So, is the question "Why is small cat an option, when there is big cat?"
Maybe just for flavor, but there are advantages to both sizes. Sprint is a pretty cool ability allowing the small cat to charge up to 500 feet once per hour. Pounce would be worth more most of the time though. Honestly, if it wasn't for pounce they'd be roughly equivalent. Pounce is just too good though.

I can't see any reason to start with a small cat when you could start with a big cat
"Big cat" and "small cat" are different creatures in Pathfinder, with different stats and different abilities.
If you want a big cat, go with a big cat.
But, the caveat is that your reasons for choosing a big cat are just as valid as someone else's reasons for choosing a small cat (or a Swan, or an Elk, or a whatever else).
In other words, if/when you encounter another player with a not-"big cat", don't be that guy that thinks your choice was "better" than theirs.

Here's a Pathfinder Animal Companion guide, ordered by damage output and whether it advances at 4th or 7th level. I don't really understand your question. Yes, you may choose a medium-size Big Cat as an animal companion at 1st level.
Which animal companion is best for you depends on what you want it for. If you are a medium-size character wishing to maximize damage output then Big Cat is a reasonable option, although not the best.

I'm sure it's a bit late to respond now, but. Communication is not my strong suit, sorry about that. I wasn't trying to stir up anything, and never do. sometimes I just need to understand the whys and wherefores.
Looking at the druid guides there are alot of animal companions that are colored red and look as though no one in their right mind would take one. there are some that are purple saying 'take me, take me'. so I ask myself (and you guys) basically, why doesn't everyone take the 'best' pet. so my question was, "is there some reason why everyone doesn't take tiger, because it seems too good to be true that I can start a new character with a kick butt animal companion.
I take it the answer was "yes", and can leave it at that. It seems sometimes people are trying to uberize things and some people were thinking I was after a large tiger to start with.
sorry for my miscommunication .

Not everyone takes the best mechanical option. Many people take things that would be appropriate for their character. It is a roleplaying game, after all.

Tiger is good, but it is not the best.
If you are on an adventure on a boat, or in a small natural cave, tiger is gonna have many problems. These are spots where other companions are really good.
Climbers and medium size are good for underground.
Fliers are great for battles at sea.
In town a wolf is less noticeable as a wild animal, horse blends even better. A huge cat stands out, a lot.
All depends on what you/group/campaign is doing.

The Atomie?
It's a fey creature. You can't choose it as an Animal Companion.
The Leadership feat is what you'd want to take.
As for Diminutive-sized gear, there are technically no rules in Pathfinder for pricing out weapons smaller than small-sized, but most people just use the chart for unusual armor sizes to determine the price of unusual weapon sizes.

Your error is in relying on 'guides' for building 'characters'. If you are trying to build a mechanical tool for succeeding in some fictional challenge, then sure, find a guide that builds you the best tool. But if you are trying to create a character to play a role playing game with, then choose the companion, abilities, and actions that your envisioned character would do, given his upbringing, training, history, environment, and experiences.

Because it's a tabletop ROLE playing game. Not some brainless PvP MMO.
