How much would you pay for a voidworm?

Advice

So, long story short, my PCs have gotten their hands on 30 to 40 voidworms, and the current plan is to sell them to a magic university they're on relatively good terms with.

Voidworms are known to work as familiars, and they have: blindsense 30 feet, constant detect law, fast healing, immunity to acid, resistance to electricity and sonic, constant freedom of movement, moderate fortification, immunity to polymorph effects they don't want, a host of SLAs including commune, and the ability to change shape. The downside is their personality, which can be likened to an extreme case of ADD and solipsism.

Pseudodragons are 200gp a pop, have telepathy and better blindsense, and are tiny dragons. Parrots, falcons, and other such valuable mundane birds are 40 to 50 gold pieces. As far as I can tell, a voidworm would be somewhere between these two, but I'd like more opinions on this.

125gp maybe? Their personality does seem like an issue, but I figure any Chaotic Neutral caster with some patience can handle it.

Pseudodragons do not have SLAs; as such, I'd say the void dragons are worth more than Pseudodragons.

As they are *creatures of the moment* they probably cannot be trained, and thanks to their Freedom of Movement, caging or restraining them might be difficult.

Then how are they ever familiars?

I usually pay 6-7 silver pieces for a steamed voidworm and bun with brown mustard and grilled onions. Goes great with a nice pint of dwarven ale on a spring day.

"Debate rages as to whether or not the strange and capricious creatures called voidworms are actually proteans at all. To the wizards and sorcerers who summon them as familiars, the answer seems obvious—these tiny dwellers of Limbo have all the requisite racial traits of proteans, down to their serpentine shapes. Yet the established protean castes find such claims outright insulting, claiming instead that it is such acts of conjuration that call voidworms forth from the raw stuff of Limbo, giving them shape and life according to the spellcasters' expectations, and that these lesser beings are but pale reflections of their formidable kin."

I'm not sure why these Voidworms would be used as familiars, as wizards are supposed to reach out into limbo and create them from out of raw chaos.

If anyone at the university tells my PC her voidworms are too "stale" to buy, they're getting slapped with a couple.

If she's not getting money, she might as well use that confusion power for wholesome PC entertainment.

You should try making them the cool new thing.
Start a trend and people will pay anything for them.

...That is ...actually possible.

Thanks!

Try selling them as bait for "voidfish." You never know. Maybe you'll get lucky.

No prob.
Magic teenager school, right?
See if you can get them to take on different colors.
Every teenager wants the popular thing in a different color from everyone else's.

That was actually one of the options I considered. Threaten to return them unless the proteans pony up.

Just don't let them pay in protean money. That stuff inflates and deflates like crazy, and the values may change from 1 million to 1 in the time between you ask for a price and when you actually pay for it.

Ah, but they could turn into kittens. Or scorpions. Really, since it gets its pick of 2 tiny animals to turn into, it could be both, and randomly change while you are cuddling it.

Best answer right here.

They're flippant, whimsical annoyance incarnate. With magical abilities. At least if they're your familiar, they won't amuse themselves at your detriment (too much). Ssila'meshnik help you if you've got a veritable chorus of them and they decide to have "fun".

Threaten to release them on someone else or at least on their property unless your demands are met. The voidworms might happily help you write the blackmail note.

Are you even allowed to sell them? They're sentient beings, capable of speech and independent thought - it could qualify as slavery, dependant on local laws and customs.

I would advise against letting them help. Every single letter of the note will be cut from a different magazine, and it will vary wildly not only be in different fonts, but they will be from different languages as well. Try having it make sense when katakana get thrown in there.
