I had to stay a bit extra at work today to finish up a restraint summary report for one of our piping models. I’d have been done sooner, but the models produced by our remaining designers tend to have fits in ways the models by the old guys (the ones management got rid of) did not.

A few minutes ago, my wife was talking about a news story where a monkey got spooked in a Spirit Halloween store. She wondered what the monkey was doing in the store in the first place, and commented on how weird the whole thing was.

So I read her a selection of the headlines of articles I’ve linked in the Weird News Thread.

Happy Thursday?!?

Scarab Sages

Normally, that'd be a no-brainer. It's Thursday. Which means tomorrow is Friday. Even a typical Friday is work-from-home day, which makes it happy. Tomorrow has the added bonus of being Halloween. My favorite holiday.

Scarab Sages

It is not, however, a no-brainer. We're going to be extremely busy in the office today. We've got at least one package, maybe more, to get out today. This is partly due to past screw ups by management, so they decided to try and fix the issue by saying no issuance on Fridays.

Scarab Sages

AND....

That weird dude I wrote about yesterday morning? The one who tried to get me to let him in the building. I sent an email to the safety boss, and he tried teams calling me yesterday. That didn't work for technical reasons, but he said he'd connect with me today.

How much do you want to bet he's going to b#$!# at me for coming into the office so early? And he'll "suggest" I don't do it. Which, of course, means if I kept to my routine I'd probably get in trouble. All for some "safety" reasons. Which would be corporate speak for "we're covering our ass and forcing you to conform or give us a reason to get rid of you".

If that happens, it'll definitely mean I'd think twice before ever reporting anything safety related ever again.

Scarab Sages

Incidentally, the reason I get here so early is mostly one of simple convenience and routine. For years I'd been getting up early, getting ready, then waiting around to get the kids up. These days, I only have to wake the boy up, and he conveniently needs to get up at 5:30, which is around when I'm typically done getting ready for the day. So, then I just leave, instead of sitting around on my ass twiddling my thumbs.

Scarab Sages

As a bonus, leaving earlier means less traffic. Less traffic means less stress. Less stress means happier and healthier zombie.

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

And getting here early means I get to spend more time sharing the joy of my existence with the people on these message boards.

Scarab Sages

Anyway....

So busy day ahead. And a busy day yesterday.

Wednesday, we had pipe stress analysis and a review of some hot tap fittings. Hot taps are when they cut into a line that's operating, in order to install new pipe. It can be challenging. And dangerous.

Today, I've got more pipe stress analysis and drawing package review. Hopefully, the pipe stress won't take me nearly as long as the one yesterday.

Scarab Sages

Somewhere in all that, I'll attend at least two meetings.

Scarab Sages

And I've got to remember to put in my timecard for yesterday. The system was down most of Wednesday, so I couldn't do it then. Had an email late last night that it was accessible.

Scarab Sages

Last night I watched the awesomely creepy Ghost Story. It's from 1981, with Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Melvin Douglas, John Houseman, and a very often naked Alice Krige.

I've heard it deviates heavily from the source material, which would bother me more if I'd ever read the book. Taking it on its own, however, the movie is very entertaining.

Scarab Sages

According to Amazon, it looks like the three movies I had on preorder will actually be delivered today. The release date for all three was 28 October, and initially they were scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

Huzzah for early delivery!!!!

Scarab Sages

If that holds true, I’ll watch one of the horror movies tonight. The second horror movie will be saved for tomorrow. Then on Saturday I’ll watch Shin Godzilla.

Scarab Sages

Happy Friday!

Scarab Sages

Happy Halloween!!!

Scarab Sages

Despite the chill in the air, it's already a glorious day. Mostly due to the fact I did not have to drive to the office today.

Scarab Sages

They were letting people dress up at the office today, but said no masks. What they hell is the point then?!?

Scarab Sages

And I did get my movies a day early from Amazon. They were waiting for me when I got home. Huzzah!

So last night I watched The Resurrected. Tonight I'll watch In the Mouth of Madness. Tomorrow it'll most likely be Shin Godzilla.

Scarab Sages

I won't wear a costume today. Frankly, I'm creepy enough without one. However, I will soon be going in search of my old banana costume. The wife wants to wear it to kickboxing.

