I haven't played too many summoners, though I've done several builds. I usually pick a theme and run with it. The two I really liked were a draconic eidolon (claws, bite, wing, tail, breath, etc) and a spider type (extra limbs, web, shadow form, poison, etc)

6claws 1 bite immune to each element fast healing flight and large or huge if i could afford

In terms of just aesthetic appeal, I quite like the Quetzalcoatl-type build. It's not very good mechanically, but it sure does look impressive to a have a massive flying snake monster.

Mechanically speaking, a flying mount (roughly dragon shaped) is just nice. It's a shame that the breath weapon evolutions suck, since it'd be appropriate if the complete dragon motif worked gracefully. As it stands you're spending 4 evolution points for a 1/day ability that's weaker than what an unoptimized blaster can do with a lower level spell slot.

The multiattacker is good, but I prefer to go for a reach monster build where you focus on one big slam attack, with lots of secondary effects. Very early you can have a reach slam with the push attack, so your eidolon can attack an enemy to push them 5 feet back. And then take a 5 foot step back to force the enemy to take an attack of opportunity to get back to you.

You can also use the grab evolution combined with using the dirty fighting feat to get the grapple feats. That will leave you with a really good grapple and a really big natural attack to hit people with while they are grappled.

I like a quadruped build that takes a weapon proficiency feat, typically a two-handed weapon like a greatsword, and then maxes out their natural attacks with extra limbs and claws. Works best at higher levels however, past where you pick up multiattack.

Can I say all of them? Because I kind of want to say all of them. There's just too much potential flavor and mechanical firepower to settle on one.

That said, I have a grandfathered APG Summoner in PFS that was made with the help of this guide to create a skill monkey Eidolon that can still hold her own in combat with a couple of buffs. She's a Biped with multiple instaces of the Skilled evolution to cover rogue stuff, a couple of points into Claws and Bite to keep her attacks maxed and Blindsense/Blindsight to make her the ultimate scout.

I kind of regret doubling down and wasting her early feats on Deft Hands and Alertness, considering her chances to scout have become few and far between. I may transition her into a combat monster after a level or two.

One of the players in my wife's recent campaign had a summoner with an eidolon modeled after a marilith: serpentine form, with two arms and swords at 1st level, and adding more arms, a tail attack, resistances, and Large as soon as he acquired the evolution points for them. He also invested a huge chunk of his wealth in gladii of many different special materials, to ensure that she would always have at least one that would bypass DR. By the time we stopped at 11th, she was cosmetically indistinguishable from a real marilith, and was the biggest damage-dealer in the party.

My favorite is a cerberus. Just because I'm fond of the visual once it gets large XD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

4 words: giant man-eating squirrel.

My Shadow

It detaches from me and becomes and independent creature.

Banjo: an 800 lb Gorilla with Large Size, Reach, Improved Damage slams, and grab.
