The 2014 Longsword Finals make the cross-guard look too dangerous to the sword owner.

So wait, not only accross an entire planet but accross an entire GALAXY there's only one design for a light saber?
No way. that thing looked awesome. If only western sword fighting styles get some love... (though i think count douku was getting some fencing on)
You forget Yoda, who in the prequels exhibited an impressive traditional Roman sword fighting techniques.

In reference to all the sliding your hand down and cutting off your fingers... If you pay close attention there actually is a hand-guard where the saber-guard projects. Therefore you still have something to block your hand from sliding down onto the blade.
Personally, I originally thought it was a little silly; however, the more I got a chance to check it out, the more I like it. I'm interested to see something new and different. I just hope it is done well!

Phrik, some forms of Cortosis, and Mandalorian Iron (aka Beskar).

You guys are arguing out of ignorance. Lucas made a Special Edition Teaser Trailer which shows they only scratched the surface of the new design in the first trailer (Freehold, you've seen this).
Note the subtle difference at 0:47 seconds in. It's a dramatic improvement over even Darth Maul's design.

Hey, check it out: Lucas made his own epVII movie and never released it !
Now, that is a Light Saber --> -= LUCAS epVII Light Saber =-

The thing is crossguards weren't monofilament daggers that could effortless go through the hands gripping the hilt, they were solid round pieces simply designed to stop a blade.
But what about your forearms if you spin it really fast, like Jedi's do.
I can do that with a claymore without hitting myself, and I'm a clutz.

Are you saying you can stand there all alone and do this? Or are you saying you do this when an enemy is pressuring you with trying to chop your head off? Because those situations are drastically different.

Well, to be far to Abrams I've tried designing a few lightsabers and it is kinda hard to make them distinctive.
The claymore look is different from any other lightsaber we've seen in the movies and it does stand out.

This is good evidence a cross-guard on a light saber is a poor choice.
Watching the 2013 America Finals it struck me having a cross-guard makes binding easier, and transferring into jiu jistu, rolling on the ground situations more likely. Rolling around with a light saber seems more accident prone than not especially when you have laser cutting cross-guards.

I'm going to go on a limb and say that he's never actually been in battle with a broadsword as his main weapon. Also, he's probably not a force wielding jedi with a plasma sword. The force part being a major game changer.
Edit: minor correction.

Well you wouldn't do that fancy spinning thing with ANY weapon in a battle, crossguard or not.
Does the weapon look cool? Hell to the freaking yes.
Is the weapon so unrealistic that it falls into the double sided light saber/chainsaw chucks uncanny valley of "it would never work"? Absolutely not. Like any real world weapon I'm sure there's a lot of upsides and downsides to the thing that would have people comparing their relative values

Just watched the Official trailer. Looked clunky, cheap/B grade and kind of silly. Bad cuts to poorly chosen scenes.
The International Trailer is far more polished and though it neglects the cross-guarded lightsaber scene, is much better.
As for the crossguard, lightsabers stop when they meet, as in parties and blocks. No reason the crossguard shouldn't function perfectly. Come on, it's a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. A trained user should be able to keep from dismembering themself.
And, if you didn't get the hint by the fact that the crossguard blades just out after an oh-so-dramatic pause, they are like, rilly cool.
Compared to a soccerball robot, hardly the worst. I liked the flickering flame like crossguard I sort of see for a fraction of a second on my smartphone's YouTube.

I got the impression from the trailer that Mr. Lightclaymore-wielder was a Sith. So I imagine that the lightcrossguard was at least as much for Intimidation checks as it would be for defense... like Darth Maul's double-lightsaber.
Also, while I am a huge fan of Benadryl Quidditchmatch's work, his voiceover here just doesn't work for me... trying way too hard and it's a complete airball.
And I still like soccerball droid. At least until he goes full Jar-Jar.

It was a red blade. Going by past movie conventions, means it was a Sith weapon.
GreyWolfLord |
The crossguard could work if you made the modification of having BOTH a metal crossguard and a lightsabre crossguard (the first being closer to your hand).
It does.
Jedi who would be dead with a saber hilt like that...
Ben Kenobi (Darth Maul and his fight in Phantom Menace)
Luke Skywalker AND Darth Vader (Empire Strikes Back)
Mace Windu (Revenge of the Sith...of course he died shortly after that anyways).
Charles Scholz |
I like it.
Think about this. How many times have you seen a jedi/sith battle in which they press their lightsabers together and their faces and bodies are only 6" apart. The lightsaber crossguard would keep that sort of thing from happening.
Skeld |
I was neither excited about it not disappointed. It's just "different." If the Sith wield different weapons from the Jedi, then I'm ok with it.
As an aside:
The International Trailer is far more polished and though it neglects the cross-guarded lightsaber scene, is much better.
I watched that and I thought it's the fakiest-looking trailer I've seen in a long time (I normally avoid "fan-made" stuff). If it's a real trailer, then my soul weeps for Star wars because it looks lame.
Also, more of the X-Wings flying across the body of water. I could watch that movie all day.
Lastly, then the thing with the Millennium Falcon loopty-loop camera-chase was slightly vertigo-inducing. I hope there's not too much of that in the final movie or they're going to give people motion sickness.

It is also a fake trailer, as it happens.

Also, how many lightsabre duels do the swords go high and they use their fist to punch the other person in the face? With that crossguard. fight's over, you win. It looked badass.
And I really hope the trailer is fake, because that soccer-ball-droid looks terrible....worse than the shoe that made it into one of the Rebel Armada shots in one of the original movies.

Nonsense, that droid complies with all the new Galactic Alliance regulations for ecologically-friendly, low-power robotics.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but this is not the first lightsaber with a crossguard in Star Wars canon... in fact, it is called a crossguard lightsaber . The one in the trailer just has one more quillion, and both aren't angled.
The saber actually makes me think of classic Knights, which is what the fighting style of Episodes 4 through 6 simulated as opposed to the flashier ones in the Prequels. And if they're going the route of the classic movies, then I'm fine with that. As dynamic as the action was in the Prequels, the Classic movies fight scenes seemed more practical to me. If they find a way to mix a bit of both styles, but do it in such a way as to not invalidate one or the other, that could be even more fun.

I think it's kinda neat.
I mean, the lightsaber is already a goofy ass weapon anyway that any normal person would probably kill themselves with just learning how to use.
Jedi have superpowers. Not much of a stretch that an only very slightly more impractical weapon is still perfectly wieldable by someone with whatever black magic Forcery is required to not lop off all your limbs with a lightsaber while twirling it around like a ninny to begin with.
yellowdingo |
I'm going with 'great'. It's entirely within character for a would-be Sith to run around with a way too elaborate saber.
Also, I really hope that Sith is Gwendoline Christie.
