1 member crews?

General Discussion

The Starship Combat rules seem to describe how to manage very large crews, but don't seem to mention much on very small crews. For ships with maximum crews of less than 5, are all Starship roles still available but not at the same time, or are only certain roles available (I'm assuming Pilot is always available)?

In particular, what happens with ships that have an active crew of only one member where it's allowed? There are rules for changing roles in between rounds, but this comes with a problem of its own: does this mean that Interceptors and Racers can't Gunner and Pilot in the same round? Because Interceptor-class ships only allow a maximum of 1 crew member, ever. Can a weapon still be fired without an active Gunner? Does the ship still keep moving even without a Pilot, like land vehicles? Are either of these roles able to be covered by the ship's computer, similar to land vehicles?

Overall, I have a bunch of questions in regards to Starship Combat, but I felt this was the most pressing. In prepping for my campaign, my party is likely going to start off with a Shuttle-class, which potentially faces all the problems mentioned above. Even were I to just give them a bigger ship and ignore those issues, they'd have to deal with Interceptors or other tiny/small ships with 1 member crews eventually. Looking through example starships doesn't help either - there are starships that have single-member crews and lists all of their relevant checks, including both piloting and gunnery, but doesn't answer the question if they can do both in the same round or over multiple rounds.

If you do need to take multiple rounds to move/shoot, I fail to see why you'd want Interceptors, Racers, and even Fighters to begin with - that's at a massive disadvantage to ships that are already pretty squishy and don't hit hard.

I'm not sure if this information isn't listed anywhere in the book, or if I just don't see it/haven't found it yet.

Liberty's Edge

The minor ship actions are, I believe, designed to account for this.

You could also search for the old ship combat plates video. It comes up pretty easily on youtube and does include 1-goblin fighters in action.

The minor crew actions are the answer.

Seems to be the answer, actually, albeit relatively. I misread the "but only if no other action was performed this round for the role associated" as just "but only if no other action was performed this round". It still seems a bit strange you can't perform at a better capacity for tiny-frame ships, but it's something. I'm sure there's a reason for that.
