Military Strategist turned Witch?

Advice

So I want to create a new character but unsure what class would be best for him:
A human military strategist whom after a nearly disastrous military campaign due to spies, swears alliance to an unknown (witch) patron for the power to save his men. He would still be a LG or NG military strategist but also a Witch.
I'm thinking a hexcrafter magus or a cavalier with one level in witch but what ya'll think? Is it even Viable?

I don't think one level of witch would really pack the oomph you're looking for compared to what he could already do as a mid level cavalier.
A straight hexcrafter might work better

Sounds like a perfect candidate for Eldritch Knight PRC. Take the necessary levels of cavalier & witch and then go EK PRC.

I appreciate it. any particular build you suggest? I'm thinking mostly melee but every melee hexcrafter build I see involves animated hair which seems...silly for the character I'm thinking of. Perhaps I'm imagining it wrong though.

What is this? never heard of it, but I'm new.

Eldritch knight may be better actually but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with it or the hex crafter enough to suggest builds or strategies

Looks interesting. Would such a character be sufficiently powerful? Also is there a build you'd suggest? I like that it allows me to focus on the other things after 10 levels

If want witch I'd suggest 1 level of your chosen martial and 5 levels of witch into Eldritch knight, the character would be reasonably powerful if you chose strong hexes.

One thing about Eldritch Knight is that it won't improve your hexes (It won't improve the DC's of your offensive hexes, it won't give you new hexes, and there are a lot of hexes that improve at later levels ... your EK level won't count for this).

Mechanically Hexcrafter is probably stronger, but I really like the flavour of a Cavalier/Witch/Eldritch-Knight for this character (and that's saying a lot since Hexcrafter is probably my favourite class/archetype in the game).

If it's for a home game talk to your GM about allowing the EK to increase your hex level (not give you hexes, but increase their DC's and your effective Witch level for hexes). I don't think it'd be that overpowered and it's got really good flavour.

If your GM doesn't agree and you still want to go EK, you're better off taking the buffing hexes rather than the offensive ones since your DC's are going to be terrible. (Some hexes get their upgrades at level 5, some at level 8. The ones that upgrade at 5 are going to be way better for you in this case.)

What about military strategist requires a martial class? That seems pretty independent from most class abilities.

If you like witch stuff just go straight witch, unless you want martial ability.

If you want a combatant powered by a mysterious patron, battle oracle could be another way to go. Otherwise hexcrafter magus sounds better to me than dipping out of witch. You could also be a bloodrager with a bloodline sage familiar.
