how is a Promethean Alchemist played?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

all the good features that makes the alchemist what the class is, is lost. its not like the Promethean Alchemist gets any other improvements to boost his lack of combat effectiveness. so how do you play a Promethean Alchemist? you have lost your bombs and your mutagins you can not brew potions and you can not throw anything your stuck with simple arms and light armor and no shields. you can not be a fight.

what would your tactics be? how would you play a Promethean Alchemist?

Liberty's Edge

You can get Mutagen back at 2nd level as a Discovery, Feral Mutagen at 4th if you like, and make a very solid melee build. Additionally, your Homonculus buddy provides a solid melee helper.

Alternately, you could go with the utility alchemist route, with the Homonculus going into melee for you, and you staying back while providing buffs and the like.

Actually you can't.

Ah. You're right. Missed that bit. You technically could with a multiclass, but that's probably not necessary.

But still, in and of itself, mutagen is a +2 to hit, +3 damage. The homonculus is a bigger damage boost than that. Melee works fine.

I think it is a variant on the summoning monster.
The Homunculus is your combatant, and the Alchemist is the healer, buffer & face.
You can prep CLW extracts that work on the homunculus.
You can build animated objects at level 1 (this class is a gold hog).
You can totally get Brew Potion again.

This class'd work best in a campaign with low point buy. 20 is bad. 15 is good. 10 is great. 5 is perfect.

Remember you still get poison, and the homunculus will be immune.

It's probably one of those archetypes that fits much better for an NPC villain; your typical Dr. Frankenstein.

Melee alongisde your homonculus gives you a decent frontline.

You can also pick up Preservationist too and play a backline support/summoner thing pretty effectively.

Work on the manic laugh. Get a voice coach if necessary. it's all about standards.

Master the line. "IT'S ALIVE! AALIIIIVE!"

I think the hilarious part is that you can replicate the effect of Stoneskin at level 4 with Ablative Barrier unless there is something in the rules about converting damage types to one that hurts and one that your immune (Nonlethal)

Dip a single level in Mutagenic Mauler Brawler. Now you've got mutagens AND better weapons. Enjoy the endless tranq poison your Homunculus gets.

With a good DM, you could also add modifications to your homonculus since it is a construct, usine the rules of Craft Construct.
