I'm toying with the idea of bringing my son into the office with me on Wednesday. Since I'll only be here a few hours, it wouldn't be too tortuous for him. And it would get him out of the house (and not potentially bothering his mother) for a short while.
I almost had a near perfect drive into work this morning. Until I wasn't paying enough attention and got caught at a particular light. This, in turn, got me caught at two other lights.
The delay proved somewhat fortuitous, however, as (a) my timing getting off the interstate and around to the street the office is on was timed impeccably, and (b) it did serve to get me to the office closer to magic time, when I could finally start drinking coffee.
As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I have to delay my coffee intake each morning until an hour after I've taken my medicine.
Work was pretty even-keel yesterday. We had a new PM start. He's been with the company before, so some of the older guys know him. Seems pretty cool. He'll be our senior PM, so he can ride herd on some of the less experienced ones.
And I finally heard back from New Mexico about my PE license. They wanted more paperwork. Took a while to clean the situation up, but I finally got what was needed. My processing of my application is continuing. I'd love it if I could have it before Thanksgiving.
Anyway, I don't expect too much excitement today. We'll see what the next few hours bring.
For me it's a mixed bag.
On the one hand, the boss said since the office is closed on Friday (our normal work from home day) we could go ahead and work from home today. So I have chosen to work from home for the few hours I was scheduled to be in the office today. I save some time and gas, which makes me a little happy.
On the other hand, the PM I don't really like all that much (As a PM. Personally, I think he's an okay dude and a good engineer) asked me if I could do some Caesar II stress analysis on one of his projects. It's a project I'm not working on, so I'm not familiar with it. And I'm not the greatest with Caesar II or pipe stress analysis. It's just not something I've had to do much of in my career. So that's stress I don't need today.
Adding to my discomfort for the day, I woke up around 4 am and couldn't get back to sleep. So I'll be more tired than usual today and dragging ass a bit.
On a slightly different bright side, however, I at least have four days away from the office to look forward to.
On a slightly different downside, however, we don't have anything planned for Thanksgiving. Not even turkey. I don't know if the kids will be disappointed, but I kind of am.
Plus I'm starting to get the feeling my brother doesn't want much to do with me anymore. I suppose he's still mad that I partly (and rightly) blame his good buddy for the downturn in my career.
Ah well, can't please everybody. And at least I don't have to leave the house.
Still, I often wonder what kind of effect my hermit-ish nature, general dislike and distrust of most people, and complete lack of actual friends might be having on my children.
My boy has several friends his own age, and he hangs out with them or interacts with them on a game they all play online. And he's friendly with some of the other scouts, even though he's the only one of his grade in the troop. So he at least appears somewhat outgoing.
My daughter, as far as I know, has no friends. Unless she has a few at school. Or maybe at her art or pottery classes. She doesn't hang with anyone in the neighborhood.
Then again, I should probably be focusing more on how my driving habits affect them. I've already noticed the boy tends to take after me, from a vocal standpoint, anyway.
Happy Thursday!! And Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
Despite the challenges life tends to throw, I have much to be thankful for: my wife and children, my work, my somewhat better health.
Yesterday was slightly sucktastic.
I was having trouble getting the stress analysis software running on the laptop at home, so I had to quickly shower and drive into the office. I got most of the model set up properly, but when I went to run the analysis, some problems showed up. While I was trying to fix those, our network went down.
So I never got to finish the work I went in for, making the morning partially wasted. It's not too much of a long term problem. We can get the model fixed up and rerun later. For now, it'll cover us to just put some supports in where we think we'll need them. The math can confirm it later.
I ended up leaving the office around quarter to noon. Stopped on the way home and got lunch for myself and the kidlets (the wife didn't want any of what I was getting). Then spent the rest of the day doing comic book things.
I'll do more comic book things today. Maybe put on a movie at some point.
Although, for the life of me, I can't think of any movie other than Planes, Trains, and Automobiles that's a designated Thanksgiving film. Truly an injustice.
Speaking of movies, while I was getting something else on Amazon yesterday, it showed me a steel-book, 4K version of Escape from New York. So now I've got that movie on it's way to the house.
