I will admit there's a part of me confident enough to be nervous about round 2... If I got past that... yeah I feel like I could make it to top 4. I've designed dozens of monsters and as a GM hundreds if not thousands of encounters.

But yeah, I'd surely be surprised. Especially seeing what the competition looks like.
Hello little weapon, it's nice to meet you this late in the dance.
On a side note, there's an item I think deserves to do really well but won't, and I wish the designer had taken two minutes to re-format his paragraphs to avoid the issue.

Thunderfrog wrote: So is anyone feeling good enough about their item to say "I'm totally in the top 32?" Do you know what I'm confident about?
There are more than 32 top-notch items in this contest.
It can be really easy to take a negative view and say "well, I wasn't picked, what did I do wrong?" or "what external factors skewed the judges or voting process so that my item wasn't picked?" or "what unfair, specious reason made people fail to react to my item the way I wanted them to?" or even (if one is of sufficiently melodramatic bent) "WHY? WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE LIVE IN?"
But there are a set of items that will not make the Top 32 that are indistinguishable (as much as one can make such a statement about subjective quality) in "goodness" from the items that do. This is not to take away from the winners at all - the fact that they've earned their spot doesn't mean that others couldn't.
Sometimes, I think, you can do everything right and still not get the results you want. And sometimes that's not for any "good" reason. Or indeed, for any reason at all.
And that's fine too.
Enjoy your work, do your best,
Send it to the world, let the matter rest,
Whatever comes, do not be distressed,
De gustibus non disputandum est.
Thunderfrog wrote: So is anyone feeling good enough about their item to say "I'm totally in the top 32?" My confidence has been on the worst rollercoaster ride of my life. Or at least in the Top 3. At first I was kind of hesitant - last year didn't go so well - but then I made it past the cull, and I thought I absolutely had it in the bag, but then I saw how varied people's keep lists were.
Let's just say that I'm somewhat confident about Top 100, but not at all about Top 32.

Seriously: it's posts like that, which make me so very happy I joined this contest.
Dispite being a first timer to the forums, AND being an aspiring designer. I feel like the large amount of experiance that people on this forum have, I feel like an equal.
Like I am contending on equal footing. And To be Entirely honest, I STILL think in some small part of my head, I got a fair shake at getting top 32. Do I expect to, no. I'm braced for that.
Do I think I have a chance. Yes. Do I think everyone here is thinking like that on some level yes.
Just becuase my confidence is shaken... doesn't mean I think any less of myself. I just think much greater of everyone around me. The experiance, the skill, the attention to detail I have whitnessed in this competition is amazing.
It wasn't the cake-walk I expected it to be, and that's what shook me up.
*evil grin* Next year, though, next year... I have expecations. That, was my initial issue, I didn't know what to expect. Superstars, yes... but just what is superstar. And now... I know. And knowing, is half the battle.
Saw my item once more post-cull, now I can sleep.
You know what I have been seeing alot of today? Items from my keep pile going against each other! I don't want to play favorites, I like them all.

Last year I thought I didn't stand a chance and made top 32, this year I feel pretty good about my chances, so I probably won't even make top 100.
Quibble you are a cool dude, can we be friends?
Made Top 32 in '12, made the Top 89 in '13, and survived the cull in '14 but didn't make the Top 100 list. With the downward slope my submissions have been on for the last couple years, kinda worried I was going to get culled this year.

NOTE: I cannot actually do a credible Zoidberg voice. It is one of my greatest regrets.
Sir William wrote: Thunderfrog wrote: So is anyone feeling good enough about their item to say "I'm totally in the top 32?" Not anyone who made a ring (at least after the lack of rings in people's keep lists).
As for my own chances, I think it a slight chance. I think an item that commented on as a "pit crew" member has a solid chance. I wouldn't be too sure. There are at least two rings that I would not be at all surprised to see in the top 32.

[Keep Item] vs [Keep Item]
That was ugly.
Every year there are at least a handful of items where I have a serious disconnect with the judges on either side as in items I thought were certain top 32 (Boulder throwing kit, Amber Robes, heck my item) and items I'm like what were they thinking (not using names because that's rude.)
There is way more subjectivity to how you look at an item. I for one would take a cloak of the bat* over a +3 cloak of protection any day that ends in a y while others would rather have a +1 cloak of protection over the cloak of the bat*.
*make it up against a cape of the mountebank and I'll have a real conundrum!
I'm the same, though most of the items where I wonder how they were left out do make the top 100. So that's some comfort.

I would be astonished and delighted to wind up in the top 100 (or 89, or whatever). Heck, I'm astonished and delighted to have survived the cull. This is the first time I've ever tried to design a magic item and not only did I choose a category that's apparently unpopular but I also, upon reviewing my text file, appear to have neglected to close a parenthesis (I may have caught that in the actual posted version, hope so anyway). This reviewing and voting and discussion part has been very entertaining and educational, though, so I hope to do better next year.

I think that's a good point. I think it's worth remembering that the stubborn nail is in Ultimate Equipment while a number of items that made the Top 32 that year aren't. It takes some luck to get in.

Thunderfrog wrote: So is anyone feeling good enough about their item to say "I'm totally in the top 32?" Heck no! I feel good enough to think I've got a chance--I made it past the cut, at least!--but I know of at least two flaws in my submission and I think one of them is enough to lose me votes if I'm up against another weak keep item without a comparable flaw. The math is balanced but it might be a little too fiddly for a certain type of voter to deal with. And after doing some 750ish votes, I think my wordcount is too high to make it in.
I think the concept is pretty strong at least!
At the moment I'm keeping my fingers crossed for top 100, but hey, I wasn't expecting anything out of this, so any good result is gravy at this point.

I actually think that I've got a pretty good shot. Which is surprising to me as I'm usually fairly pessimistic about these sorts of things.
We'll all know pretty soon.
