Hi.
This may be a dumb question but I really need to have this clear.
First. Where or how I can take or calculate the Base Attack for a character?
I know that each class has its own table with the ammount of Base Attack/level, but, can be also modified for another effect or formula?
I've read that this Base Attack is given by the table, and this number is added in a d20 roll in order to make a successful attack; then, the Base Attack plus Str. Mod. are added to the Hit Die and we have the final damage (in close combat).
For example: I have a lvl 2 Fighter, so he have a +2 Base Attack, and a Str. Mod. +4 with a sword with 1d6
If he want to make an attack, he first will roll 1d20 + 2; if he success, then make a 1d6 + 6 roll. Is this correct?
...
Now. I bought the beginner box. This have some characters sheets, in specific Valeros (fighter).
He has +1 to Base Attack, +3 for Str. Mod. and 1d8 sword. In the character sheet, in G section this says:
Attacks and Weapons:
Initiative: 4 + 2 = 6
Attack C/C 1 + 3 = 4
Range Attack 1 + 2 = 3
Weapon: Sword
Base attack +5; Damage 1d8 + 4; and more stuff...
How He has the +5 to Base Attack? In this way, I understand that he first add the Base Attack with the Mod (to get the 4) and then add the Base Attack AGAIN to this number to get the 5?
This situation is very confusing for me and my friends.
I'll appreciate your answers
PS: Please sorry for my english, I'm spanish speaker.

hi there no worries everyone has questions about the game.
so first of all the base attack bonus is directly tied to how much health you get a lvl all classes that get a d10 or better hit die have a good base attack bonus, d8 hit die get average base attack, and d6 hit die get bad base attack bonus.
base attack bonus is used to calculate your 1.to hit with melee weapons and ranged weapons. 2. your combat maneuver bonus and defense.
all melee weapons follow this formula for hit and damage
to hit:
base attack bonus + strength + weapon enhancement + feats/other
to damage:
the weapons damage die + strength (1.5 strength if you 2 handing it) + weapon enhancement + feat/other
all ranged weapons follow this formula for hit and damage
to hit:
base attack bonus + dexterity + weapon enhancement + feats/other
to damage:
the weapons damage die + weapon enhancement + feat/other

so for example lets take valeros the fighter
valeros is lvl 1 which means he has a base attack bonus of +1
if he wants to attack that dirty goblin thats making making fun of him he has to roll to hit.
since valeros has a strength score of 16 (or +3) his to hit is
1 (base attack) +3 (strength) = +4 so he rolls a d20 and adds 4 to his roll.
now if he hits he gets to do damage so he rolls a d8 for his long sword
and adds his strength mod so 1d8+3
(now if hes using his long sword with both hands he gets to use his strength and a half 1.5 strength)
so for the damage roll he'd roll 1d8+4 (1.5x3 rounded down)

I don't know anythign about the beginner box but there's an old thread querying the Valeros discrepancy, if it helps you

is the feat weapon focus?
if so the calculation would be
1d20+7 (2 base attack, 4 str mod and weapon focus gives 1)
*don't forget that a masterwork weapon gives you another +1 to hit
so if your weapon is also masterwork it would be 1d20+8
and the damage calculation would be
1d12+6 (with two handing it that's 1.5x4 so 6)
and off with the goblins head haha.

So, suppose that I have a warrior class, lvl 2 (+2 Base Attack) and Str. Mod +4 (due to 18 Str.) and a Feat that gives him +1 to Base Attack with axes (a 1d12 axe).
How much is the Base Attack and damage, for meelee, in this case?
Base Attack is still 2, but when you're attacking:
+7 to hit (All those bonuses added together.)
Damage of 1d12 + 6 (Strength modifier of 4, multiplied by one and a half because you are, I assume, using the axe two-handed.)
