Scarab Sages

There is a bit of irony to all this. I submitted a small order to the scout shop that was set to be picked up today. So I've got to go back that way. Luckily, there is another reason I have to go out that way.

Scarab Sages

I need to visit the nearby REI and begin purchasing items for the boy's summer trip up north. Next week the leader of the trip is planning an excursion up to one of the scout camps to practice with canoes. And he wants them to bring as much gear as possible.

Scarab Sages

I won't get the clothes he's going to bring, but I can work on some of the other gear, like a compact sleeping bag, compact eating gear, and such.

Scarab Sages

Well, that was an expensive visit to REI. However, I was able to pick up a bunch of the gear he needs for his summer High Adventure trip with the scouts.

Especially his new sleeping bag. This one is good to 20 degF. And it’s a backpacking bag, so it compacts really well. It’s good for up to 6’ tall, which is my height. Hopefully, that’ll be good for him for a long time.

Also picked him up some new mess gear, a new headlamp, a couple of quick-drying towels, a head net (for skeeters), a keeper strap for his glasses, and a new water-proof bag for his bed phone.

Scarab Sages

I did at least have $60 in rewards on my account. So that’s something.

Scarab Sages

I’ve still got stuff to get him, but most of that is clothing. The most expensive thing will be new hiking shoes.

Scarab Sages

In a little while I’ll take a trip over to Hobby Lobby. I need to see if they have the right size wooden letters I need to repair the troop sign. It’s old, and several of the letters are damaged. So I said I’d fix it.

Might swing by Academy while I’m out that way and pick up a couple of items I need.

Happy Sunday!

Scarab Sages

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!

Scarab Sages

And the moms as well!

Scarab Sages

An especially Happy Mother's Day to the following:

- My own beautiful wife, who gave me to "wonderful" children and hasn't smothered me in my sleep yet.

- My own mother, who gifted me to the world and allowed me to reach adulthood without smothering me in my sleep.

- My mother-in-law, who gifted me my wife and allowed her to marry me (hopefully) without encouraging my wife to smother me in my sleep.

Scarab Sages

There seems to be a pattern of me fully expecting to be smothered in my sleep one day. I have no idea why.....

Scarab Sages

Now we just need the parasi....I mean children, so we can give her presents. The girl is still sleeping. The boy has not yet returned from his camping trip.

Scarab Sages

Last night the wife and I watched the new movie Conclave. It was an excellent movie, with a wonderful cast and interesting story. Right up until the end, when it took an all-to-predictable Hollywood turn into typical "let's insult all Catholics everywhere" bigotry. Something that's always rich coming from the degenerates of the film industry.

Scarab Sages

I guess I shouldn't be surprised modern Hollywood is incapable of being more creative with its insults. They are kind of moronic.

Scarab Sages

Not sure what's on the menu today. Other than some of the usual.

Waiting to hear from the troop as to when we can expect them back from the camping trip. That shouldn't take long. Camp Tellepsen is about an hour away. If they leave camp by 9 am, even stopping at Buc-ees on the way home they'd still get back by about 10:30.

After that, we don't have anything special planned. At least, not that I've been informed. I will be cooking some chicken on the grill tonight for dinner, so at some point I'll need to get that in a marinade.

Scarab Sages

I do have to finish reading through the comics I picked up this week. There were only two regular books, plus a copy of the new Heavy Metal. They seem to have started it over at issue #1. So I picked that up for the hell of it.

Scarab Sages

I supposed I could check with my wife to see if she either (a) has something planned, or (b) has something she'd like to do.

Scarab Sages

Speak of the devil.....

Just checked the slack messenger, and it looks like the scouts will be back by about 9:45.

Scarab Sages

So now I've got an hour and 15 minutes to get a shower, stop and gas up the truck, and be at the elementary school. I can make that work.

Scarab Sages

Incidentally, we need to meet at the elementary school now because our former end-of-camp pick up location is no longer available to us. They typically return from camping trips on Sundays, when the church parking lot is busy. In the past we would meet across the road in the parking lot owned by the synagogue. However, they sold off most of their parking lot to a private owner, so we can't meet there anymore.

Hence the school now.

Scarab Sages

The boy is home, safe and sound. They had a great campout, with excellent weather and lots of activities.

I made sure to tell several of the scouts to go home and give their mothers great, big, dirty from campout hugs. I’m sure their mothers will appreciate my thoughtfulness.

Scarab Sages

I was proud of my boy for texting his mother this morning to wish her a Happy Mother’s Day. Something he did all on his own.

Scarab Sages

And I made sure to call my mother and wish her a Happy Mother’s Day as well. She’s going over to my oldest brother’s house today, but still likes to hear from all of us.

