1) Old World Blues. Funny, fun, zany, and great backstory for the Mojave and all its deadly unique creatures.
2.) Honest Hearts. Simplistic, but fun. Joshua Graham is a badass.
3.) Dead Money. Call me crazy, but I actually like the Survival Horror-esque style. The gold is fun to smuggle out, and the pay-off for all the foreshadowing in Veronica's quest, Lucky Old Sun, and the BoS questline is great.
4.) Lonesome Road. Iunno. I found it to be pretty boring, and overall fairly short. The story stuff with Ulysses is the best part, but the actual DLC content just seems tacked on as an afterthought so you have somewhere to be when you're not hearing exposition. Not a lot of fun gameplay opportunities. I think the only enemies in the whole DLC are reskinned Raiders and way too many Deathclaws that you blow to pieces in one shot each by this level. I didn't really feel like I got my money's worth out of this one, of all the DLC. It's not even pretty or unique to look at, like the rest.

The thing that I most remember about Dead Money was right after finishing it, I stepped out of the BoS bunker and looked over the river. The sun was just rising, the sky was crystal clear blue, and I was alive. I was alive and out of that sadistic hell hole. I just stood there and watched the sun rise over the river. I doubt I have appreciated a virtual sunrise as much as that one.

Well, I loved Fallout: New Vegas! I'm still waiting to find out what Fallout 4's DLC is going to be, because I am so going to buy the season pass for it!
*Hint: the game save corruption is from the Repconn facility and/or the quest you get from there, which was never patched. :( *
My Fallout: New Vegas experience went something like this, albeit minus a lot of the various side quests and such.
*SPOILERS!!!*
1. Woke up in Goodsprings. Raided everyone's home to make a ton of caps. Did the quests and tore the Powder Gangers apart with my unique machete that I got from the DLC.
2. Went past the deathclaw quarry by running super fast, getting to New Vegas in record time with 1 stimpak and half a health bar left. Lots of stolen Nuka Cola and Mystery Meat from the quarry town and the shack in the middle of nowhere though! Did a lot of stuff, became a King (Reverse-pickpocketing The King's unique clothing as well,), became a Follower of the Apocalypse after gaining a boatload of EXP and reputation from turning in chems and medicine, broke the Atomic Wrangler's bank, got them a new roster of prostitutes, and then found out that I couldn't get in New Vegas proper yet.
3. Went northwest to get the fabled Alien Blaster after stocking up on stimpaks. Survived aliens with high-powered weaponry, but got torn apart by Cazadors. Reloaded in New Vegas.
4. Did the questline up until Primm. Got sidetracked and did Old World Blues, becoming the benevolent dictator of the Big Empty and an honorary brain-in-a-jar. Rocked my new FIDO gun and photon battle axe! I also kind of fell in love with my Stealth Suit MKII, but didn't everyone?
5. Got to Novac and wandered around until my character found himself in the Hell that was the Sierra Madre. I came out a rich, and overencumbered, man by doing the glitch where you can get all the gold bars.
6. After getting to New Vegas, I decided to investigate the Happy Trails Caravan thing, since I wanted to see what the hype regarding Joshua Graham was all about. He more than lived up to the hype and my friends and I now call him the Paladin of the Mojave after I put a suit of power armor on him when I aided him in wiping out the savages.
7. FINALLY got to New Vegas proper! Broke the banks, broke Benny's skull, and broke Mr. House's headball, in that order. After establishing myself as overlord of Vegas, I schemed with NCR and Legion for a while, running my own game under their noses.
8. Adventured and did all kinds of ridiculous crap, reaching the upper limits of level in New Vegas.
9. Betrayed Caesar's Legion and NCR simultaneously, making my own bid for power with an army of Securitrons at my back.
10. Finally did Lonesome Road DLC, as I heard it would make the best sense if it was done near the end of the game. I liked Ulysses' style a lot, so much so that I spared him after getting him on my side. I chose to bomb Caesar's Legion in the east and got an awesome set of armor, the Armor of the 88th Tribe, from the highly irradiated ruins.
11. Finally possessing enough caps, I purchased the mother of all weapons: the Esther fat man along with a few dozen mini nukes of various types. I was not disappointed with the cluster nukes (Whatever they were called!).
12. Having completed everything else, I assassinated Caesar, then began the final mission. I killed Lanius after filling him with enough bullets to take down a small army, then threw NCR's military leader from the Hoover Dam. I got the best ending, so yay! My kingslayer managed to establish the City of Sin as the shining beacon of the Wasteland after bathing the Mojave in blood. The Followers ended up hating my character, but meh, they fell in line.

