That hate is strong against Lucas with this one.
I saw this movie tonight. I didn't go see it because I WANTED to, but because I owed my kid a movie, and this is what she chose.
Before I saw it, I was with everyone else who thought this movie looked horrendous. I thought this movie was probably going to be one of the worst this year, if not worse than a C grade movie.
I wasn't expecting much at all.
So...within the first 5 minutes, it felt all my fears were validated. The intro seemed cringe worthy...and then the singing started, and kept going...and going...and going...and then it hit me.
They marketed this movie completely wrong.
This movie probably would work perfectly as a stage play. That's basically how it's set up. Like a stage musical (almost opera, yes, there's that much singing in it), almost like a broadway (modern with rock songs and other items) has them these days. (the term I think many use is a jukebox musical).
The start still isn't great, but the movie grows on you. IN fact, by the end, it actually was quite good...IF you give it a chance and see it for what it is.
However, the advertising on this one was WAAAAY off. If you try to see it as some typical Disney fare, I imagine you may hate it.
I can't say it's my favorite movie of all time, but I'd say if you like that modern rock musical vibe, it actually isn't bad. It's extremely predictable, but the reason to go see it is for the music with the story as a background.
Cummings kills it in this movie (kills as in perhaps the best singer of the lot). Some of them aren't great singers, but then it would be like what you'd hear at many professional (but not the extreme tier of professional perhaps) musicals.
It would rock so much better on a second run circuit as a musical on stage with the stage props more than this film, in my opinion.
For those who get this film, I could definitely see it becoming somewhat of a cult classic.
Unfortunately, I think those who have hated Lucas over the prequel trilogy will not let the hate go and will trash this movie any chance they get. Furthermore, the way they advertised this I think did this film a disfavor...in a MAJOR way. I think some will go to see it as advertised and come out wondering what the heck they just saw...and hate it.
Finally, in some ways it really seems to be the music first (so if you don't like the music, that's an additional reason people will hate it) and the story second. If you go for the story...you may also be disappointed to a degree.
I really liked it though. My little girl loved it. I think many girls who love fairies, irregardless of the music and such, may like it.
People probably are going to compare it to epic (and I would too from the commercials, but not after seeing it). It's nothing like Epic, and in my opinion, this is actually a better movie. I don't think people are going to give it a chance though.
Yes, I went in, cringed at the first 5-15 minutes, and it grew on me till I actually liked the movie. Hopefully others will give it a chance (I am a rarity and can have my mind changed...most who go in with my attitude probably don't have an open mind I imagine).
Just thought I'd bring this movie up, because I think it deserves a chance now that I've seen it. I think it's a pity how people are going to rake it over the coals when in truth, for musicals, this is perhaps one of the better ones I've seen on film in the past 2 or 3 years (so nothing compared to the great musicals of yore, but it's really not a bad musical either in my opinion).
Edit: I don't consider it as great as Frozen, but of the musical types of movies that this is, it's a better one from the past few years...so don't go expecting a Frozen of this one either...but it's soundtrack has more of a rock/theme appeal (none original...used from other rock star songs) than Frozen did.

Because you are using an idiom pointing out another idiom or non-standard English?
This is funny. There are many other grammatical errors in my post, what's ironic is pointing out the non-standard English (as per most dictionary definitions today, recognizing it as a word, but a non-standard word) with another non-standard statement (recognized as a different sort of non-standard, where an idiom is not to be taken literally, the other non-standard is one that is not accepted in professional writing, but BOTH are understood by convention).
I can only reply by saying...yes...I snuck it in (and yes, the snuck is on purpose here too!).
:)
Sounds sort of like an animated Rock of Ages with fairies.
It's in that same type of vein, but I think with more music and even less of a story to follow. The story really takes a backseat in this one (strange magic).

I almost had to be bodily dragged into going to see Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailers had me convinced that the movie would be little more than a series of bad jokes that would wear out in the first 15 minutes, and send me to sleep 5 minutes later. It's seldom that I wound up enjoying a movie so much when I had such bad trailer impressions.

Uuugh. I'll check it out when it comes out on DVD, but...I mean, I'm really not that picky, I tolerated Rio 2 and Epic, but this movie looks Epically bad. Even accounting for bad trailers...Frozen and Tangled had 'bad trailers'. This is more than just an ordinary bad trailer. :P
It was marketed as a Disney movie? If it was marketed as anything, it's Blue Sky. Take your kids to see Paddington or Big Hero Six. Spare them this.
