Tiefling Sorcerers worth playing?

Advice

Silver Crusade

First off, I know that the only thing that makes a class worth playing is how much fun you have with it, but I was just looking at Tiefling magic-users because I recently got a miniature for one of them, and noticed that, despite everything, a tiefling who takes the Abyssal or Infernal bloodlines is, essentially, no more attuned to the Hells, Abyss, Evil Plane Of Player's Choice, because the Fiendish Sorcery class feature, just bumps them up to human standard. I mean, I know humans are right bastards, but are we really more attuned to the Forces of Darkness than a demon's whelp?

You can always get more out of Fiendish Sorcery by using the variant heritages such as Demon-Spawn, Div-Spawn, Kyton-Spawn, or Rakshasa-Spawn which give bonuses to Cha.

Sorcerers do have some value in this department but its CONSIDERABLY more narrow than humans. Humans with their favored class bonus is the king of sorcerers for that reason alone. So we got to find a niche. And that niche is making the most of the +2 dex Bonus. Scorching ray for example is given to you for free for one bloodline. Metamagic the heck out of that and other ranged spells and you have your edge over human.

Consider the [url=http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-tiefling]variant heritages]:

Demon-spawn: +2 Str, +2 Cha, -2 Int. Thematic and you're essentially up 2 Cha from a human, but the Str bonus isn't all that useful and the Int penalty possibly painful. +2 Perception is nice.

Div-spawn: +2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Int. Dex is good, -Int is bad, and thematically it's a bit weird. It's legal to take a Demon or Devil lineage though, though the GM might frown.

Kyton-spawn: +2 Con, +2 Cha, -2 Wis. Con bonus is pretty sweet. Wis penalty might be less painful than the Int penalty on the above options. Getting Web at level 1 is pretty sweet.

Rakshasa-spawn: +2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Wis. Disguise bonus could be handy to hide your race. Detect Thoughts SLA is nice too.

Note that you could use the cross-blooded sorcerer trick to go Demon/Devil+[Div/Kyton/Rakshasa], to glue the theme together a bit.

Unfortunately, I was hoping to play one in Pathfinder Society, so only the original Tiefling, none of the heritages, is available for play.

I like the prehensile tail tieflings can have. It lets you quickdraw scrolls and such.

Tieflings have a feat they can take for +2 Natural Armor bonus: Armor of the Pit, which is decent.

Darkvision is nice, when the lights go out.

And you have a cool tiefling miniature.

Sovereign Court

Everyone like the prehensile tail. Sorcerers might not be taking it though. +2 on effective Cha is a big deal after all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Considering there is no need to do large amounts of min/maxing in pfs play and you have an awesome miniature then it is a no brainer to go tiefling caster. Just roleplay the heck out of being a demon spawn and it being sooo much better than the boring mundane human casters.

Sovereign Court

The combination of some resistances, darkvision and generous stat adjustments, does mean you can lord it over the mundanes for a while.

Also, you can complain/brag that you're not a "Person" for various spell purposes. Stupid humanoidcentric spellcasting system.

Not true.

Don't play a tiefling! After all, they aren't the winningest race for Sorcs ever published in any game in the history of forever. /sarcasm

Or, Play what appeals to you. As long as it is not mechanically flawed (CHA12 Sorc?) and you have a good time playing, your friends should be glad to have you along :) It's about what you want, not what wins :) (Caveat: As long as you don't want a boat anchor designed to weigh down the party...)

Silver Crusade

Okay, I must have misread something because last time I checked the additional resources, I could have SWORN it said that other heritages were not allowed. Now, with this, Abyss right I'm using a Tiefling. Always wanted to try one, so now here we go. Thank you, everyone, for pointing out my mistake.