The other thing I was buying was a small pack of Silver Age Mylar bags for some of my older comics. The silver age books tend to be a bit wider.
And for the first time in months, I had a bit of booze last night. Just some mead while I was watching TV. I also bought a beer last weekend, a scotch ale, and I intend to drink that tonight.
And...Ralph the Elf (on a shelf) is back at my house. How I hate that little turd.
What's worse, my daughter wrote him a note asking if he could help find the bookmark she lost at school a week or so ago.
Stoopid Elf.
Turns out that beer I bought was not a scotch ale. I must have misremembered. It was a barelywine instead. Not half bad.
Otherwise, we had a nice, quiet Thanksgiving Day. I did some mapping. I read some old Batman comics, then bagged and boarded them. Then I put some chicken on the grill for dinner. We ate that while watching the first Harry Potter movie.
That's right! Chicken! I'm such a rebel.
Should be a nice, quiet day today. I'm hoping to do some more bagging and boarding. If I'm feeling up to leaving the house, I might go over to this framing store I found to see about getting my original Kelley Jones art framed up real nice.
My wife, on the other hand, promised to take my daughter to see Moana 2. Glad it's not me. I'd rather gouge my own eyes out with a rust spoon.
It’s turned into a really pretty day. Sunshine, with temps currently in the mid 50s. Took the boy to get a haircut. Now I’m just waiting for the wife and daughter to get back from the movie. They should be done in the next 20 minutes or so.
I’m hoping she’ll check with me about stopping somewhere to pick up lunch. The boy needs something.
I already know what I’m having for lunch. Leftover chicken mixed with some rice. Although, to be honest, I’m kind of craving Wacky Mongolian.
'Tis a chilly morning. Temps are currently hovering in the high 30s. Brrrr....
We're supposed to have a bright, sunshiny day, though. High temps are going to be in the low to mid 60s. Might just be good weather for putting up Christmas decorations.
Although I wouldn't mind maybe heading over to Walmart to see what kind of decorations they have in stock. I've lost some stuff over the years. Not literally, of course. Just due to age.
I already checked out Lowe's. Didn't really like much of their stuff. Too many Disney inflatables.
I remember a time when people would call Disney an evil corporation and I would argue with them. My belief at the time was Disney was more amoral than evil, driven solely by profit.
Recent years have dissuaded me from continuing with that belief. They have, in my humble (and correct) opinion, become the evil corporation many once viewed them as being.
Speaking of "evil" corporations...It looks like my most recent orders from Amazon are on the way. Furthermore, the orders are currently tracking to arrive on time. That surprised me a bit.
I had seen news reports about Amazon workers going on strike over the company's continued efforts to (rightly) prevent unionization. I was worried the actions of those little commie turds might slow down the arrival of my stuff.
Anyway...I look forward to getting my orders. Picked up some silver age mylar bags and boards. I've been adding much older comics to my collection recently (like Batman #200), and the modern bags won't hold them.
While I was purchasing those items, Amazon cleverly weaponized its algorithm by showing me the steel book 4K copy of Escape from New York. Clearly, destined intended me to buy it.
Not much on the menu today (maybe some meat). The usual grocery shopping and comic book store. My daughter doesn't have her art class today, so I may see if she and my wife want to go with us to the comic book store. Then we could all get Five Guys burgers and fries for lunch.
Except the boy, of course. Sadly, he doesn't eat burgers. He'd probably order a grilled cheese sammich.
I cleaned up my front room/office area a bit yesterday. I've still got more to do, and I should probably get that done today as well. I need to make room for the Christmas tree, aka The Abomination.
I call it that because it's a fake tree, not because I think of Christmas as something bad. I used to insist on real trees. These days (a) they're too damned expensive, and (b) it's difficult for me to lift and carry them.
If we ever do decide to get real trees again, however, I am luckily right up the road from a Christmas Tree farm. Coincidentally, it's also the Pumpkin Patch we go to every year.
Back home after a morning of running around. I did end up brining the whole family with me to the comic book store, and we did indeed have Five Guys.
Now, after some brief reorganizing and cleaning up of the front room, I’m going to relax and read a bit.
And have my afternoon cup of coffee.
