Halfling Outrider

Advice

How would you build a halfling outrider? Paladin? Cavalier? Fighter? Something else?

I'd probably start with Order of the Paw Cavalier, or possibly hunter depending on how rustic the area he was outriding for was.

Fighter kind of runs into the problem of having to go out of your way to get a mount that can keep up as you level. Paladin's certainly an option but waiting til level 5 to get your cool mount kind of stinks.

If there is a guide let me know.
My next Character I want to make a small race to play with a mount and have some fun!

I'm not familiar with the term "outrider"--what are looking for in a mounted character?

You can go multiple ways with this. Your mount can be a plain old transport device while all the focus is on you, or your mount could be the star while you hide on its back and direct it.

The class guides should all be listed in this thread. There's one specifically for cavalier, but some of the others might have mounted combat in them.

as a rider you'd need some way to get a reliable mount.
There's a feat chain to get a mount.
For Classes that can get a mount you have
Sorcerer, Cavalier, Druid, Hunter, Ranger, Cleric, Inquisitor, Oracle, Paladin, Brawler, Barbarian, "summoner", Bloodrager, Warpriest.

So if you can explain what you want your guy to do we can help you pick a class, or if you already choose a class we can help make it work.

Not much on guides for mounted combat...in my extremely limited downtime I have been writing one and its no where near complete.

First you playing PFS or Home game?

You can click my avatar to get an idea of what feats and such you might need. Tho I do regret a few gear choices that I would change if I could (PFS rules).

The main thing is Pick your Mount. Most classes have extremely limited choices. Some Archetypes expand this list. But if your playing PFS you are limited to the exact animals a class lists. That is why my avatar is a Beastmaster Ranger. I wanted to ride Giant Gecko to climb walls and run along walls/ceilings to open more options for charge lanes inside dungeons. With the added benefit of almost never needing to dismount. If I am dedicating so many feats to a style of combat I'm a player who likes to make sure I am getting full use of my resources.

If your playing in a Home game see if the DM is ok with opening up the mount selections so you can just play the class you want to play instead of having to go with a class purely based on the animal list.

If I could have a Giant Gecko or dire bat/Roc/Giant Bird on any class:
Cavalier would be my main choice (order of the sword)
Paladin would be my second choice
Ranger or Barbarian would be my 3rd choice

My last choices:
Fighter (no animal companion and very crappy skills, saves and out of combat fun)
Hunter (Teamwork feats are very limited when dealing with Mounted combat)

If you don't want to be a Paladin you could consider 4 levels of Cavalier and the Horse Master feat to get a fully leveled Mount even if you multiclass. Beyond that you could use any class you'd like depending on what other abilities you want to have. I wouldn't count out at least some levels of Fighter since archery uses lots of feats and I think Outriders tend to use a lot of ranged attacks (if you want to be a mounted slinger that's probably just masochism, but you could make it work and even carry a shield for higher AC)

Liberty's Edge

Their also a 3.5 version that should be easy to convert.

I'm not sure what Fruian doesn't like about Mounted combat for Hunters. Pack Flanking +Ouflank +Paired Opportunists +Broken Wing Gambit, and Bodyguard+In Harm's Way all work better when you share a square with your AC, IMHO.

My halfling Outrider is a Duettist Bard with one level of Freebooter Ranger, riding a Flying Fox Mauler (w/Evolved Familiar[Reach]).)

Mauler familiar (at 3rd) opens up a lot of Outrider options. Bloodrager, Battle Shaman, Eldritch Guardian, Duettist Bard, Eagle Domain or Besmaran Reach Clerics, etc.

For a skirmisher style build those feats are great. I use them all on my hunters. Just I feel as a Hunter your better off the AC than on it. The hunter is really a pet class. The pet becomes the center for doing damage.

For mounted lancer and mounted archers the add very little. And I prefer lancer and archer over the skirmisher style. Mostly because how late in the game mounted skirmisher (the feat) come into play as well as that horrid trick riding feat tax.

I have nothing against a Hunter...I love them as a class. They are powerful and I do not want you to think I have a problem with them. Just when people think mounted combat its about Lancer or Archer more than its about skirimisher or trampler builds.

And when it comes to lancer its hard to argue the effectivness of challenge damage + spirited charge. The free feats you get from Order of the sword....and mounts str to damage. A lancer is all about getting a bigger +damage to multiply by 3.

In my experience, ranger and cavalier halflings are the best.
Ranger is better at archery, skills and fight with the super mount , that gets the favorite damage and hit. Also, free mounted skirmishes and reduce animal spell allow a large amount to stay medium, but with the +8 are....
Beastmaster ranger on a fix that is reduced to medium is.... Wow.
Carry companion also assist.

As for Cavaliers, I like 2 main builds.
Order of the sword, with emissary. Huge number of bonus feats, risky striker, power attack and the cavalier make you hit once and kill.
The other is order of the Dragon and helpful. Adding full plate protection to allies.

And I agree with furian, if by the book mounts? Ranger Beastmaster win, it won't top damage but will be the most fun.
If you take monstreous mount feat, cavalier is just as good.
