Big change for me... Well, not so much big change as reverting to natural state after almost a year: my friends that were living with since July will be moving out next month to another city. I need to speak with them about details...
It has a big negative of having unfinished Pathfinder campaign that involves them as 1/3rd of the party and significant chunk of party dps (2-hander Paladin who always uses Power Attack, she annihilates most opposition, and she almost never uses smite evil...; and the super-heavy armored tower shield-bearing fighter, retrained from using glaive). I could look for replacement but a) most people I know are prefer playing rules-light, b) campaign is at 80-90% done anyway so should I really invite people for a finish that will lack a lot of context for them?

Eh, it's a prediction. Hoping I'm wrong. And Dragon speech software looks like it will be useful with one hand or two. Could be a good investment!You might be surprised at your typing speed. I was without use of my left index finger for a couple months, and found I could type at 75-80% of normal speed (which is usually about 85 to 90 wpm). You may be able to work around it, keeping the finger in a splint so you don't find yourself moving it involuntarily.
I can type fairly well for a while, then - because the ring finger is being held straight - my middle and pinkie fingers lock up and won't bend. My accuracy is terrible. I think having the finger gone would be better than having it there and splinted.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a wonder, though. I have found a way to have it automatically transcribe the audio files I've been working on. I have to go behind and punctuate it, but that's only one listen through the file for me instead of the usual 3. AND, I can correct and punctuate the bulk of it with Dragon. So it will boost my throughput.
Realize, too, that the initial injury was not only to my ring finger, but it also strained the neighbor fingers and two fingers on my right hand. I was miserable typing for a while. Now I have muddled along with this entire post without much trouble!
Aaaaaand... coffee is ready! Woo!

I used to think so. I didn't want to "sell out" "be corporate " "be a member of the herd". I swore I'd never wear a suit, and I'd forge my own path.
What I have discovered, Lo these 30 years past, is that you might not sell out in one way, but you end up selling out in another. You pay for your defiance in long hours and financial insecurity. You end up selling your life away in minimally-paid-for chunks. I might work outside, but I weild a trimmer or a mulch fork for 7 hours straight. I might make ok money without being in a cubicle, but I am parked in a parking lot at 2am.

Lest that post seem overly negative, let me assure those reading that I feel no regrets for my path. I just feel that there is a thread of hostility towards professional jobs in the culture, that somehow having one makes one less free. I used to feel that way, but now I feel that if you must work, you should work a normal schedule with a liveable wage. I don't even have the excuse of an artistic bent. I just didn't want to wear a tie :P.

On to happier subjects...Plants! I bought some lovely heirloom tomato plants today. Green, gold, and purple fruits. Red tomatoes are so 20th Century
I have a lovely day scheduled tomorrow, weather permitting. I will be traveling to that quintessential Cape village of Chatham, land of overpriced boutiques and Great White sharks. I have a friend up there with whom I have gamed in the past. She is currently in the throes of early motherhood, so all gaming is in abeyance until her progeny is a bit more self reliant. We'll hit the yard sales and push the wee bairn about the streets.

Any of you world builders out there want an excellent template for a tempestuous confederation of micro states do yourself a favor and read up on the Holy Roman Empire. Neither Holy, Roman, or an empire, it nonetheless defined politics in Central Europe for centuries. Nope.
Let's face it. Aside from a few folks, Americans are rather tone-deaf to history. It comes from living in a large, isolated recent country. We have history, but we are not surrounded by pieces of it like those aeglos referenced above in his hometown and Frankfurt. I live in one of the oldest European-settled areas, and I think the oldest building still standing around here dates to 1670. You can likely rent houses in Europe that old without too much of a problem.
Plus our culture is very forward-facing. It's all about the now, not the then. Heck, we barely covered WWI in school in the 80s. I'm sure they are glossing over WWII at this point.
Like aeglos also mentioned at a previous time, he lives in a house that has belonged to his family for generations. I don't even know where my grandparents grew up, let alone what the house looked like.

The only place I learned European history was in French class, where we learned French history in French. US history education is pretty sad.
