[SPOILERS] Rusty Rivet

Dead Suns

If the PCs board the Rusty Rivet to treat with Captain Okwana and wind up killing her crew in any confrontation that may ensue, is anything keeping them from claiming the ship as their own and either running around with two ships or *gulp* selling it?

There aren't really any rules for selling stolen ships. Some people have done the math for how much ships cost per BP, but that's all unofficial guesswork (if educated) by the community. A GM that lets their players do this is in currently uncharted territory as to how to handle it.

Personally, I'd absolutely let them do this with two conditions: 1)-attempting to take the ship and murdering the crew after they surrendered is an act of blatant piracy. Depending on how it plays out, it's potentially an alignment shifting act. 2)- to keep from having to figure out the costs, I'd just use it as an excuse to give them the 'free' BP they get toward their ship for leveling. They can't sell it for cash, but they can scrap it for parts and get upgrades to their ship from it.

Unless the group has 6+ players in it, they're probably better off sticking to one ship. Breaking the group up to two ships means they aren't going to be able to take all the potential ship combat actions each round, which could hamper them in future combats.

This might not be an obstacle to some groups. :)

However, the players should realize that there is a good reason that Piracy is punished so severely by the authorities.

Hm, is it piracy if you're taking a pirate's ship?

When I saw this thread on the front page, I assumed someone was statting up characters from the Nick Jr. TV show and wondered what stats Botasaur might have!

Then I became concerned about what events on the animated show for preschoolers could possibly warrant a spoiler warning. I just had to click to find out...

Oh, the hazards of being a father of three young kids! Still, in 10 years the youngest should be old enough to play this AP, so it's good to know what we might be in for.

Generally, if you turn it over/report it to authorities, then no. You may even get a big reward! There's always a very real chance that the pirate's ship legally belongs to someone other than the pirates, so taking it and keeping it without reporting it, only makes you pirates once removed. It's a piracy you can almost certainly get away with, assuming you're willing to never take the ship into a non-pirate friendly port. But it has consequences (at least, in my opinion).

I'm a big fan of players being encouraged to play the kinds of games they want to play. So if my players decide to be pirates, that's cool, I just want to make it clear to them that it impacts the way the rest of the campaign is played.

I'd point out too that Captain Okwana has friends - friends in the Diaspora no less - who might look very disfavorably on those who agree to parley with Free Captains and then turn to violence. If the PCs manage to get a "free" ship or prize money for turning it in to the authorities, it opens up a wave of new complications.

At least if they turn it in for Prize Money, the authorities would be willing to help them with those other complications.

That's a great idea. I'm a big fan of letting the PC's do stuff like this, but add complications and additional allies.

Put another way, if the PCs get the ship and blow the wealth tables a bit, it's not a big deal if it leads to awesome campaign moments.

Just tell them that when they "sell" it that goes towards "upgrading their own ship." If they have a problem with it, point out that the rules let you upgrade the ship for free, and that you could always revoke that and make them pay for upgrades out of pocket. Which would be SUPER difficult considering that everything sells for 10% of market value.

Makes you wonder where everything comes from. Can't come from crafters - handcrafted objects cost the same amount in materials as buying them already crafted. If all profit is ebay based and we're all just recirculating equipment, why can't the players shop on ebay just like the NPCs do?

You are forgetting the advantages of Mass Production.