I think it's in our bedroom closet. Could be wrong though. We'll see.

Scarab Sages

Still, it's been a busy Halloween season this year. Work finally picked up. We had the Court of Honor for Scouts. Throw several other minor issues, some poorly-timed weather shenanigans, and the usual stuff into the mix, and I didn't even have time to get a pumpkin and carve it.

Scarab Sages

Usually, for the pumpkin, we make a trip to the local pumpkin patch. This will be the first time in something like 10 or 11 years we didn't go. I'm a little saddened by this.

Scarab Sages

But only a little.

Scarab Sages

I've also yet to do a Horror themed map to post on my FB page. I'll take care of that today.

Scarab Sages

Although, to be honest, I've been occasionally contemplating ending the FB map page and starting one on that Discord thing. I know the real Fawtly folk had a page there once. Not sure if any of them still do. Probably just the posers now.

Scarab Sages

And, to be more honest, I'm not sure there are enough people left who are even mildly interested in my maps. Or like me all that much.

Of course, I'm all kinds of bent out of shape about people not liking me.

Scarab Sages

pssst....that's called sarcasm, kids.

Scarab Sages

Anyway. I do at least have a few work related items on my plate. I've done pipe stress analysis on two different sites this week. And though I've already given the civil engineer what he needs - the restraint summary reports - I've got to do the full report for each.

We might not ever do anything with them. Still, we tend to develop a full report just in case the client asks for one at some point.

Scarab Sages

And if things slow down anytime soon (not likely), I might go through the report layout and see if there's anything I want to revise. I have thoughts on maybe how to make them better.

Scarab Sages

Ye gods! It has awakened!

Scarab Sages

HA!

Turns out, I knew exactly where that old banana costume was located. Which happened to be NOT in our bedroom closet. It was the closet in the guest room. All I had to do was give it a few brief moments of thought, and I recalled where I had put it.

Scarab Sages

While I was out and about, I decided to stop in at HEB. We needed some kleenex, and I figured I could also see if they had any rotisserie chicken quarters for lunch. I also decided to get a pumpkin, which I'll carve later today.

Scarab Sages

Sadly, HEB did not have to aforementioned rotisserie chicken. So, I grabbed some Popeye's instead. Some part of me might regret that. Still, I figure if I'm going to feel like crap anyway, I might as well have food that tastes good and makes me temporarily happy.

Scarab Sages

Now, I've brought my computer downstairs while the wife is at kickboxing. This way I don't feel the need to lock the dog in her kennel.

Scarab Sages

Work-wise, I almost had an emergency job. Turns out, my boss was overreacting a bit, without full knowledge of the particulars.

I did have a call from the mechanical designer though. He had to redesign the hot tap on the Pig Receiver site we're designing. Which means I'll have to redo the pipe stress analysis once he gets me a new pcf file. I actually don't expect the results to change all that much, so it shouldn't affect us moving forward. We still need to do the analysis though.

Scarab Sages

Ye gods! The website will be down for changes next week?!? Whatever shall I do?!?

Scarab Sages

Meh! It’ll be a bit weird, but I’m sure I’ll live.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, even though I only finished work about an hour ago, I didn’t let it stop me from giving out candy. We had a good many kids earlier, but it’s kind of dying out now.

I blame the many losers in my area who don’t give out candy. There’s only a few houses in my general vicinity that really go all out.

The rest?!? Losers!

Scarab Sages

Anyway, I’ve got one unopened bag of candy, and my bucket is about 2/3rds full. That’s out of 7 bags. Not too shabby.

Of course, I give away a lot to each kid.

Scarab Sages

I was listening to my phone YouTube music mix earlier. A little Blackpink and other K-pop groups (I blame Korean language shows and very creepy algorithms). Some young girls saw the screen, and asked me if I was in fact listening to Blackpink.

Thereafter followed a brief conversation in which we discussed All of Us Are Dead (TV show) and I gave them recommendations on some other shows and movies.

It was odd.

Scarab Sages

Now I’m just waiting until it hits about 9 pm. Then I’ll go inside, put on some comfier clothes, and settle down to watch In the Mouth of Madness.

Scarab Sages

Mmmmmm…..ten minutes to go. I think I’ll call it. Though I’ll keep the candy bucket on standby.