To the discussion of DLC costs above, you can often get Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition (with all DLC) for something like $5 when it's on sale.
My rankings of DLC:
1. Old World Blues: A story beautifully rife with both 50s sci-fi humor AND some absolutely horrific experiences and realizations. Loved the scientists, loved the facility. There's just loads of story here and so much to discover. The enemies were TOUGH. This had the most fleshed out "world" and story, IMO. Bonus points for leaving you with a base you can teleport back to at any time, with full crafting stations, etc.
2. Dead Money: I loved the early game of it, where you REALLY had to fight to survive. The horror atmosphere was well done. Dog, Christine, and Dean were all very interesting companions and I fell in love with Christine particularly. It does get sloggy after awhile, though, and the vending machines start making things too easy too soon. The ending gets a bit buggy and was a bit sloppily coded (there's supposed to be an obvious way to deal with the Big Bad but trying to get it to work properly is a pain, and he's one of few NPCs coded as essential up until a certain point, which in New Vegas is telling they couldn't figure out how to set it up better in the time they had, given so few characters are essential). Even so, it is hella memorable, evokes a lot of strong feelings (my courier shot every radio she came across after she left the Sierra Madre, just in case...) and also has a great backstory to it. It gets bonus points for the fact that once you finish it, you can give Veronica a perk that makes her punch things even harder.
3. Honest Hearts: It overall is the best ENVIRONMENT in all of FNV, in terms of sheer visual beauty... although that's slightly marred by the fact that navigation is a pain. The story and characters are all decent, but not memorable in the way the above two are.
4. Lonesome Road. It's a boring, linear, extended Monty Haul dungeon crawl made all the worse because the only people you have to interact with are a robot that says "beep-boop" and a delusional idiot who blames you for all his problems and decides to try to randomly nuke s%** because of reasons. The backstory of the Divide isn't bad, but Ulysses makes me want to swallow bleach before listening to him talk anymore. Playing the DLC in order, Lonesome Road was especially a major letdown after how amazing Old World Blues was, and Ulysses especially a disappointment after the set up he got in that game. The samey destroyed landscapes are also really disappointing after the amazing environments in Honest Hearts and clever sci-fi twists in OWB. It has some fantastic loot--but so does Honest Hearts and OWB--and they even ruin that by having way too much of it and no way of safely stowing it all--especially since your robot companion gets taken from you (with any loot in his inventory) partway through. If I want to play a deadly dungeon with an unreliable pet so I can loot as much s@@$ as I want, I'll play Nethack.
(I know a lot of people take Ulysses at his word, that you did all this stuff at the Divide... and I don't get why people believe him--he's f~~!ing crazy! He TELLS you you do certain things but has no proof and you yourself can tell him you have no idea what he's talking about and NOT be lying. My personal theory is that Ulysses himself destroyed the Divide... he tells you he had the title of Courier Six before you took on that same job, and he keeps insisting it was "Courier Six" who destroyed the Divide. He says that it's "your home" -- Courier Six's home -- but also says it was HIS home and is angry "Courier Six destroyed his home." My theory was he (accidentally) wrecked it himself, couldn't live with it, and transferred guilt to the next person that took on his name. Of course the beauty of the Courier is he/she is a blank slate enough you can accept the blame if you want, but IMO Ulysses is punishing you for a crime he himself committed.... and ultimately lets you kill him because part of him is aware he's really the one who is guilty.

While all the "cool kids" are playing Fallout 4 right now, this thread got me to purchase FNV- Ultimate Edition and F3- Game of the Year edition last week. They should arrive this week.
I loved F1 and F2, but the fact that the newer games weren't turn-based put me off. Hopefully I'll like these games! If I do, I'll probably get F4 at some point down the line, once the expansions are out.
I asked about the DLCs because I wondered if they were fan-mods that were available.