Scarab Sages

Next up is giving my wife her Mother’s Day gifts. They’re all wine related, so will most likely be appreciated. We got some tabs she can put in her wine to clean it and (apparently) make it taste better, an electric wine bottle opener, a new, wine-themed tumbler, some wine-themed socks, and a book she can write in with a title of “Great Thoughts I had while drinking wine”. Or something like that. It was a gag gift.

Although sometimes I do wish she’d pull a me and put together a list of simple gift ideas.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, since I do most of the house cleaning, laundry, dish cleaning, and weekend cooking, there’s not much else nice we can do for her. Other than let her nap. Which we typically do each weekend anyway.

Scarab Sages

Happy Monday!

Scarab Sages

I hope all the mothers out there had a wonderful Mother's Day.

Scarab Sages

I had a semi-decent day. My wife seemed to like the gifts we got her. Although she didn't have any wine yesterday, so didn't get a chance to use the electric bottle opener we got her. She got to nap, though. And that's always a gift.

Scarab Sages

Then we ate dinner, and I watched my new 4K copy of Die Hard. Such an awesome movie. And it looks great in 4K.

Scarab Sages

Traffic this morning was a bit heavier than usual. I chalk it up to the time change. With the light coming earlier, a few more people venture out sooner. That'll lighten back up once the kids are out of school and I don't have to wait around to wake them up.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of...

Next year I won't have to wait around either. My daughter is moving on to Middle School, so her bus won't leave until after 8 am. The wife can get her up. And the boy will leave at 6:20 am or so for High School, so I can just get him up when I leave around quarter to 5.

Scarab Sages

So then, just a few more weeks and I'll be free to leave the house a little early somewhere around forever. Huzzah! All to avoid as much traffic as possible.

Scarab Sages

Well, that sucks.

One of my coworkers got laid off today. He was one of four mechanical designers. The going story is (a) they didn’t have enough work for all of them, and (b) he was not being a team player with some of the new ways of getting stuff done.

I’m slightly more concerned about the first part. I hope the company isn’t moving towards another Chapter 11. They were coming out of the first one when I hired on.

Scarab Sages

Happy Tuesday?!?

Scarab Sages

I don 't know. The drive in was okay, but I'm feeling a bit run down this morning. That could be a combination of things:

Stress

My TMJ issues have been really acting up, so I took a heavy (for me) does of ibuprofen yesterday. And I was using a lot of Anbesol as well. Then we had spaghetti for dinner. None of these things did wonders for my stomach.

Some of my other usual muscle aches have been acting up as well.

And all the weather hasn't been helpful. Down in the 60s at night, then up into the high 70s or low 80s during the day. Off and on rain or clouds. Lots of wind. Messes with my sinuses.

Scarab Sages

I'm taking a half day today, however. I was able to get an appointment with my dentist to see about maybe making an adjustment to my mouth guard. Or perhaps get a new one.

Scarab Sages

The other, younger mechanical engineer is out of the office as well. Starting today, he'll be out for the next two weeks. His wife is giving birth to their second child today.

Scarab Sages

And I heard rumblings the old lady who is our resident civil engineer will be getting laid off as well. She's nice, but perhaps a bit odd. And yes. I realize coming from me that statement is...interesting.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, apparently they're not happy with the work she does compared to the money they pay her.

Scarab Sages

It's sad, because (a) she's nice, and (b) I hate to see anyone get laid off.

Scarab Sages

Well, there was a surprise lunch and learn. Semi-surprise, anyway. I knew they were trying to get this one scheduled, but I hadn't been aware it was set for today until about an hour prior.

Scarab Sages

This particular one was set at 10 am, and no food was served, so it was more like just "and learn". The presenter was from a smart pigging company. Cool stuff.

I'd love to visit there facility, but I doubt the bosses would spring for a trip to Tulsa.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, I got out just in time to do a quick drawing check and approval, then headed home for my half-day of PTO. In another half an hour, I need to be at the dentist office for my appointment.

Scarab Sages

Hopefully, the appointment won't take too long. Though I'm hoping to get a new mouth guard, so maybe I should be hoping for a bit longer.

Scarab Sages

Well, my dentist appointment did not take long. Nor did I get a new appliance. He said this one is probably good for another ten years. I sincerely hope he was joking.

Scarab Sages

In other news, another mandatory team meeting set for tomorrow at work. That's almost never a good sign. I do think they let go the old lady civil engineer. Between that, and the designer they let go yesterday, there might just be some restructuring coming. Still, I find myself a tad nervous.

Scarab Sages

Happy Wednesday!

Scarab Sages

There should probably be a few question marks in there somewhere. I'm honestly not sure if it will be a happy day or not.

Scarab Sages

We're having a bit of a heat wave here at the moment. I suppose. We're getting up into the mid-90s every day for the rest of the week. I'll have to remember to run the sprinklers at least 10-15 minutes each night.
