D&D Named Spells

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I wonder if anyone has a list of the "names" used on old D&D spells

I remember
Bigsby
Melf
Tenser

Otiluke
Mordenkainen

Well there was
Evard's Black Tentacles
Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting.
Aganazzer's Scorcher

Spelling may be off..

Silver Crusade

Drawmij and Azuth had a few.

Leomund had lots.

All amateur hour compared to the horror of Aroden's Spellbane, but that's for another thread.

Edit: Otto too! Otto came up with Irresistible Dance, the loon

And Tasha made Hideous Laughter.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Nystul and his magic aura spell
Bigby and his 'Hand/Fist' spells
Melf and his minute meteor's & acid arrow spells
Tenser, his floating disks and transformations
Otiluke and his cold spheres
Mordenkainen and his force/blade/hound spells
Leomund and her extra dimensional residence/container spells
Otto and his dance spells
Tasha and her laughter spells
Evard and his odd anime tributes
Abi-Dalzim's hatred of plant spells
Aganazzer's phaser spells
Susstare's Chariot spell
Rary and his mnemonic spells
Drawmij's instant summon spells

Probably not complete but all the original AD&D ones are in there from the first PH.

A lot of these names are from the characters who made the spells back in OD&D but I know for a fact at LEAST 2 are from the players actual real world names, Sustarre (who wrote the original Druid class) and Nystul (who's kids I went to high school with and have their own game companies I believe).

Mordenkainen's Disjunction.

It used to be...far nastier...

Silver Crusade

Melf was the brilliantly named Elf, as played by Luke Gygax.

Still a better name than my friend's character, Elfman. Who.. is.. a male elf...

Is he a synthesist summoner?

I don't even have to click the link to know that the answer is no. At least then the name would make some sense of awesome.

There's also Nybor and his Gentle Reminder, Mild Admonishment, Stern Reproof, and Wrathful Castigation.

And my personal favorites, wildmages Nahal and his Reckless Dweomer, Nonsensical Nullifier; and Hornung and his Baleful Deflector, Surge Selector, and Random Dispatcher.

Elminster got a few as well, evasion is the only ome I recall for sure.

I always jokingly reference MILF's acid arrow... XD

the Symbul created a Synostodweomer, whatever that may be, I'm too lazy to unearth my pages from the mages to check it out.

The synostodweomer did the forbidden thing, it gave arcane casters a healing option, albeit a horrible one :)

Most of the named spells came from the eight archmages of Greyhawk, and their spells were found in the Greyhawk Adventures handbook, aside from those in the PHB and UA. Those were Nystul, Tenser, Otiluke, Mordenkainen, Rary, Otto, Bigby and Drawmij. Others were later added from other notable wizards of that campaign, e.g. Tasha was Zagygs apprentice (before she joined the Dark Side and became Iggwilv).

Those from the Forgotten Realms came later, and some of them were pretty weird, when I think of Nezram's Ruby Ray, later re-published as the Ruby Ray of Reversal and dropped for Pathfinder like a hot potato. Agannazars Scorcher is still around, though....as are some others. FR spells tended to be more powerful than Greyhawk ones, when I think of Ironguard, Spelltrap, or Spell Engine (1E version).

If you liked spells named after their creator, might I recommend checking out: Book of Magic: Signature Spells 2, from Jon Brazer Enterprises.

Nope, this was a curiosity stemming from a couple comments at the table (Somebody referenced a spell by the old name...)

Don't forget Larry! Who could forget such staples like "Laary's Forgettable Missile," "Larry's Unremarkable Shield," and "Larry's Amnesiac Ray of Forgetting Stuff?"

Yeah, I still catch myself using the 1E/2E names for things (especially floating discs, magnificent mansions, and magic auras). Decades of habit are hard to break...

Oh, oh, don't forget Joyful Voyage! That one's my favourite :3

There were some FR ones like Snilloc's snowball swarm, Geryon's death spell, and Elminster's effulgent epuration.

To this day if I have a PC research a new spell, I tack their name on it in this fashion. It's the wizard version of being published.