Speech 100: You can *tell* the guys at the end they should just leave... and they do.
My only real gripe is that Speech seems to cover both gentle persuasion and intimidation...
Oh, and Cap'n? You owe your bomb-chucky bad self a trip to North Vegas.

NV is indeed a good place for you to start because it involves many of the creative team members who worked on 1 and 2. You won't get the turn-based feel, but the VATS system is an homage to 1 & 2's body-part targeting system and gives you an option to slow down when the realtime combat gets overwhelming.
Fallout 3 and 4 are definitely "Bethesda takes" but I also like what they did. 4's writing, even with typical Bethesda oversights, is much better than 3's (and 3's wasn't bad, just limited), and they did a great job with companions. And of course Bethesda does world-design fabulously well as always and that carries over into those games.
Fallout 3's world is actually larger than New Vegas, in terms of literal map-size, but New Vegas has more quests and discoverable locations.
As for free fan-mods, there are BUCKETS and Sharoth has a thread devoted to playing Fallout 3 and and New Vegas. I personally recommend the "New Vegas Uncut" series.

My speech is 13, I let Annabelle do my talking.
My last New Vegas playthrough was my "Blonde Bombshell" playthrough. Low intelligence, high Charisma, explosives expert.
She DOES talk first, but if she doesn't like what she hears (or possibly doesn't understand what she hears), THEN Annabelle comes out.

Did you get it for the PC or the console?

I went into the Divide, did not get too far found ED-E, then got swarmed by sentry bots and bit it, sadly I forgot to save as my recent incursions vs the Powder Boys had left me with an unhealthy sense of bravado, so back to the beginning of the bunker for me. :-)
Next time I save more often, also I'm about 8 levels under the recommendation.

New Vegas was my favorite. Really holds the "feel" of 1&2. Part 3 has the Bethesda feel all over it, and what I've seen of part 4 does as well.
Agreed - I like NV the best, though I may be biased because I played it before FO3. One of my disappointments with FO4 is that it just feels so much like a redo of FO3. New Vegas feels distinct and different from FO3. FO4 feels more like FO3 2.0 and less like an entirely new Fallout game.

Question about the lonely road I'd ever known, I'm a drifter that was born to roam.
I don't regret that
The armory bunker right when you get out of the silo. Is that where you get the Red Glare gun or whatever. Just wanna know if I should dump some ranks into lock picking.
The experience comes in piles on the lonely road.
| DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |
Red Glare IIRC is in the second area past the bunker. It is on top of a roofless building---you will know because there will be one of those fiend-ghoul things shooting rockets at you with it. You'll have to climb up there and there will be Red Glare, some rockets, and some additional loot. I do not believe you need to unlock anything to get to it.
However, I would strongly recommend putting some points in lockpicking as there are a LOT of locked containers and doors in Lonesome Road.
| DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |
That should be more than adequate for most of what you need, with the books to help you with a master lock you don't want to leave behind.
When I played my explosives run, I preferred Annabelle and the mercenary grenade rifle (which should NEVER have been starting gear, even in a pack). Plasma grenades in a pinch.
Apply the landmines TO the deathclaws, cap'n, it works out a lot better that way. The deathclaws on that big bridge are particularly susceptible. :)

And really, who doesn't want to look like a storm trooper with a duster. :-)
The Legion...
The NCR Rangers have some "duster over armor" looks that are a bit easier to lay hands on, but nowhere near as good.

The version in Honest Hearts (Desert Ranger Combat Armor) only has one point lower DT, and is pretty easy to get.

Storm troopers are awesome.
Dusters are awesome.
How is this a problem?
It's like, if there was plate mail with a duster over it, that would be my next Pathfinder character!
I agree.
Not a problem for me, that's for sure.
Just spent 15 minutes (real time) raining death on the Divide.
Now I'm waiting for my daughter to get done with her field biology club. Think I'd rather be back on the bridge with the Deathclaws.
