone to get stuck with a gimped character. Happy for point-buy, but would go by the book there.

I have a bard rolled for a campaign like this - just need to make an alias. I'm assuming the additional rulebooks (Xanathar's, etc.) are okay to use, right?

Yep all official stuff would be allowed.

Consider me interested!

Silver Crusade

drop a dot

I have notions for an Uthgardt human barbarian, path of the zealot, in Waterdeep because a prophecy said a threat to the tribe must be faced there. I will expand on that during the week.

I would love to bring along a fey-based half-elf warlock! A sort of shadowy/illusion type character. Waterdeep would be a perfect place for him to continue pursuing the eldritch knowledge connected to his powers.

Either that or a classic elven ranger! That may depend on how the dice roll.

*EDIT*

Out of curiosity what would you posting requirements be? Are you looking for several times a day, once per day, etc?

I have been itching to play a Wood Elf Monk. I think that would work well

I would be down for some more 5e. Is anything from UA going to be permitted, or just the published books?

I'm not an expert on UA stuff so I would research and discuss each case on its own merits. As noted above, I use the UA ranger with a tweak here and there. I tend to be reasonably permissive, but I'm not a big fan of munchkinism. Unless I'm playing Munchkin.

Okay, fair enough. I would likely be looking at things like archetypes or feats (although the article on starter spells has some nice stuff in it!), so it may not come into play immediately.

Yeah unless the general consensus in the community is that it's unbalanced I'm more than likely going to approve stuff (maybe with tweaks here and there). So if this goes ahead, I would say build your character with UA stuff but tell me about it. Then if I have issues or concerns we could discuss it.

Missed your edit, sorry. I'd be going for once per day as a general rule.

Got my bard an alias on here! Just need to whip up a backstory.

Love your enthusiasm Coren, but bear in mind this is just an interest check :) I'll put up a proper recruitment page if the campaign goes ahead.

Consider me an interested vote as well! I'm mulling over a similar campaign myself with the Mere of Dead Men series from Dungeon magazine converted to 5E.

Okay, looks like we're getting there in terms of numbers. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and sort out my other potential campaign one way or the other. I'll post up here if (when) I start a proper recruitment thread, but please feel free to keep asking questions or throwing around ideas about the campaign.

Tentatively interested.

On the original post. I'm open to political shenanigans and faction intrigue, but would prefer a more independent party than being Harper minions. I won't object to dungeon bashing though!

And on character creation. What do you think of the core book option of custom backgrounds?

Harpers will almost certainly be present, but to minion or not to minion would be entirely up to the PCs!

I'd be way up for custom backgrounds. Again, that would be a negotiated process.

Dark Archive

I'd potentially be interested, though it seems like you have more than enough interest already.

I'll be asking for submissions once I put up a proper recruitment page, so if you're keen please don't count yourself out. Quick survey of those who've registered interest, do you prefer 5e point buy as per the PHB, or 4d6, drop lowest, arrange as you like? When rolling, I usually allow rolling two arrays, pick the best.

I've seen both and, honestly, I prefer points buy.

With bounded accuracy, a small difference in stats makes a significant difference. So it's easy for dice rolls to leave a character with an unfair advantage or disadvantage. Points

Points buy would mean that everyone would be starting on a level playing field. It would also be easier to create encounters for, as the party power level would be easier to gauge.

Dark Archive

I am easy, I don't tend to roll well - but I'd rather make a character I enjoy, rather than try and squeeze out an extra +1, so I probably don't utilize my points to peak efficiency anyway.

I'd absolutely love playing in this as well. Had a wizard in mind, something like a scholar of Faerun lore, the Creator Races or some ancient topic.

I don't think rolling stats works well with 5e, personally.

Also all the game styles work for me, though I'd vote for crazy dungeon crawls as they work quite well with pbp.

I like point buy generally. Let's assume that then.

Ok, I'll get some general character generation guidelines together and get a recruitment page up in the next couple of days. I'll post a link on here too, so you can't miss it :)

I suppose you could always mix and match. Have the 4d6 twice thing and if both arrays are low or bad or whatnot, have the option to choose the point buy. No idea how that would affect stat differences among characters, but I assume it would alleviate too much discrepancy somewhat.

Dotted...would love this I have this pc ready to go and can and would alt as needed.

This could be interesting. I'm not very experienced with 5e, but it could be fun.

I can definitely do one post a day. I wouldn't mind giving a try to rolling some dice. I haven't actually rolled stats in a very long time and wouldn't mind a little change of pace to be honest! That said, I am fine with point buy.

In the meantime, I will start working on my warlock with the standard point buy option. Which, also I was curious how you felt about the Raven Queen patron from Unearthed Arcana? I really like the raven powers, but I was thinking we could tie that to one of the Feywild entities perhaps? If you don't like that idea, I'll just stick with the Archfey.

@ Faelyn: I've always liked the Raven Queen, and I'm sure we could re-skin or "multiverse" it. In case of the latter, she is virtually unknown in the Realms, and RQ warlocks may come into conflict with the minions of existing gods (Kelemvor, Shar).

Mechanically I'm not seeing any issues at first glance, except for the immunity to frightened at 10th level. I get what it's going for, but it seems far too... total. Anyway, that's a tiny thing, and 10 levels away.

So yeah, of you want to have a crack when the proper page goes up, feel free to go with this concept :)

Excellent! Thank you, Hewy. The Raven Queen fits very much the idea I have going for this character. Also, if/when he makes it to 10th level I'm okay with reworking the immunity to Frightened, perhaps we could change that around to Advantage on saves against the Frightened condition?

Hi folks, recruitment thread is here! Please head along and make an official submission if you're still keen on playing this game, cheers :)

Absolutely...submitting in recruitment thread.
