As a geophysicist, I get a lot of things coming through my email that are of little interest to anyone outside a few specific fields. Sometimes, however, I get something that everyone can relate to, and even more rarely, something that has the potential to be really awesome for PFS and Pathfinder as a whole!

(Name the features on Pluto and its moon Charon - the public news story related to this train of thought.)

NASA's New Horizons probe is approaching Pluto and Charon, and NASA has a public campaign to name the features of these bodies. As I looked, I saw items from Tolkien, Pratchett, and other fictional worlds had been nominated. As such, I thought to myself, "wouldn't be awesome if Absalom or Pharasma or Skyreach became actual places on another (dwarf) planet!" and so, I bring this to you:

Nominate a Name! - If we all come together as Pathfinder players and GMs and suggest names from Golarion...who knows! Maybe we'll actually play a role in naming a mountain or crater or other feature on another world!

/science geeking, and back to your regularly scheduled fantasy RPG geeking :)

*applauds idea*

I'm glad I'm not the only one excited about Pluto.

You've been following updates on Ceres, too, I take it?

I will nominate: Star rise Spire

I like Star Rise Spire. Or Eye of Abendego?

Dark Archive

There might be legal issues with copywrite terms from Golarion. But it sounds like a cool idea. we should throw the names of some hellknight citadels into the mix.

It might be ok, since we got the Greedo Catfish.

Dementor Wasps as well.

The IAU has already decided the naming conventions for Plutonian features. and fictional names and from what I recall, none of the others fit. Plutonian features are to be named for Underworld dieties of of various Earth cultures. I assume top runners will be names such as Pele', Hel, Hades, Osiris, and the like.

oh well thats a shame

i can understand the underworld bit but i would have thought they would open it up to fiction

wait a second i just checked and that is simply one of the options

it could even be named after great explores

oh maybe something named after the Decemvirate they arent explores themselves but they maintain a group of them

you can name it after artists and authors who have envisioned our explorations of the land, sea and space maybe James L. Sutter for his work on distant worlds

also doesent this belong in pathfinder rpg general discussion

although on the other hand its explore focused so maybe it does fit here

If there are any towering mesas, I nominate Pharasma's boneyard.

Liberty's Edge

I'm nominating Boneyard.

I nominated Eando Kline

Guys, nominate Absalom. It's also a literary reference, which could make things a bit easier/more likely to go through.

I too will nominate Desna.

Also is it just me or did anyone think this thread was about spelljammer upon looking at the title?

Truth be told, my first thought was Muppets in Space :-)

This is AWESOME.

If they are going to use Osiris, then you have one country on Golarion out of the way.

Forth Street

What? it's a legitimate name for a place

Underworld? Okay. Orv.

Update!
(and in a funny way, "raise" thread!)

The first named maps of Pluto and Charon have been made public, and while nothing blatantly Pathfinder-specific has made it, two things that also exist in the Golarion/PFS campaign setting did:

Sun Wukong

Cthulhu

Shadow Lodge

Cthulhu Region? Meh, it's a location, should have gone with R'lyeh. Or, considering that it's Pluto....Yuggoth.

Naming scheme for Pluto wrote:
space missions and spacecraft; scientists and engineers; historic explorers; and underworld locales, beings, and travelers.
Naming scheme for Charon wrote:
fictional explorers and travelers; fictional origins and destinations; fictional vessels; and exploration authors, artists, and directors.

Savith-Yi could work for Charon, perhaps?

Heh.

You could have nominated Asmodeus.
Maybe next time.
